There's a reason people still ask for real wood: nothing manufactured fully reproduces the grain, depth, and shadow line of cedar or redwood on a wall. Bay Area Siding Company installs and restores natural wood siding — clapboard, shingle and shake, and board-and-batten. But Paradise is not an average market for this material, and we'd be doing you a disservice to pretend otherwise. This is the most wildfire-sensitive town we work in, and wood is combustible. So this page is as much about when wood is the right call as about the material itself — and, just as often, about the fire-smart alternative that gives you most of the look without the risk.

Weighing wood for your home? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

Start with the fire reality, because it's the deciding factor

Paradise is rebuilding after the November 2018 Camp Fire — established in the public record as the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history, which destroyed the large majority of the town's structures. Reconstruction across the Ridge is happening under California's Wildland-Urban Interface rules, and for a wood cladding that changes everything. On a parcel carrying a fire-hazard designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can require noncombustible or tested ignition-resistant exterior wall coverings, and solid wood generally is not what satisfies that.

We treat that with the seriousness it deserves. Whether Chapter 7A applies to your parcel and scope depends on the mapped designation and the work involved, so we confirm the actual requirement with the Town of Paradise Building Division before speccing — we don't assume, in either direction. On a designated parcel, we'll be direct: fiber cement is the usual fire-hardening substitute, and it can be detailed in wood-grain lap or shingle to read convincingly like the real thing. Wood makes the most sense on a parcel that isn't designated, or on a project where the code path genuinely allows it.

What real wood gives you when it fits

Where wood is the right choice, its strengths are the ones no manufactured product fully matches:

  • Authentic look and depth. Real grain and shadow lines, and a finish that ages with character.
  • Repairability. A damaged board or shingle can be swapped individually, and the whole wall can be refinished rather than torn off.
  • Profile range. Clapboard, shingle, and board-and-batten each suit a different look, from a clean foothill traditional to a cabin-style exterior.
  • A renewable, natural material that many owners simply prefer on principle.

Species matters: cedar and redwood are the usual choices for their natural decay resistance and stability, which is why they've held up on older Sierra homes for generations.

The maintenance trade-off, stated up front

Even setting fire aside, wood asks the most of any siding. It must be kept painted or stained, and the foothill climate is demanding on it — hot, high-UV summers break down finishes on sun-facing walls, and wet winters test every unsealed edge. Left unmaintained, wood cups, checks, rots, and invites pests. If you love wood and your parcel allows it, you're committing to a finish cycle. If you want the wood look with far less upkeep, LP SmartSide engineered wood keeps much of the character with better durability — though it, too, is combustible and subject to the same code check.

Where wood fits, and where it doesn't

  • Right fit: a non-designated parcel, an owner who values authenticity and accepts the maintenance, and a home where the wood look genuinely matters.
  • Reconsider: a fire-hazard-designated parcel (look at fiber cement); an owner who wants low upkeep (consider SmartSide for the look, or vinyl for budget where the parcel allows a combustible cladding).
  • The middle path most Paradise homeowners land on: fiber cement in wood-grain lap, shingle, or board-and-batten — close to the wood look, noncombustible, and low-maintenance. The Paradise siding replacement page compares the whole field.

How we install and protect wood

Wood rewards disciplined work. We remove old cladding to the sheathing and substrate, inspect and correct the water-resistive barrier and flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations, and install the new wood with back-priming, sealed cut ends, correct fastening, and flashing that keeps water moving off and out. On walls that bake in summer and soak in winter, those details decide whether wood lasts decades or fails early. We'll set clear expectations on the finish system and the repaint interval so nothing surprises you later.

What drives the cost

Wood is a premium material, and we price after we measure. The drivers are the species and profile (cedar or redwood; clapboard versus shake versus board-and-batten), the home's size and stories, the level of detail and trim matching, how much substrate or WRB repair turns up at tear-off, the finish system, and access. It's also worth weighing wood's long-run maintenance against a lower-upkeep alternative — we'll lay that out plainly.

FAQ

Can I put wood siding on my home in Paradise? It depends on your parcel. On a fire-hazard-designated parcel, Chapter 7A generally calls for noncombustible or ignition-resistant cladding, and solid wood usually doesn't qualify. On a non-designated parcel it may be allowed. We confirm your parcel's status with the Town of Paradise Building Division before recommending.

If I can't use wood, can I still get the wood look? Yes — fiber cement in wood-grain lap or shingle gets remarkably close, and it's noncombustible and low-maintenance, which is why it's the common choice on the Ridge. Engineered wood is another option where the code path allows it.

How much maintenance does wood really need here? The most of any siding. It must be kept painted or stained, and the hot summers and wet winters are hard on finishes. Expect a repaint or refinish cycle over the years.

Do you confirm the fire requirements before quoting wood? Always. Given how much of Paradise carries fire-hazard designation, we verify your parcel's status and the applicable code path with the Town before we spec any combustible cladding.
