Full siding replacement for Calistoga homes — the Victorians and early-1900s cottages near downtown, the ranch and craftsman houses on the edges of town, and the properties tucked into the hills above the valley floor. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working throughout the wine country, and a re-side is one of the most effective ways to protect an older upvalley home while sharpening its appearance.

Two things are hard on cladding at the north end of the Napa Valley. First, the heat: summer afternoons here routinely clear 90°F, and the town has logged readings as high as 118°F. That relentless sun-and-UV cycle chalks paint, opens up checking and cupping in wood boards, and shortens the life of every field-applied finish. Second, the age of the housing: a lot of Calistoga's charm comes from homes built long before modern water-resistive barriers were standard, so what's behind the siding is often as tired as the boards themselves.
Signs it's past the point of another patch or repaint:
When several of those show up together, you're usually spending good money maintaining a wall that a re-side would solve for a decade or more.
Not every home needs a full tear-off — isolated damage can sometimes be repaired. But covering new siding over failing material is rarely the bargain it looks like. It hides exactly what you most need to see, adds weight, and can trap moisture against a wall that's already struggling. On an older Calistoga home, the value of a real replacement is the inspection you get along the way.
Tearing off the old cladding exposes the sheathing/substrate and lets us confirm there's a functioning water-resistive barrier (WRB) and correct flashing behind it — the layers that actually keep the wall dry. (A normal re-side stops at the sheathing; framing only comes into play if the sheathing itself has to be opened up, which is a larger scope we'd flag before doing.) Correcting the WRB and flashing while the wall is open is the difference between a re-side that looks good and one that lasts.
We install several systems and will walk the trade-offs on your home in person:
We also work with CertainTeed, wood, and aluminum. Two Calistoga realities steer the material talk: the town's historic character, which rewards profiles that respect the original proportions, and — for hillside and valley-edge parcels — wildfire exposure, which pushes noncombustible cladding to the front of the list. More on both below.
The job runs in a predictable arc, and we keep you in the loop at each turn: a walkthrough of your existing walls and goals; exact measurements and a written scope; permitting; tear-off with a substrate inspection; WRB and flashing set correctly; installation to the manufacturer's specs; and a finish-and-cleanup walkthrough at the end. Timelines depend mostly on the home's size and what we find once the old siding is off.
Permitting. Siding replacement is permitted work in Calistoga. Alterations to a building are handled through the City of Calistoga Building Division (City Hall, 1232 Washington St.), with applications accepted through the city's CitizenServe portal, by email, or in person. We handle the submittal. If your home is a designated historic resource or sits in a district with added review, that can affect approved materials and profiles, so we sort it out with the City before ordering.
Fire zones — for the parcels they apply to. Calistoga has real wildfire exposure; the 2017 Tubbs and 2020 Glass fires both prompted citywide evacuations. But the building-code piece is parcel-specific: CAL FIRE's 2025 maps place about half the city's acreage in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone — a Very High band on the northeast side along the Silverado Trail, plus larger High and Moderate areas — while much of the flat town core is unmapped. On designated parcels, Chapter 7A can require noncombustible or ignition-resistant cladding for the work being permitted. Whether it applies to your re-side depends on your address and scope, which is why we confirm it with the City rather than assume it. If you're on a hillside lot, tell us early — it shapes the material conversation.
Every re-side scopes differently, so we price after we see the home. The real drivers are the size and complexity of the exterior; the material and finish you choose; how much substrate repair turns up at tear-off; trim and detailing; access on hillside or vineyard-edge lots; and, on designated parcels, any fire-zone assembly requirements. We don't quote sight-unseen.
Do I need a permit to replace siding in Calistoga? Yes. Exterior alterations like a re-side go through the City of Calistoga Building Division. We prepare and submit the application; designated historic properties may carry additional review.
Is my Calistoga home in a fire zone that changes my siding options? Maybe — it depends on your parcel. Roughly half the city's acreage is in a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone, concentrated on the northeast side, while much of the town core is not. Where Chapter 7A applies, noncombustible cladding like fiber cement is favored. We confirm your specific designation with the City.
Should I re-side over the old material to save money? We generally don't recommend it on older homes. Covering over hides the sheathing, WRB, and flashing — the parts most worth inspecting — and can trap moisture. A tear-off costs more up front and gives you a wall that's sound from the sheathing out.
How long will a re-side take? It depends on the home's size, the material, permitting, and any substrate repairs found once the old siding is off. We give you a realistic window after we measure.
We'll assess your walls, talk materials suited to the valley, and lay out the process end to end. Also weighing windows or a specific fiber-cement scope? See Calistoga window replacement and Calistoga James Hardie siding, browse the project gallery, or explore the wine country service area.
