Nothing quite matches real wood on a mountain home. Cedar and redwood clapboard, hand-split shakes, board-and-batten — the natural grain, the way it weathers, the way it belongs against the pines — is the reason wood siding never really goes out of style up on the Ebbetts Pass corridor. Bay Area Siding Company installs natural wood siding for Arnold owners who want the genuine article. We also believe in telling you the whole truth about it, because at 4,000 feet on a forested lot, wood asks more of you than any other cladding, and on some parcels the fire code will make the decision for you.

When it's the right fit, wood delivers what no manufactured product fully replicates:
For an owner who loves the material, visits often enough to keep it up, and whose parcel allows it, wood siding is a genuinely satisfying choice.
Wood carries two real costs, and both are amplified by this specific location.
Maintenance. This is the big one. Wood has to be sealed, stained, or painted and then re-done on a cycle — and Arnold's climate is hard on finishes from both directions. Snow banks against the lower courses and sits there; meltwater refreezes into checks and end-grain; the intense high-altitude sun bakes and fades finishes on the south and west walls faster than at sea level. Left unmaintained, wood cups, splits, greys, and eventually rots, particularly at grade and on the shaded north walls that never fully dry. None of that is a reason to avoid wood — it's a reason to go in committed to the upkeep, which is a real ask on a second home you don't visit every month.
Fire. This is the one that can take the choice out of your hands. Much of Arnold is forested parcel inside a State Responsibility Area where Cal Fire designates fire-hazard severity zones, and California Building Code Chapter 7A governs exterior wall coverings in designated zones, favoring noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies. Natural wood is combustible. On a designated high-hazard parcel, standard wood siding often won't be appropriate, and meeting the code may require a specific fire-retardant-treated or tested assembly — or point you to a noncombustible material altogether. Whether this applies to your lot depends on the parcel designation and the scope of work, so we confirm it with the Calaveras County Building Division before committing to wood. If your parcel steers away from combustible cladding, fiber cement gives you a noncombustible wall, and if it's specifically the wood look you're after, LP SmartSide engineered wood delivers much of the character with better moisture behavior (though it too is a wood-based product with its own fire considerations).
Where the parcel allows it and you're up for the maintenance, the install is what protects your investment. We remove the old cladding to the sheathing and substrate so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected and corrected, then install the wood with proper back-priming, gapping, and flashing detailing — the details that decide whether wood lasts decades or fails in a few winters — followed by a quality finish system. Choosing a durable species (cedar or redwood), a good finish, and staying on the maintenance schedule is what gets you the long life wood is capable of up here.
Arnold is unincorporated, so the permit runs through the Calaveras County Building Division — (209) 754-6390 or the county's online portal — not a city. We handle the permit and, on a forested parcel, confirm the fire-zone requirements before ordering material. Exterior work is a dry-season job here, so we plan around the snow.
No posted prices. The drivers: species and profile (clapboard vs. shake vs. board-and-batten), home size and layout, concealed rot found at tear-off, any fire-zone assembly requirements, the finish system, and access on a wooded or steep lot. Wood also carries a lifetime maintenance cost that's worth factoring in alongside the install. A walkthrough is how we price it.
Can I put wood siding on my Arnold home if it's in a fire zone? It depends on your parcel's designation. On a designated high-hazard parcel, standard combustible wood siding often isn't appropriate, and the code may require a treated or tested assembly — or a noncombustible material. We confirm your designation with Calaveras County before recommending wood.
How much maintenance does wood siding really need up here? More than any other cladding. Plan on regular sealing/staining or repainting, driven hard by snow at grade and intense high-altitude UV. Skipping the cycle leads to cupping, splitting, greying, and rot. If you can't commit to the upkeep, engineered wood or fiber cement will serve you better.
Is cedar or redwood better for a mountain home? Both are naturally more rot- and insect-resistant than most species, which is why they're the classics here. The choice usually comes down to look, budget, and availability — we'll go over both for your project.
What if I want the wood look but not the upkeep or fire risk? Look at LP SmartSide engineered wood for the texture with less maintenance, or fiber cement in a woodgrain finish for a noncombustible wall. Both are common substitutes on forested lots.
Call (415) 619-5167 or request an estimate. We'll check your parcel's fire context, look at the walls, and tell you honestly whether wood fits your lot and your appetite for upkeep. Doing windows too? See Arnold window replacement. We serve the Sierra region; finished work is in the project gallery.
