Many San Anselmo houses are Craftsman bungalows, Tudor cottages, and shingle-style homes built before 1940. Their original windows were a big part of their character, and the wrong replacement can flatten a façade. That is usually why homeowners here start looking at Marvin. Marvin is a premium window maker known for wood and fiberglass products, for large and custom sizes, and for design flexibility that suits period architecture.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install Marvin windows throughout the Ross Valley. We handle measuring, line selection, the Town permit, removal, flashing and air-sealing, and the final walkthrough.

Why San Anselmo homeowners look at Marvin

Marvin is not the budget choice, and it doesn't try to be. It suits homes where the window is part of the architecture. In the Yolanda District, around Winship Park, and in the cottage blocks near downtown, a window has to do several things:

  • Keep the proportions. Wide casings, narrow sightlines, and the look of true sash matter on a 1920s bungalow.
  • Handle unusual openings. Older homes often have out-of-standard sizes, tall double-hungs, or bay groupings. Custom sizing is one of Marvin's strengths.
  • Feel right from inside. Several Marvin lines have real wood interiors that can be stained or painted to match original millwork.

If your goal is lower cost and low maintenance above all, other brands may serve you better. We cover that comparison below.

Matching the Marvin line to the house

Marvin organizes its products into collections. Three matter most for San Anselmo homes.

Marvin Elevate: fiberglass outside, wood inside

Elevate pairs a durable fiberglass exterior with a wood interior. For a Craftsman or Tudor, that is often the natural fit. You get warm wood where you live and a weather-facing surface that doesn't need regular exterior painting.

That matters in this valley. Shaded, damp elevations are hard on exterior wood, and the window page for San Anselmo notes how often original sashes swell, stick, or rot. Elevate is usually our starting recommendation for a homeowner who wants a wood interior at a more approachable Marvin price.

Marvin Essential: all fiberglass

Essential is fiberglass inside and out. It is a cleaner, lower-maintenance option and is often the most economical way into the Marvin name.

It suits:

  • postwar homes and remodels
  • rentals and in-law units
  • secondary elevations where a wood interior isn't a priority

Fiberglass holds its shape well through temperature swings. The trade-off is a painted-look interior rather than natural wood.

Marvin Signature: architectural and custom

Signature is Marvin's top tier. It is built for design flexibility, larger sizes, specialty shapes, and detailed configurations. It is the line to consider when:

  • a historic-character home needs a close match to original windows, or
  • an architect-led remodel calls for oversized or unusual units.

Expect the longest lead times and the highest cost of the three.

Divided lites. For Craftsman-style grille patterns, Marvin offers several divided-lite options, depending on the line. We confirm what each collection offers for your specific openings before we quote, rather than assuming every style is available in every product.

The honest trade-offs

Marvin is a strong product, and it's fair to know where it asks more of you:

  • Cost. Marvin sits at the premium end. The Elevate-versus-Signature choice changes the budget a lot.
  • Lead time. Custom and architectural orders can take longer than stock vinyl, so plan around it if your schedule is tight.
  • Wood interiors need finishing. Stained or painted interior wood is beautiful, but it is a finish you'll care for over time.
  • Budget and energy alternatives. If your priority is the most efficient window per dollar on a straightforward tract home, a vinyl line may be the more rational choice.

How the install goes in San Anselmo

Permits. Window replacement in San Anselmo generally requires a building permit from the Town of San Anselmo's Building Division. California treats replacement windows as an energy-code item, so a Title 24 fenestration compliance form is typically part of the submittal.

Allowable U-factor and SHGC values depend on climate zone and code cycle. We confirm the current targets at permit time and specify Marvin glass packages that meet them, rather than quoting fixed numbers. Dual-pane Low-E glass is the usual baseline for a cool, damp valley like this one.

Retrofit or full-frame. There are two ways to install replacement windows:

  • Retrofit (insert) install. The new unit goes inside the existing frame. It is less disruptive and keeps interior trim intact when the frame is sound.
  • Full-frame (new-construction style) install. The old frame comes out to the rough opening, so flashing and the connection to the wall's water-resistive barrier can be renewed.

On older, shaded walls where sills have gone soft or water has gotten in before, full-frame is often the better call. Marvin offers products for both approaches. We decide opening by opening after inspection.

Weather detailing. Each unit is set level and plumb, then flashed and air-sealed. Wet Ross Valley winters make that step as important as the window itself. On homes near San Anselmo Creek on the lower flats, we take particular care with sill flashing and drainage at each opening.

Hillside parcels and fire-zone glazing

Homes on the wooded slopes sit in terrain with real wildfire exposure. That includes Seminary Hill, the Bald Hill side of town, and near Sleepy Hollow. Cal Fire has been updating Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for local-responsibility areas across the Ross Valley.

Where California's wildland-urban interface provisions apply, replaced or altered windows may need compliant glazing. That typically means multi-pane units with at least one tempered pane, or another approved option. Whether this applies depends on your parcel's designation and the scope of work. The Town and Ross Valley Fire make that determination.

We check this during scoping, then confirm that the Marvin configuration we specify meets whatever applies.

What drives the cost of a Marvin project

We don't publish prices because every house differs. The main factors are:

  • Product line. Essential, Elevate, and Signature are priced very differently.
  • Units. The number, size, and shape of units, with custom and oversized pieces costing more.
  • Interior and exterior finish. Stain, paint, and exterior color choices.
  • Divided lites and hardware.
  • Install method. Retrofit versus full-frame.
  • Opening repairs. Any rot repair found once old units come out.
  • Access. Second-story and hillside access.
  • Glazing requirements. Any tempered or fire-zone glazing requirements.

A walkthrough at the house lets us give you a written scope rather than a guess.

Marvin compared with the other brands we install

Marvin's lane is wood and fiberglass for design-driven projects. Here is how the other brands compare:

  • Andersen is the closest premium comparison, known for its Fibrex composite and clad-wood options.
  • Pella spans vinyl through wood.
  • Milgard is a West Coast maker with vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum lines.
  • Anlin makes California-built vinyl windows focused on efficiency and value.

You can see all five side by side at our Marvin windows hub and the broader window replacement hub. For the local planning picture, read our San Anselmo window replacement page.

If the siding is also near the end of its life, it can make sense to coordinate windows with a San Anselmo siding replacement so flashing and trim tie together cleanly. Browse finished exteriors in our project gallery, or see the rest of our Marin service area.

Frequently asked questions

Which Marvin line suits a San Anselmo Craftsman or Tudor? Elevate is often the fit: a fiberglass exterior for the damp valley and a wood interior to match original trim. For a close historic match or unusual sizes, Signature offers more flexibility. We'll look at your openings and grille patterns before recommending one.

Do I need a permit to install Marvin windows in San Anselmo? Generally yes. Window replacement goes through the Town of San Anselmo's Building Division, typically with a Title 24 energy compliance form. We confirm the requirements and pull the permit.

My home is on Seminary Hill. Do my new windows need tempered glass? Possibly. Fire-zone glazing requirements depend on your parcel's hazard designation and the project scope, as determined by the Town and Ross Valley Fire. We confirm this early and specify compliant Marvin glazing if it applies.

Is Marvin worth it over vinyl? It depends on the house. On a period home where appearance and wood interiors matter, many owners find Marvin worth the premium. On a simple tract house focused on budget and efficiency, vinyl may be the better value. We'll price both if you'd like.
