For a lot of Sonoma homeowners, the siding decision now starts with one question: how does this hold up if fire comes down the valley? James Hardie fiber cement is where that question usually lands. It's noncombustible, it's built in a line engineered for California's hot, dry climate, and — installed correctly — it lets a hillside or valley-floor home be genuinely more fire-resilient without giving up the look of a traditional Sonoma house. Bay Area Siding Company installs it across the wine country from our base in Larkspur, Marin.

The short version: In areas designated High or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, California Building Code Chapter 7A can require the regulated exterior wall assemblies to be noncombustible or a tested ignition-resistant assembly. Fiber cement is noncombustible, which is why it comes up so often for re-sides on exposed Sonoma parcels — untreated cedar or redwood generally does not qualify. Whether 7A applies to your project depends on your parcel's designation and scope, so confirm both before you spec.

The fire reality behind the material choice

This isn't an abstract concern in Sonoma Valley. The 2017 Nuns Fire burned through the surrounding hills and valley and destroyed homes in the areas outside downtown, and in early 2025 Cal Fire's statewide remapping — reflected in the City of Sonoma's revised Fire Hazard Severity Zone map — expanded the High and Very High fire-hazard areas in and around the city. Parcels on the east side toward the hills and along the wildland edges tend to carry the heavier designations, while much of the valley floor sits lower on the scale.

Here's the honest framing: living in the valley doesn't automatically mean your wall is deficient, and a fire in 2017 doesn't dictate a specific product for your house. What matters is your parcel's current designation and the scope of your project. Where a High or Very High designation applies, Chapter 7A governs the regulated exterior wall assemblies and openings — trim, soffits, and the wall covering, not just the field of the boards — and steers you toward a noncombustible material or a tested ignition-resistant assembly. Fiber cement is one of the recognized noncombustible options. Exactly what's required still turns on the product, the assembly, the designation, and the work being done, so we confirm it with the City of Sonoma rather than assume it applies wall-to-wall.

Why James Hardie for a Sonoma home specifically

Two things make it a strong fit here beyond the fire piece:

  • It's spec'd for this climate. James Hardie builds to regional specifications through its HardieZone system, and California falls in the HZ10 line — engineered for hot, dry conditions with heavy summer UV and seasonal moisture swings, rather than the freeze-thaw climates its other lines target. That's the right baseline for Sonoma's long, dry summers.
  • The finish outlasts paint on wood. The factory-applied ColorPlus finish resists fade and chalking through Sonoma summers with far less upkeep than repainting a wood-sided home every few years — a real consideration on the sun-exposed elevations here.

Fitting the town's older architecture

Sonoma's character homes — the Victorians and bungalows in the blocks around the Plaza, the ranch and mid-century houses filling the neighborhoods around them — don't have to trade their look for durability. Hardie's lap and shingle profiles can reproduce the exposure and trim proportions of a period home closely enough that the re-side reads as in-keeping, not as a modern overlay. If your property carries any historic overlay or preservation status, that shapes approved profiles, exposures, and colors, and we bring it into the plan with the City early.

What a correct install involves

The brand on the boards matters less than how the wall goes back together. On an older Sonoma home a proper Hardie re-side means:

  • Tear-off and substrate inspection. With the old cladding off, we check the sheathing and substrate for soft spots and hidden dry rot — most often around windows and at the base of the wall — and repair what we find before anything new goes on. (Framing only gets opened up if damage calls for it.)
  • Water-resistive barrier and flashing. A sound WRB and correct flashing at every window, door, penetration, and transition is what actually keeps the wall dry; this detailing outranks the cladding brand for long-term performance.
  • Clearances and fastening to spec. Hardie publishes required ground, roof, and deck clearances plus fastening and joint details, and the product warranty depends on installing to them.
  • Whole-assembly fire detailing. Where Chapter 7A applies, compliance is about the assembly — trim, soffits, and transitions included — not just swapping the boards.

Warranty

James Hardie backs its fiber cement with a transferable 30-year, non-prorated substrate limited warranty, and the ColorPlus finish with a 15-year limited finish warranty covering the factory paint against peeling, cracking, and chipping. Both are manufacturer warranties and both depend on installation to James Hardie's published specifications.

What drives the cost

The genuine variables on a Sonoma Hardie project are tear-off complexity and any concealed substrate repair found at inspection; the number of stories and access on hillside lots; the product line and finish you choose (ColorPlus versus primed-and-painted); window and trim integration if it's happening at the same time; and fire-zone assembly detailing where the parcel calls for it. A walkthrough is the only way to price it accurately.

FAQ

Does James Hardie meet Sonoma's fire-zone requirements? Fiber cement is noncombustible, and noncombustible wall coverings are among the compliant options under Chapter 7A, which governs regulated exterior assemblies on parcels designated High or Very High fire hazard. Whether it applies to your home depends on your parcel's designation and project scope, which we confirm with the City of Sonoma.

Is standard wood siding still allowed on an exposed Sonoma parcel? On designated High or Very High fire-hazard parcels, untreated cedar or redwood generally does not meet Chapter 7A's noncombustible or ignition-resistant requirement for the regulated assemblies. Fiber cement is one compliant alternative.

Which James Hardie line is right for Sonoma? The HZ10 line, which James Hardie engineers for California's hot, dry climate. The specific profiles and colors depend on your home's style and exposure.

Can Hardie keep the look of my older Plaza-area home? With deliberate profile, exposure, and finish selection, yes — the goal is a noncombustible wall that still reads as a traditional Sonoma home. Any historic overlay status is factored in up front.
