Around Clear Lake, a re-side is rarely just a cosmetic decision. This is some of the most wildfire-exposed country in California, and the walls of your home are part of how it stands up to the next bad season. Bay Area Siding Company is a Marin-based (Larkspur) siding and window contractor that takes on full replacements across the Clear Lake area — the City of Clearlake and the unincorporated Lake County communities around the lake — tearing off tired cladding, correcting what's behind it, and re-siding with materials chosen for heat, sun, and fire exposure.

Lake County has lived through fire in a way few California counties have. The 2015 Valley Fire tore through Cobb, Middletown, and Hidden Valley Lake, burning roughly 76,000 acres and destroying more than 1,900 structures. Three years later the 2018 Mendocino Complex — its Ranch Fire alone the largest single wildfire in modern California history at that point — burned across Lake and neighboring counties. That history is not background noise; it's the reason so much of the county now sits in high and very-high fire-hazard territory, and it's why the cladding you choose on a re-side genuinely matters.
Combustible, sun-baked wood siding that's already checking and splitting is a liability on a lakeside or hillside lot. Replacing it is a chance to move the whole wall toward something that resists ignition and shrugs off the region's brutal summer UV. We'll walk the exterior with you and talk honestly about where a fire-resistant material earns its cost and where it doesn't.
Older, modest homes ring the lake, and a lot of them wear cladding that's near the end of its life. A re-side usually beats another patch job once you're seeing several of these:
One failing spot can be repaired. Failure showing up in several places at once is the wall telling you the system is spent.
Pulling the old cladding is the only way to see the parts of the wall that decide whether the next one lasts. Tear-off removes the siding and exposes the sheathing or substrate, the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and the flashing — not the framing itself, unless we find damage that calls for opening up further. With the wall open we can spot concealed rot, confirm there's an intact WRB (many older lake-area homes were built before one was standard), and re-detail flashing at windows, doors, and transitions so water is actually managed. Siding laid back over failing material just seals those problems in.
We install a range of systems and will lay out the trade-offs on your walls, in person. Given the fire picture here, noncombustible and ignition-resistant options tend to lead the conversation:
We also work in wood, T1-11, and aluminum. On a designated fire-hazard parcel, California Building Code Chapter 7A can require noncombustible or ignition-resistant wall assemblies on specific elements — but whether it applies to your project depends on your parcel's designation and the scope of work, so we confirm that with the City or County rather than assuming.
The Clear Lake area straddles two authorities. If your home is inside the City of Clearlake, a re-side is permitted through the City of Clearlake Building Department. If you're on an unincorporated parcel — Kelseyville, Lower Lake, Clearlake Oaks, Nice, Lucerne, Cobb, or elsewhere around the lake — it runs through the Lake County Community Development Department (Building Safety). We confirm which applies to your address and handle the paperwork either way.
No two of these jobs cost the same. The real drivers are the size and height of the home, how much concealed rot or substrate repair turns up once the old siding is off, the material and finish you pick, whether a fire-hazard designation shapes the assembly, and access — steep lakeside lots and tight rural driveways add staging time. We price it after we've measured and looked behind the cladding, not before.
We're based in Larkspur and work the Clear Lake area regularly. Browse finished work in our project gallery, see the wider region on our Lake County service page, and if windows are on the list too, start with Clear Lake window replacement.
Do I need a permit to replace siding around Clear Lake? Yes. Re-siding is permitted work. Inside city limits it goes through the City of Clearlake Building Department; on unincorporated parcels it's the Lake County Community Development Department. We confirm which authority covers your address and pull the permit.
We're in a fire-hazard zone — does that limit my siding choices? It can. On designated high and very-high fire-hazard parcels, Chapter 7A can require noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies for certain wall elements. Whether and how it applies depends on your parcel and scope, so we verify with the City or County before speccing anything.
Can I just side over the old material to save money? We don't recommend it on older lake-area homes. Covering over hides the sheathing, WRB, and flashing — exactly the parts that determine whether the new wall keeps water out. Tear-off costs more up front and gives you a wall that's sound from the substrate out.
Will new siding hold up to the summer sun out here? That depends heavily on material. Clear Lake summers are hot and high-UV, and fiber cement and quality engineered products handle that far better than tired wood or thin vinyl. We factor exposure into the recommendation, face by face.
Call (415) 619-5167 or request an estimate. We'll look at the walls, talk fire-resilient materials, and lay out the process end to end.
