Some San Rafael homes are meant to be wood. Examples include a Terra Linda Eichler with vertical grooved panels, a shingled cottage near downtown, and a board-and-batten house tucked into the hills. For these homes, real cedar or redwood is often the material that keeps the architecture honest. Bay Area Siding Company installs and replaces natural wood siding throughout San Rafael from our base a few minutes south in Larkspur. We'll also tell you plainly when a different material would serve your parcel better.

What wood siding offers, and what it asks of you

Natural wood gives a home grain, depth, and variation that manufactured products imitate but don't fully reproduce. It is renewable. It is also one of the few claddings you can repair board by board. A damaged course of clapboard or a few split shingles can be cut out and replaced, then finished to blend in, without re-siding a whole wall.

The trade-offs are real, and we'd rather you hear them before you commit:

  • Maintenance is ongoing. Wood needs paint or stain on a regular cycle. Neglected finishes let moisture in, and that leads to checking, cupping, and rot.
  • Pests and decay. Cedar and redwood resist decay better than many species, but they are not immune. Wall details that trap water will shorten any wood's life.
  • Combustibility. Wood burns. In San Rafael's mapped fire hazard areas this is the most important question, and we cover it in detail below.
  • Cost posture. Clear, high-grade cedar and redwood are premium materials. Knottier grades cost less and read more rustic.

If those trade-offs work for you, wood rewards the upkeep. If they don't, fiber cement and LP SmartSide engineered wood both offer wood-like profiles with a different maintenance and fire profile.

Profiles that fit San Rafael's housing

San Rafael's housing stock spans several eras, and the wood profile should follow the house.

Terra Linda and other mid-century homes. Many Eichlers and related mid-century designs were built with vertical grooved wood panel siding. It forms the long, clean lines that define the look. When that siding has weathered past saving, we can replace it with vertical wood profiles that hold the same rhythm, so the house doesn't lose its character. Some owners choose a wood-look alternative here instead, which is a legitimate choice we're happy to price side by side.

Older neighborhoods near downtown. In areas like Gerstle Park, older homes often carry horizontal lap siding or wood shingles. Matching exposure, board width, and corner treatment matters more than most people expect. A mismatched reveal is usually what makes a patch obvious.

Hillside and wooded lots. Board-and-batten and shingle profiles suit the more rustic homes above the city. Many of these parcels, however, are exactly where fire-zone rules come into play.

We install cedar and redwood in clapboard/bevel lap, shingle and shake, board-and-batten, and vertical tongue-and-groove or channel profiles. The Bay Area wood siding hub goes deeper on species and grades.

Wood siding and San Rafael's fire hazard zones

Much of San Rafael's wooded, hillside terrain carries a wildfire designation. Under SB 63, the state's 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone update mapped Moderate, High, and Very High zones in Local Responsibility Areas. The City has noted these maps largely mirror its existing Wildland-Urban Interface boundaries, which already carry specific building requirements. San Rafael also enforces vegetation management standards citywide.

Where California's Chapter 7A wildfire standards apply, exterior wall coverings generally must meet ignition-resistance criteria. Untreated wood siding may not qualify. Certain fire-retardant-treated wood products rated for exterior use, and some tested assemblies, can be options. Whether they're allowed depends on your parcel's designation, the product, and the scope of work. We confirm the specifics with the City of San Rafael's Building Division before recommending anything.

On a fire-zone parcel where treated wood isn't a practical fit, we'll say so. In that case, a James Hardie fiber cement profile that mimics lap, shingle, or vertical wood is often the sensible path. Some owners also use wood as an accent in areas where it's permitted.

How we install wood so it lasts

On a replacement, the old siding comes off down to the sheathing. That lets us inspect the sheathing, the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and the flashing, and repair them where needed. Framing is only exposed if damaged sheathing itself has to be removed, and we'd discuss that with you first because it changes the scope.

From there, the details decide how long wood lasts:

  • A properly lapped WRB, plus flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations
  • An optional rainscreen gap behind the siding, where appropriate, so the back of the boards can dry
  • Sealing or priming cut ends and backs per the manufacturer's or supplier's guidance
  • Corrosion-resistant fasteners, since cedar and redwood can stain around ordinary nails
  • Clearance at grade and at roof-wall intersections so boards aren't wicking water

San Rafael gets both marine fog and warm inland sun, and some walls sit in shade year-round. We don't claim any single weather pattern causes a particular failure. We do look at each elevation's actual exposure when planning finish and detailing, because a shaded, slow-drying wall and a sun-baked one wear differently. Replacement generally requires a building permit from the City of San Rafael, and we coordinate that as part of the job.

What shapes the cost of a wood siding project

We don't quote prices without seeing the house, but these are the factors that move the number:

  • Species and grade. Clear versus knotty, cedar versus redwood, and current availability.
  • Profile. Shingles and custom-milled boards take more labor than standard lap.
  • Finish. Factory-primed or pre-stained stock versus field-applied paint or stain.
  • Substrate repair. How much sheathing, WRB, and flashing work turns up after tear-off.
  • Access. Steep hillside lots and multi-story walls need more staging.
  • Fire-zone requirements. These can dictate treated products or a different material altogether.
  • Trim and matching. Partial replacements that must blend with existing siding take more care.

For the broader re-side decision across all materials, see our San Rafael siding replacement page. If new windows are part of the plan, our San Rafael window replacement team can sequence both so flashing is detailed once, correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use real wood siding if my San Rafael home is in a fire hazard zone? Possibly, but it depends. Where Chapter 7A applies, standard untreated wood may not meet the exterior wall requirements. Certain fire-retardant-treated or tested wood products may qualify. We verify your parcel's designation and confirm acceptable products with the City before specifying anything.

Can you replace just the damaged sections instead of the whole house? Often, yes. Repairability is one of wood's strengths. We match species, profile, and exposure as closely as possible. Keep in mind that new wood will look different from weathered boards until it's finished and has aged a bit.

How often will I need to repaint or restain? It depends on the finish, the species, and each wall's exposure. Sunny elevations usually need attention sooner than shaded ones. We'll explain what to expect for your specific finish choice.

Is wood the right choice for my Terra Linda Eichler? It can be, especially if preserving original vertical wood character is the priority. We'll also show you wood-look alternatives with lower maintenance so you can decide with both in front of you.
