Murphys is a small, unincorporated Gold Rush village in Calaveras County — a walkable historic Main Street, a wine-tasting town wrapped in Sierra foothill forest at roughly 2,200 feet. Its homes run the full range, from century-old buildings near the village core to newer wine-country and foothill houses tucked into the oaks and pines. Bay Area Siding Company, a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, replaces siding on both kinds of home: full tear-off, a hard look at what's behind the cladding, corrected weather barrier and flashing, and new siding installed to spec.

Thinking about a re-side? Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167 and we'll talk through your walls and your options.

Two very different Murphys houses, one honest decision

Most re-side conversations here start in one of two places, and the right answer isn't the same for each.

An older home near the village — clapboard, board-and-batten, or a house that's had wood siding cycled onto it over generations — is usually about character and about what decades of foothill sun and winter wet have done underneath. The goal is a wall that reads right for the setting without the endless scrape-and-repaint routine that dry summers and cold, occasionally snowy winters demand of aging wood.

A newer foothill or wine-country home is more often about material fit for the exposure: strong UV on south and west walls in long hot summers, moisture and freeze cycles in winter, and the plain fact that it sits in forested terrain. Here the conversation leans toward durability and, on many parcels, toward how the cladding performs around wildfire.

Naming which house you have is the fastest way to a useful estimate, so tell us early.

What comes off, and what we actually find

A standard re-side removes the old cladding down to the sheathing and substrate — it does not expose the studs, which stay covered unless the sheathing itself has to come off for repair. That tear-off is the whole point of replacing rather than layering new siding over the old: with the cladding gone, we can see the sheathing's condition, confirm whether there's a functioning water-resistive barrier (WRB) behind it, and correct flashing at windows, doors, and transitions that older foothill homes frequently never had done right. Covering over hides all of that and adds weight and moisture-trapping risk. Tearing off costs more up front and leaves you a wall that's sound from the sheathing out.

Picking a material

We install several systems and will walk the trade-offs at your house rather than over the phone:

We also work in wood and aluminum. On a forested Calaveras County parcel, material choice can involve more than looks — see the fire note below.

The Calaveras County piece: permits and forest exposure

Because Murphys is unincorporated, building permits don't come from a city hall — they're issued by the Calaveras County Building Department in San Andreas, which is the authority for siding and exterior work here. We confirm the exact permit path for your scope with the County rather than assuming it; that's part of how we scope the job.

The forest setting is the other thing worth raising up front. Much of the Sierra foothill country around Murphys carries genuine wildfire exposure — the 2015 Butte Fire burned across Calaveras County and is the regional memory most homeowners share. Where a parcel falls in a designated fire-hazard zone, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern exterior wall coverings, generally favoring noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials or tested assemblies. Whether and how it applies depends on your specific parcel's designation, the product, and the scope of work — it is not a blanket rule for the whole town — so we verify it with the County before speccing a fire-zone home. That's a reason noncombustible fiber cement comes up often on foothill parcels, but it's a parcel-by-parcel answer, not an automatic one.

What drives the cost

No prices online, because the variables are real: the size and number of stories; how much concealed substrate or dry-rot repair turns up once the cladding is off; the material and finish you choose; whether the home is a historic building where profile and detailing need to be matched carefully; site access on wooded or sloped lots; and any fire-zone assembly detailing on a designated parcel. We give you a grounded number after we measure, not before.

Working with us

We're based in Larkspur (Marin) and take siding work up into the Sierra foothills. Browse finished jobs in our project gallery, and see the wider region on our Sierra service-area page. Replacing windows in the same push? We do that too — see Murphys window replacement.

FAQ

Do I need a permit to re-side a house in Murphys? Murphys is unincorporated, so siding permits are handled by the Calaveras County Building Department in San Andreas rather than a city office. We confirm the exact requirement for your project with the County as part of scoping.

My place is an older home near Main Street — can you keep its character? Yes. Profile, exposure, and trim detailing can be chosen to hold the look of an older Murphys building, whether you stay in wood or move to a fiber-cement profile that mimics it with far less upkeep.

Should I re-side over the old material to save money? We generally don't recommend it on foothill homes. Layering over hides the sheathing, WRB, and flashing — exactly the areas where hidden water damage lives — and adds weight. A full tear-off is the only way to inspect and correct what's underneath.

Does living in the forest change my siding options? It can, on parcels within a designated fire-hazard zone, where Chapter 7A may call for noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials. It depends on your parcel, so we check the designation with the County before recommending a material.
