A redwood-and-oak setting makes a strong case for real wood on the walls. Cedar clapboard, redwood lap, board-and-batten, or shingles sit naturally among the trees in a way no other cladding fully matches. In Scotts Valley, though, that choice comes with two conditions. The first is upkeep on shaded, slow-drying lots. The second is fire-hazard rules on many mountain parcels, which can limit where standard wood is allowed at all.
Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working across the Santa Cruz area. We install wood siding and will tell you honestly whether it suits your house and your parcel.

Wood's appeal isn't only nostalgia. It has practical strengths:
Scotts Valley has many homes built in the 1970s and '80s. Some were originally clad in wood lap or shingles, and their owners want to keep that character rather than switch looks. For them, the question is usually how to do wood right this time.
Wood is the highest-maintenance siding we install. Scotts Valley's microclimate tests that hard. Redwood shade, cool damp air, and long wet winters mean walls dry slowly. North and west elevations often stay damp well into the day, and tree litter holds moisture against the boards.
On wood, that shows up as:
None of this rules wood out. It does mean the installation details matter more than the species. When we install wood siding, the job typically includes:
After installation, plan on regular refinishing. How often depends on exposure, finish type, and how much sun a given wall gets. Plan on more frequent attention on shaded elevations. Keeping gutters clear and vegetation trimmed back from the walls also goes a long way.
This is the conversation to have before you fall in love with a sample board. The 2020 CZU Lightning Complex burned across the Santa Cruz Mountains and pushed evacuation orders and warnings into Scotts Valley and its outlying parcels. Many mountain lots in and around the city fall within elevated fire-hazard designations.
On those parcels, California Building Code Chapter 7A governs exterior wall coverings on the regulated assemblies. It generally calls for noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, or assemblies that have been tested for the purpose. Untreated cedar or redwood typically won't satisfy that on its own. Some options may still be available:
Whether 7A applies to your home, and what qualifies, depends on your parcel's designation, the product, and the scope of work. We confirm it with the City of Scotts Valley Building Department and Cal Fire mapping rather than assume.
Where wood isn't a good fit, two alternatives are worth a look:
Some homeowners split the difference. They use wood on a protected entry or interior-courtyard wall and a noncombustible cladding on exposed elevations, where the code and parcel allow. We'll map that out with you.
Grade makes a real difference in knots, durability, and cost. We'll show you the options side by side. For a broader overview, visit our wood siding hub or compare every material on the siding replacement hub.
The project starts with a walkthrough and written scope, which includes confirming the fire-hazard designation early. Next, we handle permitting through the City of Scotts Valley Building Department. The city administers the California codes it has adopted; the 2025 cycle took effect January 1, 2026.
At tear-off, we remove the old cladding to the sheathing and substrate. That lets us inspect and repair the WRB, the flashing, and any damaged sheathing. The framing only comes into play if the sheathing itself has failed, which is a larger scope we'd discuss with you first.
Then we install new WRB and flashing, pre-finished or back-primed boards, and finish work, followed by a final walkthrough. Many owners replace windows at the same time so the openings are flashed once, correctly. See window replacement in Scotts Valley and our general siding replacement page for Scotts Valley.
Wood pricing depends on several factors:

Can I put cedar or redwood siding on my Scotts Valley home if I'm in a fire zone? Possibly, but not by default. On parcels where Chapter 7A applies, regulated wall coverings generally must be noncombustible, ignition-resistant, or part of a tested assembly. Standard untreated wood typically doesn't meet that. Some fire-retardant-treated exterior wood products or tested assemblies may, depending on the parcel and scope. We confirm with the City of Scotts Valley Building Department and Cal Fire before you choose.
How often will wood siding need refinishing under redwoods? It depends on the finish, the species, and each wall's exposure. Shaded, damp elevations generally need attention sooner than sunny ones. Proper back-priming, a drainage gap, and good flashing extend the interval, but wood always needs ongoing care.
Is wood more repairable than other siding? Usually, yes. Individual boards or shingles can often be removed and replaced without disturbing much of the surrounding wall, and new wood can be matched to existing profiles.
Should I keep my original wood siding or replace it? If the boards are sound and the problems are mainly finish-related, refinishing may be enough. If you're seeing rot, soft spots, or recurring moisture behind the cladding, a tear-off lets us fix the WRB and flashing underneath. Call (415) 619-5167 and we'll look at it with you.
