Real wood looks and ages in a way no manufactured board fully copies. Clear cedar bevel siding, redwood board-and-batten, and hand-split shakes all do this. You can also sand, patch, and refinish wood instead of throwing it away.

For many Windsor homeowners, the appeal is plain. The house is one of the town's 1980s–2000s builds, originally clad in hardboard, T1-11, or vinyl. The owner wants something warmer and more natural on the next go-round.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working across Sonoma County, and we install wood siding. We'll also tell you where it fits and where it doesn't. In this part of the county, that conversation always covers maintenance and fire exposure.

Considering wood for your home? Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167 to set up a walkthrough.

Why people still choose wood

Wood isn't the low-effort option, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling it. The homeowners who pick it usually value these things:

  • Authentic grain and texture. Cedar and redwood have natural variation that printed or embossed textures approximate but don't reproduce.
  • Repairability. A damaged board can be cut out and replaced, and a weathered wall can be refinished. You don't have to swap the whole elevation.
  • Finish flexibility. Wood takes solid paint, semi-transparent stain, or clear finishes. You can change the look later without re-siding.
  • Profile range. Lap and bevel siding, channel and shiplap, board-and-batten, and shingles or shakes. Each suits a different architectural style.
  • A renewable material. Wood is harvested rather than manufactured from minerals or resins.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

Maintenance is real. Wood needs its finish renewed on a schedule, and the calendar depends on the finish and the exposure. Walls that go too long without it start to check, cup, and let moisture in, and that is where rot and insects get a foothold.

Sun is the main wear factor in Windsor. Summers in the Russian River valley run hot and dry for months. Direct sun breaks down paint and stain, so the south- and west-facing walls will need attention sooner than the shaded ones. That isn't a flaw in wood. It's simply the upkeep reality of an inland valley site, and it's worth budgeting for.

Wet winters matter too. Wood that stays damp is wood that decays. Durability depends on keeping water off the back of the boards and letting walls dry, and that comes down to how the wall is built behind the siding.

Wood is combustible. In Sonoma County, you can't skip this point. It gets its own section below.

Fire exposure: where wood can and can't go

Windsor is a wildfire-exposed community. The 2019 Kincade Fire pushed evacuation orders across much of the town.

On parcels inside a designated fire-hazard severity zone, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern exterior wall coverings when siding is replaced. Where it applies, it generally calls for one of these:

  • noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials
  • wall assemblies that have passed specified fire testing
  • certain other listed options, such as fire-retardant-treated wood labeled for exterior use

Ordinary untreated cedar or redwood often won't meet the requirement on its own.

Whether any of this applies to your house depends on two things: your parcel's designation and the scope of the work. It is not a town-wide rule. We confirm it with the Town of Windsor Building Division before we spec anything.

If your parcel is affected, or you simply want to reduce ignition risk, there are two realistic paths:

  • A compliant wood-based product or assembly, confirmed against the code and the Building Division's requirements before ordering.
  • A hybrid approach. Use a noncombustible main cladding such as fiber cement or James Hardie, and save natural wood for limited accents where the rules and your comfort level allow.

Even off a designated parcel, some owners choose that hybrid route for peace of mind. We'll talk it through honestly rather than steer you.

Cedar, redwood, and profile choices

Western red cedar is the familiar choice for lap siding and shingles. It is relatively light and stable, and it takes stain well.

Redwood has deep color and natural decay resistance in its heartwood. It's a traditional Northern California siding species.

In both species, grade matters a great deal. Clear, vertical-grain boards behave very differently from knotty grades, both in appearance and in how well the finish holds.

On profile, most Windsor tract homes can wear horizontal lap or bevel siding cleanly. Board-and-batten suits a more rustic or farmhouse-leaning design. Shingles work well on gables and accent walls.

If your subdivision has an HOA, check its architectural guidelines first. Many Windsor neighborhoods have them, and they may restrict materials, profiles, or colors. We can spec to match once you know the rules.

How a wood re-side goes

The first step is removing the existing cladding. On a normal re-side, that takes the wall back to the sheathing and substrate, not the framing. At that point the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations are visible and can be corrected.

On homes from Windsor's build era, those layers are the part most worth inspecting. If the sheathing is sound, it stays. If we find damage, we show you before anything is covered up.

For wood specifically, a few installation details do much of the work of making the siding last:

  • a properly lapped WRB with flashing integrated at every opening
  • boards primed or sealed on all faces and cut ends before installation
  • corrosion-resistant fasteners suited to the species
  • where appropriate, a drainage or ventilation gap behind the siding so the backs of the boards can dry out between winter storms

We then finish the wall with the paint or stain system you've chosen and walk you through what upkeep to expect.

Replacing windows at the same time is often worth considering. That lets the window flashing and the new siding be sequenced together; see our Windsor window replacement page.

What drives the cost of wood siding

We don't post prices, because wood projects vary more than most. The main factors are:

  • species and grade (clear vertical-grain costs considerably more than knotty grades)
  • profile, since shingles and board-and-batten are more labor-intensive than lap siding
  • the size and height of the home
  • how much substrate repair turns up after tear-off
  • trim and window detailing
  • any fire-zone product or assembly requirements
  • the finish system, whether factory-applied or field-applied

Also weigh the long-term refinishing cost against lower-maintenance materials like LP SmartSide or vinyl, not just the upfront number.

FAQ

Can I use cedar or redwood siding on my Windsor home if it's in a fire zone? It depends on your parcel and the scope of work. Where Chapter 7A applies, ordinary untreated wood siding often won't satisfy the exterior-wall requirements. Options such as exterior-rated fire-retardant-treated wood or tested assemblies may, and so does a noncombustible main cladding with wood accents. We confirm your parcel's status and the acceptable approach with the Town of Windsor Building Division before ordering materials.

How often will wood siding need refinishing in Windsor? There's no single number. It depends on the species, the grade, the finish type, and especially sun exposure. Expect the south- and west-facing walls to need attention sooner than shaded ones, given the long, hot valley summers. Stains and paints also wear at different rates, and we'll explain the trade-off when you choose a finish.

Do I need a permit for wood siding in Windsor? Plan on it. Siding replacement is administered by the Town of Windsor Building Division under the California Building Standards Code. We confirm the scope and handle the permit as part of the job.

Is wood a good choice if I want low maintenance? Honestly, no. It's the highest-maintenance common siding. If upkeep is your top concern, fiber cement, LP SmartSide, or vinyl will serve you better. Wood makes sense when you value its look and repairability and are prepared to keep up the finish.
