Nothing reads quite like real wood on a house. On the older homes near downtown Stockton and in the Magnolia District, wood siding is often the original material. Replacing it with anything else changes the character of the façade. Other homeowners across the city want the warmth of cedar shingles or redwood lap on a newer build.

Bay Area Siding Company installs and replaces natural wood siding throughout Stockton. Our work includes bevel and lap boards, drop and shiplap profiles, board-and-batten, and cedar shingles and shakes. We finish each job so it can stand up to San Joaquin Valley summers.

This page is honest about the trade-offs. Wood is a beautiful, repairable, renewable material. It also asks more of its owner than any other cladding we install, and Stockton's sun is part of the reason.

Considering wood for your home? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167 to talk it through.

Who wood siding is really for

Wood makes the most sense for three kinds of Stockton homeowners:

  • Owners of period homes. Victorians, Craftsman bungalows, and early-20th-century houses near downtown were built with wood cladding. Board width, reveal, and profile are part of the architecture. Real wood is the most straightforward way to match what's already there, whether you're replacing one damaged wall or the whole house.
  • Homeowners who want a natural finish. Stained cedar or redwood has a grain and depth that painted composites imitate but don't duplicate.
  • People willing to maintain it. If a periodic re-stain or repaint sounds like a reasonable part of owning a house, wood rewards the effort. If it sounds like a chore you'll put off, keep reading. There are alternatives below that deliver much of the look with less upkeep.

The honest trade-offs

Maintenance is the big one. Wood has to be kept sealed with paint or stain. Once the finish breaks down, the wood underneath is exposed to moisture and ultraviolet light. That exposure leads to checking, cupping, graying, and eventually decay.

In Stockton, UV is the main factor to plan around. The Valley's long, bright, hot summers break down wood finishes faster than a mild coastal climate does. South- and west-facing walls take the brunt of it. This is well documented in wood-finishing research, and the practical takeaway is simple:

  • Clear and lightly pigmented finishes weather fastest in strong sun.
  • More heavily pigmented stains and quality paint systems protect the wood surface longer.

We'll help you choose a finish based on how each wall of your house is actually exposed.

Movement and heat. Wood expands and contracts with changes in moisture. Stockton's dry summers and wetter winters are a real seasonal swing. Good installation practice accounts for this movement, including correct fastening, proper joints, and letting the material acclimate. Priming or sealing all sides of the boards before they go up also helps them stay flat and hold their finish.

Pests and decay. Cedar and redwood heartwood carry natural compounds that give them some resistance to decay and insects. That resistance is not immunity. Good flashing, clearances from grade, and a maintained finish still matter.

Combustibility. Wood burns, and in genuine wildfire zones that's a serious consideration. Stockton's flat, developed core generally sits outside CAL FIRE's Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, so for most city lots wood isn't ruled out by fire code. If your parcel is on the urban edge, we confirm its designation and any Chapter 7A requirements with the City before recommending a material. Those requirements depend on the parcel and the scope of work. Homeowners who want a noncombustible option can look at fiber cement.

Profiles and species we work with

  • Bevel/lap (clapboard). The classic horizontal board. Reveal and thickness vary widely, and matching the original matters on older homes.
  • Drop, channel, and shiplap siding. These are common on older Valley houses. The profiles interlock or overlap, and they often need to be sourced or milled to match existing boards.
  • Board-and-batten. Vertical boards with narrow battens over the seams. It suits farmhouse-style and some mid-century designs.
  • Cedar shingles and shakes. Used for full walls or as accent gables, which is a familiar detail on Craftsman-era homes.

Western red cedar and redwood are the usual species choices. Grade affects both appearance and price: clear, vertical-grain stock looks and behaves differently than knotty material. We'll walk through samples with you.

Repair, partial replacement, or full re-side?

One real advantage of wood is that it's repairable. Damaged boards can be cut out and replaced individually. On an older Stockton home with mostly sound siding and a few rotted sections at the base of a wall, targeted replacement may be the right answer. The new boards are matched to the original profile and blended in with finish.

When failure is widespread, a full re-side is usually the better investment. Signs include:

  • Soft, split, or cupped boards on several elevations
  • Paint that won't stay on
  • Moisture showing up inside the house

In a full re-side, we remove the existing cladding to the sheathing/substrate so the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing can be inspected. On many older houses, those layers are missing, degraded, or were never detailed well around windows and doors. We repair the substrate where needed, install or renew the WRB, and correct the flashing before any new wood goes on. Where it suits the assembly, we can discuss a rainscreen gap behind the siding, which gives the backs of the boards room to dry.

For the broader decision about whether to re-side at all, and with which material, see our Stockton siding replacement page.

Wood vs. the alternatives

If you love the look but not the upkeep, compare wood with these options:

  • LP SmartSide. Engineered wood with a real-wood texture that's easier to work with. It still needs paint, but it's built to resist the problems that plague untreated wood.
  • James Hardie fiber cement. Noncombustible and dimensionally stable, with a factory-baked ColorPlus finish option that holds up well against fading. See our Stockton James Hardie page.
  • Vinyl or CertainTeed cedar-look lines. These are the lowest-maintenance route to a shingle or lap look, with their own heat-related considerations.

Our wood siding hub covers the material in more depth across the Bay Area and beyond.

Permits and how the job goes

Exterior re-siding in Stockton is permitted work through the City of Stockton's Building & Life Safety division, and we handle the permit and inspections. If your home is a designated historic property or sits within a historic district, exterior changes may involve additional City review. We check that early so it doesn't stall the schedule.

The work itself follows a clear sequence:

  1. Measure and write a scope that notes species, grade, and profile.
  2. Order material and allow it to acclimate.
  3. Remove the old cladding and inspect what's behind it.
  4. Make substrate, WRB, and flashing corrections.
  5. Install the new wood and trim.
  6. Prime, paint, or stain.
  7. Walk the finished exterior with you.

If you're also updating windows, doing both at once lets the flashing be detailed as one system. See our Stockton window replacement page.

What drives the cost

Wood pricing depends on several factors:

  • Species and grade
  • Profile, and whether a historic profile has to be custom-milled or specially sourced
  • Factory pre-finished versus field-applied finish
  • How much substrate or rot repair turns up at tear-off
  • The amount of trim detail
  • Number of stories and access around the lot

A full re-side of a two-story Victorian with matched drop siding is a very different job from shingle accents on a single-story home. We price after we've seen the house. You can browse finished work on our projects page and explore the rest of our service areas.

FAQ

How often will wood siding need refinishing in Stockton? It depends on the finish type, the product, and each wall's sun exposure. Stockton's strong summer UV is hard on wood finishes, so south- and west-facing walls typically need attention before shaded ones. Pigmented stains and quality paint systems generally last longer than clear finishes. We'll recommend a system and tell you what to watch for.

Can you match the original siding on my older downtown or Magnolia District home? In many cases, yes. We identify the profile, board width, and reveal, then source or have boards milled to match. Where most of the siding is sound, targeted board replacement can preserve the original material.

Is wood siding allowed in Stockton given fire codes? For most Stockton lots, yes. The city's developed core generally falls outside CAL FIRE's Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Requirements depend on the specific parcel and scope, so we confirm with the City of Stockton before finalizing the material on edge-of-city properties.

Do I need a permit to replace wood siding in Stockton? Exterior re-siding is permitted work through the City of Stockton's Building & Life Safety division. We pull the permit and schedule the inspections.
