On the Tiburon peninsula, the glass carries much of the architecture. A hillside house off Paradise Drive or a view home stepped down toward the water is often organized around what its windows look at. That is why many homeowners here consider Marvin. It is a premium wood and fiberglass window maker known for large sizes and design flexibility. Bay Area Siding Company installs Marvin windows across Tiburon from our base in Larkspur. We handle field measuring, line and glass selection, permitting and Design Review coordination, removal, flashing, air-sealing, and the final walkthrough.

Weighing Marvin for your home? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167. We'll look at your openings and tell you plainly whether Marvin is the right fit or whether another brand serves the project better.

Why Marvin comes up on Tiburon projects

Marvin is not the budget choice, and we won't pretend otherwise. Homeowners usually choose it for three reasons.

  • Size and proportion. Marvin is known for large units and design flexibility. That matters when the goal is a wide, uninterrupted view of the bay or the city skyline rather than a grid of standard sizes.
  • Material options. Marvin works in wood and fiberglass. You can have a warm wood interior in the living spaces and a durable fiberglass exterior facing the weather.
  • Architectural fit. Tiburon includes older cottages near downtown and Ark Row as well as contemporary glass-forward hillside homes. A brand with a custom/architectural tier can match a period profile or a modern sightline where a stock unit would look off.

The trade-offs are real. Marvin costs more than mainstream vinyl. Wood interiors need finishing and care over time. The custom end of the lineup can carry longer lead times. If your priority is maximum efficiency per dollar on a straightforward replacement, compare it against Anlin or Milgard before deciding.

Elevate, Essential, or Signature: matching the line to the house

Marvin organizes its offering into three main collections. The practical differences come down to material, look, and how much customization you need.

| Collection | What it is | Where it tends to fit in Tiburon | |---|---|---| | Elevate | Fiberglass exterior with a wood interior | View rooms where you want wood warmth inside and a weather-facing fiberglass shell outside | | Essential | All-fiberglass construction | Lower-upkeep replacements on secondary elevations, bedrooms, or baths, or a whole-house option where wood isn't a priority | | Signature | Marvin's architectural/custom tier | Large or unusual openings, period-appropriate profiles, and homes where the windows define the design |

Many Tiburon homes don't need a single collection throughout. A common approach is to use Signature or Elevate on the main view wall and Essential in the less visible rooms. The goal is to put the budget where it shows and where it's lived with. We'll walk you through that mix on site rather than quote one line for every opening by default.

Salt air, sun, and frame choice

Much of the peninsula takes wind-driven bay moisture and salt air from several directions. On Tiburon homes that wears on insulating-glass seals, hardware, and metal frames. Fiberglass doesn't rust the way metal does, which is one reason fiberglass exteriors come up often in coastal settings.

Hardware, fasteners, and the surrounding wall still see that exposure. We talk through hardware finishes, and we detail flashing and sealant with marine exposure in mind. Choosing a premium frame doesn't remove the need for good installation.

The big south- and west-facing view windows common here also take a lot of sun. So glass selection is as much about glare and heat as it is about the frame. Dual-pane, Low-E insulated glass is the baseline. California's Title 24 energy code sets performance limits for replacement windows, and those limits depend on climate zone and code cycle. Rather than quote numbers, we confirm the current requirement at permit time and spec the Marvin glass package to meet it.

Permits, Design Review, and fire zones in Tiburon

This is where Tiburon differs from a routine replacement elsewhere. Premium, view-defining windows tend to raise these questions more often, not less.

  • Building permit. The Town of Tiburon requires a building permit for windows that are added or replaced.
  • Design Review. The Town notes that separate Design Review approval is required for many exterior items. Changing the size, grid pattern, material, or color of windows visible from the street or slope can fall under it. Tiburon looks closely at how homes read against its hillsides. If you're enlarging openings for a bigger view, which is a common reason to choose Marvin, plan for review. We build that path into the schedule. The exact track for your parcel and scope is confirmed with the Town's Community Development Department.
  • Fire Hazard Severity Zones and WUI. Parts of Tiburon are mapped in Fire Hazard Severity Zones, including Very High in places. There are also Wildland-Urban Interface areas along the wooded slopes and open space. In WUI areas, the California Building Code's Chapter 7A applies to exterior glazing and generally calls for multi-paned windows with tempered glass, among other requirements. Whether and how it applies depends on your parcel's mapped designation and whether the work counts as a repair or an alteration. We confirm it with the Town and the Tiburon Fire Protection District, then configure the Marvin units and glass accordingly. If your home backs onto open space, tell us at the first visit.

How a Marvin project runs with us

It starts with a site visit. We look at each opening, how you use the room, and what the view actually is. From there we recommend a collection and glass package opening by opening.

Next come precise field measurements, since custom and large units leave little room for error. Then comes the install method. A retrofit (insert) keeps the existing frame and is less disruptive. A new-construction (full-frame) install removes the old frame so the opening's flashing can be fully renewed. That is usually the better call where we find rot or past water intrusion at the sill or jamb.

While the order is in production, we handle the permit and any Design Review. On install day, units are set level and plumb, flashed, air-sealed, and trimmed. Every sash gets an operation check before the final walkthrough. If your siding is also near the end of its life, it can make sense to coordinate the two scopes. See our Tiburon siding replacement page.

What drives the cost of a Marvin project

We don't publish prices because the range is wide. These are the main levers:

  • Collection. Essential, Elevate, and Signature sit at different price points.
  • Size and configuration. Large view units and custom shapes cost more.
  • Glass package. Low-E options, tempered glass where required, and any upgraded glazing.
  • Install method. Retrofit versus full-frame, and any repair to rotted sills or surrounds.
  • Access. Hillside access and upper-story openings.
  • Finishes and hardware. Interior wood finishing, hardware, and divided-lite patterns.
  • Review scope. Changes that trigger Design Review can affect the timeline and drawings.

A written, opening-by-opening scope is the only honest way to compare Marvin against Andersen or Pella.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marvin worth it for a Tiburon home compared with vinyl? It depends on the openings. Marvin makes the most sense where windows define the house: large view walls, custom sizes, or period profiles where appearance matters. For standard openings on less visible elevations, a vinyl window may deliver similar comfort for less. We're happy to spec a mix.

Will changing my windows to Marvin require Design Review in Tiburon? It can. The Town of Tiburon requires a building permit for replaced windows. Separate Design Review is required for many exterior changes, such as window size, grid pattern, material, or color. A like-for-like swap may be simpler than enlarging a view opening, but either way we confirm the path with Community Development.

Can Marvin windows work on a Tiburon home in a fire hazard zone? Often, yes, but the configuration matters. In WUI areas, Chapter 7A generally calls for multi-paned glazing with tempered glass, among other requirements. Applicability depends on your parcel and scope. We confirm it with the Town and the Tiburon Fire Protection District and order units to match.

Which Marvin collection holds up best near the water? Fiberglass exteriors, as in Elevate and Essential, are a common choice for exposed coastal elevations because they don't rust like metal. Whatever the frame, hardware and installation details still matter in salt air, and we address both.
