Some Tahoe houses only look right in real wood. Examples include the A-frame off a pine-lined street, the older cabin with weathered board-and-batten, and the lodge-style home with cedar shingles in the gables. Other materials can imitate that look, but they don't age or repair the way wood does. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install natural wood siding. We'll also tell you plainly what wood asks of you at 6,200-plus feet: more upkeep than any other cladding, careful detailing against snow and meltwater, and a hard look at fire exposure in a city the Caldor Fire evacuated in 2021.

Who wood siding is right for up here

Wood is a deliberate choice rather than a default. It makes the most sense when:

  • The house's character depends on it. Cabins, A-frames, and older mountain homes were often built with wood cladding. Keeping the material keeps the architecture honest.
  • You want a finish that can be renewed rather than replaced. Wood can be sanded, re-stained, repainted, and patched one board at a time. When a lower course gets damaged by snow or a plow berm, we can swap those boards without re-siding the wall.
  • You're prepared for maintenance. Wood rewards owners who keep up with finish care. It punishes owners who don't.
  • Your parcel and scope allow it. Fire-code applicability is covered in its own section below, because it's a genuine gating question in South Lake Tahoe.

If upkeep or fire exposure is a dealbreaker, the wood look is available in lower-maintenance materials. LP SmartSide is engineered wood with a real-grain texture, and fiber cement is noncombustible and comes in wood-textured profiles. Our wood siding hub compares them in more depth.

Species and profiles

Species. Western red cedar and redwood are the traditional premium choices. Their heartwood grades carry natural decay resistance and take stain well. Grade matters as much as species: clear, heartwood-heavy boards behave very differently from knotty or sapwood-heavy stock, and the price reflects that.

Profiles common on Tahoe homes:

  • Bevel/clapboard lap siding. This is the classic horizontal look, and it suits a wide range of house styles.
  • Board-and-batten. This vertical profile is common on cabins and rustic builds, and it sheds water down the face of the wall.
  • Shingles and shakes. Cedar shingles are often used in gables or as an accent. They create a textured, lodge-like surface.
  • Tongue-and-groove and channel profiles. These give a clean, tight-jointed face, often seen on mid-century mountain homes.

We can match an existing profile for partial replacement, or re-side the whole house in a new profile if the old cladding is past saving.

What a Tahoe winter asks of a wood wall

Wood's main enemy is moisture that stays put, and mountain winters supply plenty of it. None of the problems below is unique to wood, but wood shows them sooner if the details are wrong:

  • Snow contact at the base. Boards that sit in a snowpack for weeks stay wet, and chronically wet wood rots. We set the bottom course with clearance above where snow typically banks against your walls. We also pay close attention to spots under rooflines that dump meltwater.
  • Freeze-thaw at the finish. Water that gets behind a failing paint or stain film and freezes will lift the finish and open checks in the wood. Keeping the finish intact is what protects the board.
  • High-altitude UV. Sun at elevation breaks down finishes and grays bare wood faster than lowland sun does. South- and west-facing walls usually need refinishing before the shaded sides.

Good installation practice addresses these at the source. We back-prime or seal boards on all faces, including cut ends, before they go up. We use stainless or appropriately coated fasteners, since cedar and redwood can stain and corrode plain steel. And we typically build a ventilated rainscreen gap behind the siding so the back of each board can dry out between wettings.

Tear-off first: what's behind the old siding

On a full re-side, we remove the old cladding to the sheathing and substrate. That lets us inspect and renew the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing, which are the layers that actually keep water out of the wall. We don't take walls down to the framing unless the sheathing itself turns out to be damaged and has to be replaced. On Tahoe homes, we look hardest at:

  • lower walls and inside corners where snow sits
  • window and door heads and sills
  • deck ledgers
  • roof-to-wall transitions

In those areas we renew the flashing before any new wood goes on. For more on the full re-side decision, see our South Lake Tahoe siding replacement page.

Fire exposure: the honest part of the wood conversation

South Lake Tahoe sits in wildland-urban-interface terrain, and the Caldor Fire forced a citywide evacuation in 2021. Standard wood siding is combustible, and that matters here.

Where California Building Code Chapter 7A applies to a parcel and a project, exterior wall coverings generally must meet one of these standards:

  • noncombustible material
  • ignition-resistant material, which can include certain fire-retardant-treated wood products tested for exterior use
  • specific heavy-timber or log construction
  • an assembly tested to state fire standards

The key question is whether Chapter 7A applies to your address and your scope of work. The city is a Local Responsibility Area that CAL FIRE maps separately, and a repair may be treated differently from a full re-side. We confirm applicability with the City rather than assume it.

The practical result is usually one of three paths:

  • untreated cedar or redwood where the code allows it
  • a fire-retardant-treated wood product that qualifies
  • a hybrid approach, such as fiber cement on the lower walls or most-exposed elevations, with wood kept for accents

We'll lay out these options once we know your parcel's status.

Permits, TRPA, and color

A wood re-side typically needs approval from two authorities:

  • City of South Lake Tahoe Building Division (Development Services Department). Exterior re-siding goes through the City's building permit process.
  • Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). TRPA administers regional scenic and design standards, water-quality Best Management Practices, and land coverage. Its scenic guidance generally favors muted, earth-tone, low-reflectivity exteriors.

Natural and earth-toned wood stains usually sit comfortably within TRPA's color guidance, which is one reason wood remains popular in the basin. Whether your specific project triggers TRPA review depends on the property and scope, and TRPA offers planner appointments to confirm your category. We fold that check into scoping.

What drives the cost

We price wood siding after a site visit, not online. The main variables are:

  • Material: species and grade (clear vs. knotty, heartwood content)
  • Profile: shingles are more labor-intensive than lap siding
  • Finish: whether boards are factory-primed or finished, or finished on site
  • Wall repairs: sheathing, WRB, or flashing repairs found after tear-off
  • Fire-code requirements: whether a fire-retardant-treated product is needed
  • Access: tall A-frame gables, staging on sloped lots, and working around snow season
  • Replacement scope: partial board replacement vs. a full re-side

Browse finished work on our projects page. If your windows are aging along with the siding, it's often efficient to coordinate the flashing work with South Lake Tahoe window replacement. You can see the wider area we cover on our service areas page.

Wood siding FAQs

Can I still use wood siding in South Lake Tahoe after the Caldor Fire? Often yes, but it depends on your parcel and project. If Chapter 7A applies, exterior wall coverings generally must be noncombustible, ignition-resistant (which can include qualifying fire-retardant-treated wood), or part of a tested assembly. We confirm your address's status with the City of South Lake Tahoe before recommending a product.

Will TRPA care what color I stain my wood siding? TRPA's scenic guidance generally favors muted, earth-tone, low-reflectivity finishes so buildings blend into the landscape. Natural wood tones usually fit that guidance well. Whether your project requires TRPA review depends on the property and scope.

How often will wood siding need refinishing at this altitude? There's no fixed schedule. It depends on the product, the finish type, and each wall's sun and snow exposure. Expect the sunniest elevations to need attention first, and inspect the lower courses every spring after the snow melts.

Can you replace just the damaged boards? Frequently, yes. Repairability is one of wood's real advantages. If the damage points to failed flashing or a wet WRB behind the boards, a larger opening or a full re-side may be the better fix. We'll show you what we find.
