There's a reason wood siding still gets specified on Calistoga's finest homes: nothing else quite matches the depth and character of real cedar or redwood, and on a Victorian near downtown or a high-end property in the hills, authenticity is worth paying for. Bay Area Siding Company installs and restores wood siding across the upper Napa Valley. We'll also be candid with you, because wood is the most demanding material we work with — the right choice in the right place, and the wrong one where a parcel's fire exposure or an owner's appetite for upkeep says otherwise.

Calistoga has a genuinely historic building stock — Victorians and early-1900s cottages downtown, plus the architecture of a long-standing resort and spa town — and wood siding is often original to those homes. When the goal is to keep or restore a period exterior authentically, or to give a new high-end home the warmth only real wood delivers, wood is the material:
Wood is renewable, it's repairable board-by-board in a way manufactured products aren't, and it can be stained or painted to almost any look. On the right home it reads as nothing else does.
Two realities have to be on the table before you commit to wood in Calistoga.
Upkeep is real and ongoing. Wood is the highest-maintenance siding there is. It has to be sealed, stained, or painted and then re-done on a cycle, and the valley's climate is hard on it — summer afternoons routinely clear 90°F with a 118°F reading on record, and that heat and UV break down finishes quickly, while the wet winters test every unsealed edge. Left unmaintained, wood cups, checks, rots, and invites pests. Budget for the finish schedule, not just the install, or the material won't reward you.
Combustibility, and the fire zones. This is the bigger caution. Wood is combustible, and Calistoga has genuine wildfire exposure — the 2017 Tubbs and 2020 Glass fires both forced the city to evacuate. CAL FIRE's 2025 maps place roughly half the city's acreage in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone — a Very High band on the northeast side along the Silverado Trail, plus larger High and Moderate areas — while much of the flat downtown core is unmapped. On a designated parcel where Chapter 7A applies to the permitted work, noncombustible or ignition-resistant cladding is favored, and solid wood siding may not be appropriate there. If your home is on a hillside or Silverado Trail-side lot, we'll usually point you to fiber cement — which can be detailed to echo a wood profile — and we confirm what applies to your address and scope with the City of Calistoga Building Division. On an unmapped downtown lot, wood remains fully on the table.
If you love the look but the maintenance or a fire-zone parcel gives you pause, there are honest middle paths:
We'll walk these against real wood honestly. The wood siding hub and siding replacement hub frame the whole comparison.
On a period home, wood work is often part restoration, part replacement — matching original profiles, splicing in sound boards where we can, and replacing what's too far gone. On a re-side, the old cladding comes off to the sheathing/substrate so the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing can be inspected and corrected — critical under wood, which depends on a dry wall behind it. New boards or shingles go on to spec, with back-priming and proper gapping, edge-sealing, and flashing that give a wood wall its best shot at longevity. Designated historic properties may carry additional review of profiles and materials, which we sort out with the City before ordering.
We quote after we see the home. Wood sits at the top of the material spectrum on both material and labor, and restoration adds care. Drivers: species and profile; the exterior's size and complexity; the extent of restoration versus replacement; substrate and WRB repair found at tear-off; the finish; historic-review requirements; and access on hillside lots. And remember the ongoing finish cost — it's part of the true cost of a wood exterior.
Can I put wood siding on my Calistoga home? On an unmapped downtown-core lot, generally yes. On a parcel in a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone where Chapter 7A applies, solid wood may not be appropriate for the permitted work and a noncombustible material is favored. About half the city's acreage is mapped, mostly on the northeast side — we confirm your parcel with the City of Calistoga Building Division.
How much maintenance does wood siding really need in this climate? More than any other material. Plan on re-sealing, staining, or painting on a regular cycle; the valley's heat, UV, and wet winters are hard on finishes. Kept up, wood lasts and looks superb; neglected, it fails.
Can I keep the historic look without solid wood? Yes. Woodgrain-textured fiber cement and engineered wood both read convincingly and cut the upkeep sharply — and fiber cement is the code-appropriate choice on fire-zone parcels. We'll show you samples against your home.
Do I need a permit for wood siding? Yes — a re-side is permitted work through the City of Calistoga Building Division, and a designated historic property may carry added review of the profile and material.
We'll assess your walls, weigh authentic wood against the look-alikes honestly, and — on a period home — talk restoration. Also weighing the whole exterior or new windows?
