Design flexibility and large openings

Marvin's appeal for many Bay Area homeowners is range. The same brand can supply a modest bedroom replacement and a wall of glass facing the view. Fiberglass is a big part of why larger units are practical. It is dimensionally stable through temperature swings, so it holds its shape and seals well. That matters on west-facing walls in Walnut Creek or Livermore that bake in the afternoon, and on coastal elevations where the marine layer keeps things damp. A fiberglass exterior also doesn't rot the way exposed wood can when fog and salt air sit on a sill.

Bigger glass raises installation questions that a spec sheet won't answer. Widening an opening means a new header sized for the span. On many Bay Area homes that same wall also serves as seismic bracing, so reducing solid wall area can require an engineer's review and a permit. Large panes near floors, doors, tubs or stairs typically fall under safety-glazing rules. Bedroom windows have egress requirements. Very large units are heavy, so they need planned handling and a properly prepared, flashed sill to sit on.

Housing era shapes the approach. An Eichler or other post-and-beam home often calls for large fixed glass that respects the original clean lines. On many 1950s–60s tract homes you'll find aluminum sliders set in stucco. Here a retrofit insert avoids cutting the stucco. A full-frame replacement lets us inspect the sill and flashing but means patching and blending stucco around each opening. Older Victorians and Craftsmans often reward the extra detail Signature can provide. Whatever the house, energy performance is confirmed against current Title 24 requirements through the unit's NFRC label and your local building department at permit time.

Our Marvin installation process

1. Consultation and measurement. We review each opening, discuss lines and configurations, and decide whether retrofit or full-frame is the right approach for your walls.
2. Permits and ordering. Where required, we coordinate with the local building department (AHJ), including fire-zone glazing and energy compliance, before the order is placed.
3. Careful removal. For retrofits, we remove the old sash and stops down to a sound frame. For full-frame work, we cut back cladding and trim to expose the rough opening, sheathing and existing WRB.
4. Inspect and correct. We check the sill, sheathing, WRB and flashing for water damage, and we repair rot or damaged sheathing before anything new goes in.
5. Flashing integration. We install a sloped sill pan, then jamb and head flashing lapped shingle-style with the WRB so water above the window drains outward, not behind it.
6. Install to Marvin's spec. Each unit is shimmed, set plumb, level and square, and fastened per the installation instructions. It is then sealed with low-expansion foam, backer rod and compatible sealant.
7. Finish and walkthrough. We restore the exterior and interior trim, test operation and locks, and go over care for fiberglass and wood surfaces with you.
