Many Vallejo homes were built with wood siding. The Italianate and Queen Anne Victorians, Eastlake cottages, Colonial Revivals, and early-1900s bungalows in and around the city's historic districts were clad in wood, and on many of them that is still the right material. Bay Area Siding Company installs cedar and redwood siding in several forms: clapboard and lap boards, shingles and shakes, and board-and-batten. We handle projects of every size, from replacing a run of rotted boards to fully re-siding a house. We're a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working throughout Solano County. Our goal is to help you decide whether real wood fits your house, your budget, and the upkeep you're willing to take on.

Why homeowners here still choose real wood

The case for wood in Vallejo mostly comes down to architecture. On a period home, the siding is part of the design. The shadow line of a narrow reveal, the way boards meet corner trim, and patterned shingles in a Queen Anne gable are hard to fully replicate with other materials. Wood offers several practical advantages:

  • Authenticity. It matches what the house was built with, so new work blends with surviving original trim and detail.
  • Repairability. You can cut out and replace individual damaged boards, then prime and paint them to blend. That makes selective repair far more practical than with many manufactured products.
  • Workability. Wood can be milled, scribed, and shaped around the irregular walls and ornate trim common on older homes.
  • A renewable material with a natural look that ages well if it is properly finished.

Wood is not the lowest-maintenance choice, and it isn't the right fit for every lot. We cover the trade-offs below.

Fix what's failing, or re-side the whole house?

A lot of wood-siding work on older Vallejo homes starts as a repair question. The original boards may be sound on three elevations and failing on the one that takes the weather. Sometimes rot is confined to the bottom courses, where splashback and soil contact have done their work. In those cases, selectively replacing boards with matching wood is often the sensible, budget-friendly answer. We match the profile as closely as practical, whether that's lap, drop/channel, or shingle. Some older profiles may need to be sourced or custom-milled to line up.

A full re-side makes more sense when the problems are widespread. Signs of that include:

  • Soft, punky boards in many areas rather than a few
  • Paint that fails again within a couple of seasons of being redone
  • Splits and cupping across whole walls
  • Signs that water has been getting behind the siding

A full re-side also opens up the wall. With the old cladding removed down to the sheathing or substrate, we can inspect and install a proper water-resistive barrier and renew the flashing at windows, doors, and wall transitions. Many early homes were built without a WRB in the modern sense. Framing is only exposed if the sheathing itself has deteriorated and has to come off, which is a larger scope that we'd discuss with you before proceeding.

If you're weighing wood against other materials for a full replacement, the Vallejo siding replacement page covers that broader decision.

Species and profiles

Western red cedar and redwood are the two species we most often discuss for exterior siding. Both have natural resistance to decay and dimensional stability that suit cladding. Grade matters as much as species: clearer grades cost more but take finish better and have fewer knots that can loosen or bleed. For profiles:

  • Lap/clapboard and drop siding for Victorians, Colonial Revivals, and many bungalows
  • Shingles and shakes for Queen Anne gable ends, Craftsman-influenced bungalows, and accent areas
  • Board-and-batten for outbuildings, additions, and some rustic or modern designs

We'll help you pick a grade and profile that suits the house and the budget. We won't upsell you to the most expensive clear stock where it won't show.

Detailing for bay wind and moist air

Vallejo sits where San Pablo Bay narrows into the Carquinez Strait. Homes near the waterfront and on exposed rises see steady marine wind and salt-laden air. For wood siding, that exposure shows up in the details rather than the boards alone.

Fasteners come first. Cedar and redwood contain natural tannins that react with ordinary steel and cause dark streaking. Corrosion-resistant fasteners, such as stainless or hot-dipped galvanized, are the standard answer, and they matter more where salt air is present. Flashing and the WRB keep wind-driven rain out of the wall. Finish protects the wood itself. Priming all sides of the boards before installation helps limit moisture uptake, and a quality paint or stain system slows weathering from sun and moisture. On more exposed elevations, a ventilated gap behind the siding (a rainscreen approach) can be worth discussing. We'll tell you where it adds value and where it doesn't.

The honest trade-offs: maintenance and fire

Maintenance. Wood needs to be kept painted or stained, and the cycle is shorter on sun- and wind-facing walls. Caulk joints need attention over time. Rot and pests become problems when finish is neglected or water gets behind the boards. If a regular repaint schedule isn't realistic for you, consider LP SmartSide engineered wood or fiber cement. Both give a similar look with less upkeep.

Fire. Wood is combustible. Most of Vallejo's built-up neighborhoods are not in a high fire hazard severity zone, but some parcels along the northern and eastern hill edges can be. Cal Fire's zone maps were also updated recently. On a parcel with a fire-hazard designation, California's wildfire-resistant construction requirements (CBC Chapter 7A) can apply to exterior wall coverings. Whether and how they apply depends on the parcel, the product, and the scope of work. Some wood products and assemblies can meet those requirements and others can't. We confirm the designation for your address and the requirements with the City of Vallejo before recommending a material. On those lots, noncombustible fiber cement is often worth a serious look. See the Vallejo James Hardie page for that comparison.

Historic districts: plan the look before the permit

If your home is a designated landmark or sits in one of Vallejo's historic districts, the appearance of new siding may be part of what gets reviewed. Those districts include the Architectural Heritage District (the former Old City area) and St. Vincent's Hill. Exterior changes there can require a Certificate of Appropriateness before a permit is issued. The procedures are in Vallejo Municipal Code section 16.614.09 and are administered through the Planning Division. Material, profile, reveal, and trim can all come up in that review.

Matching wood with the original profile is often a straightforward proposal for a period home. Still, we scope the project with the review in mind rather than assume an outcome. Owners of pre-1978 homes should also know that older painted siding may contain lead-based paint, which affects how removal and prep have to be handled.

What drives the cost

Real wood is priced by the house, so we give you a number after we've measured and looked at the walls. The main cost drivers are:

  • Species and grade. Clear cedar or redwood costs more than knotty grades.
  • Profile and trim. Hard-to-match profiles may need custom milling, and ornate trim takes more labor.
  • Scope. Selective board replacement versus a full re-side.
  • Hidden repairs. How much substrate or rot repair turns up once the old siding is off.
  • Finishing. Priming and painting or staining.
  • Size and access. The number of stories and access on tight downtown lots.
  • Permitting. Whether historic-district review is involved.

Frequently asked questions

Can you match the original siding on my Vallejo Victorian? Usually, yes. Common lap, drop, and shingle profiles are available, and less common historic profiles can often be custom-milled. We compare samples against your existing boards so repairs blend with the original work.

Will I need historic review to re-side my house in Vallejo? Only if the property is a designated landmark or sits within a historic district such as the Architectural Heritage District or St. Vincent's Hill. In that case, a Certificate of Appropriateness may be required before the permit. We check your address early in the process.

Is wood siding allowed if my lot is in a fire hazard zone? It depends on the parcel's designation, the specific product, and the scope of work. We confirm your parcel's status and the applicable requirements with the city before recommending wood or an alternative.

How often will wood siding need repainting? It varies with sun and wind exposure, the species, and the quality of the prep and finish. South- and bay-facing walls typically need attention first. Good initial priming and sealing extend the cycle.
