Few materials suit Saratoga's setting as naturally as real wood. Oak-shaded lots, custom homes tucked up canyon roads, and ranch and mid-century houses on generous parcels all tend to look right in cedar or redwood. Wood siding is also the most demanding choice we install. It needs a regular finish schedule, it is vulnerable to moisture and pests if neglected, and it is combustible. That last point matters on the parcels of Saratoga that fall within a mapped fire-hazard zone.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Marin-based siding and window contractor working across the South Bay. We install natural wood siding, and we'll tell you plainly whether it's the right fit for your particular house and lot.

Is wood right for your Saratoga parcel?

Saratoga isn't one kind of lot, and the wood-siding answer changes with where you are.

On the valley-floor side of town and around the Village, wood is primarily a question of taste and upkeep. If you love the grain, the shadow lines, and the way a stained cedar wall ages, and you're prepared to maintain it, wood is a legitimate long-term cladding. Many homeowners here choose it precisely because it matches the character of an older custom or ranch-style home in a way a manufactured product doesn't quite replicate.

Up in the foothills, the conversation gets more careful. Saratoga's western neighborhoods climb into the Santa Cruz Mountains. Cal Fire's updated Local Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, released in February 2025, place a large share of that hillside and canyon terrain in a High or Very High zone. That includes areas along the roads toward Bohlman, Pierce, and Mount Eden. On a designated parcel, wood isn't automatically off the table, but it may no longer be the simplest route. We cover that in detail below.

The wood siding options we install

"Wood siding" covers several quite different looks. The profile often matters as much as the species.

  • Cedar or redwood bevel / clapboard. These are horizontal lap boards with a crisp shadow line. This is the classic choice for traditional and ranch homes, and it takes either paint or a semi-transparent stain.
  • Shingles and shakes. Sawn shingles give a tailored, uniform texture. Split shakes are rougher and more rustic. Both work well on gables, cottage-style homes, and accent walls.
  • Board-and-batten. Wide vertical boards with narrow battens over the seams. This profile suits mid-century and modern-rustic designs and pairs well with large glazing.
  • Tongue-and-groove and channel profiles. These produce clean, tight vertical or horizontal lines, often used on contemporary custom homes.

Cedar and redwood are the species most homeowners ask about. Both are valued for their natural resistance to decay, their dimensional stability relative to many softwoods, and the way they take finish. Grade matters a great deal. Clear, vertical-grain stock behaves differently from knotty grades, both in appearance and in how well it holds a finish. We walk through grade and finish options against your budget before ordering, rather than defaulting to one spec.

The honest trade-offs

Wood's strengths are real: a natural look nothing else fully matches, a renewable material, and the ability to repair it board by board. The trade-offs are just as real, and it's better to hear them before you order:

  • Maintenance is ongoing. Painted or stained wood needs periodic refinishing. Walls that take full afternoon sun usually need attention sooner than shaded ones. Skipping a cycle is how small problems become board replacements.
  • Moisture is the main enemy. Wood that stays wet rots. Details such as proper clearance from soil and hardscape, sealed end cuts, correct flashing, and a sound weather barrier behind the boards do most of the work of keeping it dry. On heavily wooded lots, walls that sit in shade and leaf litter deserve extra attention to drainage and clearance.
  • Pests. Untreated or neglected wood can attract insects, so routine inspection belongs in the maintenance plan.
  • Combustibility. Wood burns. On a fire-zone parcel, this is a code question as well as a preference.

If those trade-offs give you pause, you're not stuck choosing between wood and a flat, plasticky wall. See the comparison section below.

Wood siding on a Saratoga fire-zone parcel

Where a parcel is designated as a Fire Hazard Severity Zone, California Building Code Chapter 7A governs specific exterior-wall assemblies and openings. It generally requires noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, or assemblies that have passed a recognized fire test.

Chapter 7A does not simply ban wood. Some fire-retardant-treated wood products rated for exterior use, and certain tested wall assemblies, may be able to satisfy the requirements. Whether a given product qualifies, and whether Chapter 7A even reaches your project, depends on three things:

  • your parcel's mapped zone,
  • the scope of the work, and
  • the specific product and assembly.

We confirm those points with the City of Saratoga Community Development Department / Building Division before specifying anything. We don't assume a blanket answer in either direction.

In practice, many foothill homeowners who love the look of wood end up choosing a noncombustible fiber cement product with a wood-grain or shingle profile. Others use real wood only on limited areas where the code and the assembly allow it. If your home is in the hills, raise it at the first walkthrough, because it shapes the shortlist.

Repair, partial replacement, or a full re-side

Because wood is repairable, not every tired wall needs a full re-side. Replacing damaged boards, re-caulking, and refinishing can extend a wood exterior's life considerably. The challenge on an older Saratoga home is matching aged, weathered boards so a patch doesn't stand out.

When the damage is spread across multiple elevations, a full replacement usually makes more sense. Signs include recurring rot at wall bases, finish that fails soon after each repaint, or soft trim around windows.

On a full re-side, we remove the existing cladding down to the sheathing or substrate. That exposes the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations so they can be inspected and corrected. Framing is only exposed if the sheathing itself has deteriorated, which would be a separate scope we'd flag and price. For the broader tear-off decision, see our Saratoga siding replacement page.

Wood versus the wood-look alternatives

Here's how natural wood compares with the products homeowners most often weigh against it:

  • LP SmartSide engineered wood gives a warm, real-wood texture. It is lighter and more impact-resistant than fiber cement, still needs periodic paint, and carries less refinishing burden than solid wood.
  • Fiber cement is noncombustible, rot- and pest-resistant, and available in lap, shingle, and panel profiles that echo wood. On a foothill parcel it is often the practical answer. Our Saratoga James Hardie page covers that brand specifically.
  • Natural wood, explored further on our wood siding hub, remains the choice when authentic grain and repairability matter most and the parcel allows it.

What drives the cost

We don't publish prices, because wood projects vary widely. The main cost drivers are:

  • Material: species and grade. Clear, vertical-grain cedar or redwood costs more than knotty stock.
  • Profile: shingles and board-and-batten involve more labor than simple lap siding.
  • Finish: factory pre-finishing versus field finishing.
  • Size and complexity: wall area and architectural detail such as gables and trim.
  • Substrate condition: what the tear-off reveals behind the old cladding.
  • Access: steep hillside and multi-story walls take more staging.
  • Fire-zone requirements: these can change the product or the assembly.

How a wood siding project runs in Saratoga

  1. Walkthrough. We discuss the look you want and your parcel's fire-zone status.
  2. Scope and permit. We write a scope, then handle permitting and inspections through the City of Saratoga Building Division.
  3. Tear-off and inspection. We remove the old cladding and correct the WRB and flashing.
  4. Installation. We install the new wood to the specification for that product.
  5. Finish and walkthrough. We apply or coordinate the finish, then do a final walkthrough with you.

If you're also replacing windows, sequencing both trades together gets the flashing right. See Saratoga window replacement. Browse finished exteriors on our projects page, or see the other communities we serve across the South Bay.

FAQs

Can I use wood siding on a Saratoga home in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone? Possibly, but it depends on the specific product, the wall assembly, and your project's scope. Chapter 7A applies to particular exterior assemblies on designated parcels. Some fire-retardant-treated or tested products may qualify, while untreated wood generally won't be the straightforward route. We confirm with the City of Saratoga before specifying.

Cedar or redwood: which should I choose? Both are respected for decay resistance and the way they take finish. The choice usually comes down to appearance, grade, availability, and budget at the time you order. We'll show you options side by side.

How often will wood siding need refinishing? It varies with the finish type, the product, and each wall's exposure. Sun-facing elevations typically need attention before shaded ones. We'll give you a realistic maintenance picture for your house rather than a one-size answer.

Can you replace just the damaged sections of my wood siding? Often, yes. Wood is repairable. If the damage is widespread or the WRB behind it has failed, though, a full re-side is usually the better long-term value.
