Some San Mateo houses only look right in real wood. A craftsman-era bungalow with shingled walls, a period-revival home with a clapboard gable above stucco, or an older addition whose boards need to match the original all fit that description. Bay Area Siding Company installs natural wood siding, including cedar and redwood clapboard, shingles and shakes, and board-and-batten. We are a Marin-based siding and window contractor working across the Peninsula. We'll also tell you plainly when wood is the right material and when another product would serve you better.

Why San Mateo homeowners still choose real wood

Plenty of products imitate wood. What they can't replicate is how natural wood ages, takes stain, and patches into an existing wall. That matters in a city where a lot of the housing stock is early-to-mid-century and architecturally distinct.

Homeowners here tend to choose wood for a few reasons:

  • Matching what's already there. If most of your siding is sound and only a gable, a bay, or one elevation has failed, new wood in the same species and profile can blend with the old once it's finished. A substitute material often reads as a patch.
  • Period correctness. On Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, and craftsman-influenced homes, siding is frequently an accent: dormers, gables, and additions set against stucco. The texture and shadow line of real wood suit those details.
  • Repairability. A damaged wood board or shingle can be cut out and replaced individually. That is a real long-term advantage on a house you plan to keep.
  • A renewable, natural material. Some owners simply want wood on a wood-era house.

Species and profiles we install

Western red cedar is the most common choice for shingles and clapboard. It's relatively light, stable, and takes both paint and stain well. Redwood is traditional on Bay Area homes and is often chosen when matching existing redwood siding. Availability and grade vary, so we discuss sourcing during the consultation rather than promising a specific grade up front.

Profiles we frequently work with on the Peninsula:

  • Bevel / clapboard lap siding. This is the classic horizontal board, and exposure width is key to matching an older wall.
  • Shingles and shakes. Sawn shingles give a crisp, uniform course line. Shakes are thicker and more rustic. Shingled gables and full shingle walls both appear on older San Mateo homes.
  • Board-and-batten. Vertical boards with battens over the joints, suited to additions, accessory structures, and some cottage-style homes.
  • Shiplap and tongue-and-groove patterns, when an existing wall uses them.

We measure the existing exposure, board thickness, and corner and trim details before ordering, so new work lines up with the old.

The honest trade-offs

Wood is the most demanding siding we install, and it's only fair to say so before you commit.

Maintenance. Natural wood needs its paint or stain renewed on a regular cycle. How often depends on exposure, finish, and how the wall is detailed. South- and west-facing walls take more sun; shaded walls stay damp longer after San Mateo's foggy mornings and winter rain. Neglected wood can check, split, cup, and eventually rot.

Pests and moisture. Wood that stays wet is vulnerable to decay and insects. Good installation reduces that risk but doesn't remove the need for upkeep.

Fire. Wood siding is combustible. If a particular parcel is mapped in a fire hazard severity zone or wildland-urban interface area, California's Chapter 7A requirements can limit which exterior wall materials qualify. Those requirements depend on the parcel, the product, and the scope. We check the parcel's status and confirm with the City before specifying. Where wood can't be used or isn't prudent, fiber cement is the noncombustible alternative we'd point you toward.

Cost. Quality cedar and redwood, plus the labor to install and finish them well, usually put wood at the upper end of the material range.

Wood vs. the look-alikes

If you love the look but not the upkeep, compare these alternatives before deciding:

  • LP SmartSide engineered wood gives a wood texture with a treated-strand core. It's lighter and easier to work than fiber cement, but it still needs periodic painting.
  • Fiber cement, including James Hardie in San Mateo, is dimensionally stable, noncombustible, and holds paint well. It comes in lap, shingle, and panel profiles that suit period trim, though it won't stain like natural wood.
  • Real wood is the right answer when authenticity, stainability, board-for-board matching, or piece-by-piece repair matters most.

Installing wood so it lasts

Most wood siding problems trace back to water management, not the wood itself. When we re-side with wood, the old cladding comes off down to the sheathing. That lets us inspect the sheathing, the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and the flashing. Framing is only exposed if the sheathing itself has failed and has to be replaced, which is a larger scope we'd discuss with you before proceeding.

From there, the job typically includes:

  • Repairing any damaged sheathing found once the old siding is off.
  • A new WRB and properly lapped flashing at windows, doors, roof-wall intersections, and penetrations. We take extra care where new wood meets existing stucco, a common transition on San Mateo's period homes.
  • Sealing all sides and cut ends of the boards before or during installation, so moisture isn't drawn in from the back or the end grain.
  • Corrosion-resistant fasteners suited to the species, which helps prevent staining and holds up over time.
  • A drainage gap or rainscreen behind the siding where the design and budget allow, so the back of the boards can dry.
  • Finish with your choice of paint, solid stain, or semi-transparent stain.

If new windows in San Mateo are on your list, doing them alongside the siding lets us integrate the flashing once instead of twice.

Permits and San Mateo's historic neighborhoods

Siding work in San Mateo requires a building permit, and we handle the application with the City. The State Office of Historic Preservation has identified the Baywood, Aragon, and San Mateo Park neighborhoods as National Register– or California Register–eligible historic areas. A 2022 City analysis also found the Baywood study area meets National Register district criteria.

Recognition alone doesn't automatically restrict what you can do. Whether any design review applies depends on your address and your scope. We confirm that with City staff before finalizing the spec. Where review does come into play, matching wood siding is often the easiest material to justify.

What drives the cost

Every job is quoted individually. The main factors are:

  • Scope: a full re-side versus a gable, dormer, or single elevation.
  • Species and grade of the wood.
  • Profile complexity: shingle work is slower than lap siding.
  • Sheathing repair found after tear-off.
  • Trim and detailing: period homes often carry more of it.
  • Height and access.
  • Finish: field-applied paint or stain versus pre-finished material.

FAQ

Is real wood siding a good idea in San Mateo's climate? It can be, with the right detailing and upkeep. The Peninsula's fog-and-sun cycle is milder than inland heat, but shaded walls stay damp longer after foggy mornings and winter rain. Proper flashing, sealed boards, and a regular refinishing schedule are what keep wood performing.

Can you match the old shingles or clapboard on part of my house? Usually, yes. We match species, exposure, thickness, and profile. Once the new wood is painted or stained, it blends with the original wall.

Will my historic-area home require design review for wood siding? It depends on the property and the scope. Several San Mateo neighborhoods are register-eligible, but eligibility alone doesn't impose restrictions. We confirm with the City before work begins.

How often will I need to repaint or re-stain? It varies with sun exposure, the finish you choose, and how the wall is detailed. We'll give you realistic expectations for your specific elevations during the consultation.
