Nothing quite matches real wood on a house. The grain, the way it takes stain or paint, the way a cedar shingle wall weathers — there is a warmth and authenticity that engineered lookalikes chase but never fully catch. If you want that on your American Canyon home, Bay Area Siding Company installs natural wood siding, and we will be honest with you about what it asks in return. We are a Marin-based (Larkspur) siding and window contractor.

Natural wood siding comes in a few classic forms, and the choice sets the character of the house:
Cedar and redwood are the go-to species because they are naturally more rot- and insect-resistant than most woods, they are renewable, and — a real advantage over every synthetic — a damaged board or shingle can be individually replaced and the wall refinished, so the material is genuinely repairable rather than disposable.
Wood is the most demanding cladding we install, and you should choose it with eyes open:
If the look draws you but the upkeep worries you, LP SmartSide engineered wood delivers much of the warmth with less vulnerability, and fiber cement offers a painted-board look with the least maintenance and the best fire posture. Compare the whole field from the siding replacement overview.
American Canyon is not a place to choose wood siding casually. Most of the city sits on flat bayside ground and is not high-hazard, but the American Canyon Fire Protection District adopted an updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone map in 2025, with moderate, high, and very high designations, and the higher ones fall toward the western hill edges. On a parcel that carries a fire-hazard designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can require noncombustible or ignition-resistant exterior wall materials — and natural wood generally does not meet that standard. In practice, that means wood siding is a reasonable choice on the flat, non-hazard parts of town, but on a hill-edge parcel we will steer you to fiber cement instead. Whether the designation applies is parcel-specific, so the first thing we do is confirm it before recommending wood. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a material your parcel can't legally use.
On the flatland neighborhoods — the subdivisions off Napa Junction, Melvin Road, and the Highway 29 corridor — wood is a legitimate way to give a builder-grade tract home genuine character, especially as an accent (a board-and-batten gable, a shingled entry) rather than the whole envelope. It pairs well with the region's farmhouse and Craftsman leanings. Keep two local realities in mind: the steady wind and wind-driven winter rain off the north end of San Pablo Bay make keeping the finish intact more important here than in a sheltered spot, and if your subdivision has an HOA, wood profiles and colors may need approval, so pull your architectural guidelines early.
A wood re-side starts with tear-off to the sheathing and substrate, where we inspect and correct the water-resistive barrier and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations before any new wood goes up — with a material this sensitive to moisture, a sound barrier and correct flashing are what protect your investment. We install and detail the wood to shed water, and we will lay out a realistic finish-and-maintenance schedule so you know what the wall needs and when. Kept up, a wood exterior can last a very long time and be refinished repeatedly; neglected, it fails faster than any other material we offer.
Wood sits at the premium end, and the number depends on species (cedar vs. redwood), profile (lap, shingle, or board-and-batten), the finish, the home's size and stories, how much substrate or flashing repair appears at tear-off, and trim detailing. On a fire-hazard parcel the honest answer is that wood may not be an option at all. We price after we measure and confirm your parcel's fire designation.
Can I put wood siding on my American Canyon home? On the flat, non-hazard parts of the city, yes. On a parcel near the western hills that carries a fire-hazard designation, Chapter 7A can require noncombustible materials, and wood generally won't qualify — we confirm your designation first and steer you to fiber cement where it applies.
How much maintenance does wood siding really need? More than any other material. It must be painted or stained and re-sealed on a regular cycle to prevent rot, cupping, and insect damage. American Canyon's wind-driven rain makes keeping that finish intact especially important.
Is wood or fiber cement better here? For maintenance and fire resistance, fiber cement; for authentic grain and repairability, wood. On hill-edge fire-zone parcels the decision is usually made for you in favor of fiber cement.
Will my HOA approve wood siding? It depends on the association. Many have profile and color rules. Pull your architectural guidelines early, and we will spec toward what is approved.
