Marvin sits at the premium end of the window market, and it's the brand homeowners reach for when the windows are meant to be a design feature rather than a commodity: large openings, expansive glass, and the flexibility to build a unit to an architect's or an owner's exact vision. For the newer, larger homes climbing Hayward's foothills — and for period homes downtown that want genuine wood done right — Marvin's wood and fiberglass lines are frequently the answer. Bay Area Siding Company, based in Larkspur, installs Marvin windows across Hayward, and this page covers the lines and where they fit.

Built for wood, fiberglass, and scale

Marvin's strength is premium materials paired with real design range. The lineup organizes around three families:

  • Signature — the top architectural collection, built for wood and extruded-aluminum-clad wood, the largest sizes, and the deepest menu of shapes, finishes, and custom options. This is Marvin for a statement opening or a demanding design.
  • Elevate — a fiberglass exterior over a warm wood interior, marrying low-maintenance durability outside with the look of real wood in the room. A popular middle path for owners who want wood indoors without the exterior upkeep.
  • Essential — all-fiberglass, inside and out: the most maintenance-free of the three, strong and stable, with clean modern lines and large sizes.

Fiberglass is central to Marvin's appeal because it's exceptionally stable — it expands and contracts very little with temperature, so large units hold their seal and their operation over time. That stability is exactly what a big foothill picture window or a wall of glass needs.

Where Marvin fits in Hayward

  • Larger foothill homes. The homes toward the eastern foothills tend to be newer and bigger, often with substantial openings and design-forward elevations. Marvin's large sizes and configuration range are built for precisely that.
  • Period homes downtown. For a Craftsman or Spanish-influenced home near downtown, Marvin's Signature wood and clad-wood options deliver authentic wood detailing that respects the architecture.
  • Design-led remodels. Where an owner or designer wants a specific profile, finish, or unusual shape, Marvin's custom capability is hard to match at the volume brands.

How Marvin compares

  • Andersen — the other premium heavyweight; Andersen leads with its Fibrex composite, Marvin with wood and fiberglass. For a high-end project, compare the two directly.
  • Pella — also spans wood and fiberglass and reaches into premium tiers; another cross-shop at the top.
  • Anlin and Milgard — West Coast vinyl and fiberglass at value-to-mid pricing; the practical alternatives if budget leads over material and design range.
  • The window replacement hub lays out the whole field.

Retrofit or new-construction

A retrofit (insert) install sets the new Marvin unit into the existing frame and is less invasive; a new-construction (full-frame) install goes back to the framing so flashing and the water-resistive barrier can be fully renewed. With Marvin, full-frame is often the more natural approach — big or custom units and re-siding projects usually call for renewing the opening properly rather than inserting into an old frame. Where a retrofit does make sense, Hayward's rules expect the replacement to keep the original frame and format, and we make sure an insert doesn't drop a bedroom window below its egress minimum. We assess and recommend per opening.

Permits, energy, and foothill fire glazing

Hayward processes residential window and door replacements as same-day permits tied to a prescriptive Title 24 energy form, which we complete and submit. The windows have to meet the current energy code; we confirm those numbers at permit time rather than quoting figures that change by climate zone and code cycle. Tempered (safety) glazing is required in the code's hazardous locations — near doors, close to a walking surface, in stairways, and by tubs and showers — and we flag which openings that touches before ordering.

The requirement most relevant to Marvin's typical Hayward buyer is the foothill fire glazing. The eastern Hayward Hills and foothills — where many of these larger homes sit — fall within a Fire Hazard Severity Zone under the 2025 Local Responsibility Area maps. In a designated fire-hazard area, California Building Code Chapter 7A can add glazing requirements for exterior windows on top of the standard energy and safety rules, commonly multi-pane units with at least one tempered pane. On a large foothill opening, that detail matters for both compliance and cost, so we confirm whether Chapter 7A applies — which depends on the parcel and whether the work is a repair or an alteration — before we spec and order the glass.

What affects the cost

We price after a walkthrough. The drivers with Marvin: the line (Essential fiberglass through Signature architectural); material and any custom configuration; the number and especially the size of openings, since large units drive premium-brand cost; the glass package, including tempered or fire-zone glazing; retrofit versus new-construction; framing condition; and access, which is a real factor on hillside homes.

FAQ

Why choose Marvin over a vinyl brand? For large openings, custom configurations, real wood interiors, and design range, Marvin's premium wood and fiberglass lines offer what volume vinyl brands generally can't. If your priority is a straightforward, budget-friendly replacement, a West Coast vinyl brand may be the better value.

What's the difference between Elevate and Essential? Elevate pairs a fiberglass exterior with a warm wood interior — low-maintenance outside, real wood in the room. Essential is all-fiberglass inside and out, the most maintenance-free of the two. Signature sits above both for wood, clad-wood, the largest sizes, and full customization.

My foothill home has big windows — do they need special glass? Possibly. In a designated fire-hazard zone, Chapter 7A can require multi-pane glazing with at least one tempered pane for exterior windows, on top of the usual energy and safety rules. Whether it applies depends on your parcel and whether the work is a repair or an alteration, which we confirm before ordering — an important step on large, costly units.

Is fiberglass better than wood for Hayward's climate? Fiberglass is more dimensionally stable and lower-maintenance, which helps large units hold their seal and operation over time. Wood offers unmatched warmth and authenticity but wants more upkeep. Marvin's Elevate line lets you have fiberglass outside and wood inside — a common compromise here.
