Nothing settles into a Mill Valley hillside quite like real wood. Redwood and cedar clapboard, hand-split shingle and shake, board-and-batten — this is the material the town's canyon cottages and older custom homes were actually built with, and for owners who want their house to disappear into the trees, nothing manufactured fully replaces it. Wood is beautiful, renewable, and repairable board by board. But in Mill Valley it comes with two caveats we'd be doing you a disservice to soften: it's the highest-maintenance siding under this damp canopy, and it's combustible in an area where much of the land carries a fire-hazard designation. Bay Area Siding Company installs wood siding — and we'll tell you honestly whether your parcel is a good candidate for it.

Set on real wood? Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

Start with the fire question — on many lots it decides this

We lead here because on a lot of Mill Valley parcels it's the deciding factor. Much of the area and the surrounding Southern Marin Fire Protection District sits within the wildland-urban interface, and parcels carry Fire Hazard Severity Zone designations that can bring enhanced building requirements. Where those rules and the state's Chapter 7A exterior-wall standards reach a wall, the cladding generally has to be noncombustible or ignition-resistant — and untreated solid wood does not meet that bar. On a designated hazard-zone parcel, that typically takes natural wood siding off the table in favor of noncombustible fiber cement or James Hardie.

This is genuinely parcel- and scope-dependent, not a blanket ban — some Mill Valley lots fall outside the strictest rules, and how a project is classified can matter — so we confirm your parcel's designation with the City of Mill Valley before speccing. But the honest guidance is this: if you're on a high-hazard parcel and you love the wood look, the smart move is usually engineered wood or a wood-profile fiber cement, not the real thing. LP SmartSide is the closest wood-look substitute where the parcel allows it; fiber cement shingle and lap profiles get you a similar line without the combustibility.

Where real wood still earns its place

On parcels clear of the fire rules, wood is a legitimate and lovely choice:

  • The look is unmatched. Grain, depth, and a way of weathering that no manufactured product fully copies. On a period cottage tucked in the redwoods, wood is often the only material that reads as truly authentic.
  • It repairs board by board. A cracked clapboard or a rotted shingle course can be swapped without redoing a wall — a real advantage on a home you plan to keep and tend.
  • It's renewable and refinishable. Restain or repaint and the wall is renewed; you can change the color completely down the line.
  • Species matter. Redwood and cedar are naturally more decay- and insect-resistant than commodity softwoods, which is exactly why they became the traditional choice in these canyons.

The upkeep — be honest about the canopy

Mill Valley's shade is precisely what makes wood high-maintenance. Slow-drying north faces and damp canyon walls hold moisture against the wood, and moisture plus wood plus shade is how rot, cupping, and finish failure begin. Real wood needs its finish maintained on a regular cycle — more often on shaded elevations than sunny ones — plus attention to caulk, end grain, and ground clearance. Keep after it and wood lasts for generations; let the finish lapse on a wet wall and it deteriorates faster here than in almost any drier climate. If a low-maintenance wall is your real priority, wood is the wrong material and we'll say so — vinyl or fiber cement will serve you better.

Installed to shed water — because that's the whole game here

Whatever we hang, the value on a shaded Mill Valley lot is in the assembly. We walk the house, measure, and scope the full wall. Exterior work in Mill Valley is handled through the City's Planning & Building process, and fire-zone parcels may carry additional requirements, so it's worth settling material and confirming your parcel's status early. Tear-off exposes the sheathing so we can find the concealed rot and missing flashing that damp lots hide, install a water-resistive barrier and correct flashing, then back-prime and detail the wood to shed water and dry between wettings. Cost turns on the species and profile, stories and access, how much rot surfaces, the finish, and any enhanced fire-zone requirements. See our project gallery and our Marin service area.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put real wood siding on my Mill Valley home? It depends on your parcel. On lots with a Fire Hazard Severity Zone designation where Chapter 7A applies, untreated solid wood generally isn't permitted, and you'd use a noncombustible material instead. On parcels outside those rules, wood is a legitimate choice. We confirm your parcel's status with the City before recommending it.

How much maintenance does wood really need in the canyons? More than any other material, because of the shade and damp. Plan on a regular refinishing cycle — sooner on north-facing and canyon walls — plus upkeep of caulk and end grain. Maintained, it lasts a very long time; neglected on a wet Mill Valley wall, it fails quickly.

I want the wood look but I'm in the fire zone — what are my options? Engineered wood like LP SmartSide (on parcels that allow it) or fiber cement shingle and lap profiles both give a wood-like appearance while handling the fire and moisture demands better. We'll show you samples so you can judge the look for yourself.

Is redwood or cedar the better choice? Both are naturally more decay- and insect-resistant than commodity softwoods, which is why they're the traditional Mill Valley choice. Species, grade, and how faithfully the finish is maintained matter more than almost anything to how long a wood wall lasts here.
