When a Los Altos home is built around its glass — the big garden-facing walls, the deliberate openings of a custom rebuild or a reworked Eichler — the window stops being a component and becomes part of the architecture. Marvin is the brand we reach for on those projects. It's a premium wood and fiberglass manufacturer known for large sizes, clean profiles, and the design flexibility to hit a specific look, and Bay Area Siding Company installs it throughout Los Altos on exactly the kind of homes where the openings are the point.

Considering Marvin? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

Built for big, deliberate openings

Marvin's reputation rests on handling scale and design intent that trip up lesser lines:

  • Large sizes. Marvin builds to generous dimensions, which suits the wide glass walls and expansive openings common on Los Altos's custom and mid-century homes — the openings that define how a room lives.
  • Design flexibility. Broad size, configuration, finish, and hardware options let a design land precisely rather than settle for the nearest stock size.
  • A material for each priority. The lines are organized around what you value most (below), from all-fiberglass durability to a true wood interior.

The three lines, kept clear

  • Signature — the architectural, highest-end tier: extruded aluminum-clad wood, the largest sizes, and the deepest customization, for a design-driven custom home.
  • Elevate — a fiberglass exterior with a warm wood interior, pairing low-maintenance durability outside with real wood warmth inside.
  • Essential — all-fiberglass, clean and strong, for a homeowner who wants Marvin's performance and profile without the wood interior.

That structure makes the choice legible: pick the line by whether you want a wood interior, an architectural custom build, or all-fiberglass simplicity.

Why fiberglass suits this city

Fiberglass is worth understanding on a Los Altos home. It's strong and dimensionally stable, which lets Marvin hold a slim, crisp frame on a large unit — the combination a glass-forward mid-century or modern home wants, where a heavy frame would undercut the design. And it's low-maintenance, which matters on the shaded, slow-drying elevations common under the city's tree canopy. Marvin's Elevate and Essential lines put that fiberglass reach within closer range, while Signature takes clad-wood to the architectural top end.

How it compares

For the Fibrex composite and premium clad-wood from a nationally recognized brand, compare Andersen. For a national brand spanning vinyl through wood at more price points, see Pella. For West Coast material breadth including aluminum and value fiberglass, Milgard; for California-made value vinyl with a strong warranty, Anlin. The window replacement hub frames the comparison. Doing the exterior too? See Los Altos siding replacement. Browse the project gallery and the South Bay service area.

How the job goes

A walkthrough of your existing windows and openings; precise field measurements, which matter more on large custom units where tolerances are tight; a line, frame, and glass selection sized to meet Title 24 and hold the design; the City permit; removal with the openings checked for rot or damage; installation set level and plumb, flashed and air-sealed; then trim, an operation check, and a walkthrough. Retrofit (insert) installs keep the existing frame; new-construction (full-frame) installs take the window to the rough opening so the flashing is fully renewed — often the right call on a Marvin project where the opening is being enlarged or reworked. Where openings sit under a mature tree canopy, we plan access to protect it.

Los Altos permits and fire glazing

Window replacement is permitted through the City of Los Altos Building Division, and because it's an energy-code alteration, a Title 24 fenestration form is part of the submittal — we handle it. On fire glazing: most of Los Altos is on the valley floor and not within a mapped high fire-hazard severity zone, so the Chapter 7A tempered/multi-pane rules that apply in the western foothills generally don't apply to city parcels. Designation is parcel-specific, so near the western edge we confirm your address before ordering, and Marvin units can be built with tempered glazing where a parcel requires it — as they can with tempered glass anywhere a large low unit needs it under standard safety-glazing rules.

What affects the cost

Marvin is a premium line, so the tier (Signature, Elevate, or Essential) and the size of the openings drive much of the number — large architectural units cost accordingly. Other drivers: the count of openings, the glass package for Title 24, retrofit versus new-construction method, enlarged or reworked openings, the condition of the existing framing, and access on upper stories or around protected trees. We measure and spec before quoting; no online prices.

FAQ

Which Marvin line is right for a design-driven custom home? Signature, usually — it's the architectural, aluminum-clad-wood top tier with the largest sizes and deepest customization. If you want a wood interior with a low-maintenance exterior, Elevate; if you want all-fiberglass simplicity, Essential. We'll match the line to the design and budget.

Can Marvin handle the big glass openings in my home? That's a core strength. Marvin builds to large sizes and design-specific configurations, which is why it's a common choice on the wide garden-facing walls and expansive openings on Los Altos custom and mid-century homes.

Is fiberglass better than wood for my shaded, damp walls? For low maintenance, often yes. Fiberglass (Essential, or the Elevate exterior) is dimensionally stable and needs little upkeep, which suits the slow-drying elevations under the tree canopy, while still holding a slim frame. A true wood exterior is beautiful but asks for more finish maintenance on those faces.

Do I need a permit for Marvin windows in Los Altos? Yes. The City of Los Altos Building Division reviews window replacement, with a Title 24 fenestration form part of the submittal. We prepare and file it.
