Nothing quite matches real wood on a house. Cedar and redwood clapboard, shingle and shake, board-and-batten — the depth of grain, the way it takes stain, the shadow lines it throws all read as authentic in a way no manufactured product fully copies. For an El Sobrante home where natural character is the whole point, especially a cottage or a canyon cabin set among the trees, solid wood is a beautiful and repairable choice. Bay Area Siding Company installs and restores wood siding, and this page gives you the honest picture — the appeal, the upkeep, and the one question that decides it on a fire-exposed lot.

Wood siding earns its premium on looks and warmth:
It is also a renewable material, and — unlike most claddings — it is genuinely repairable board by board, so a damaged section can be swapped without redoing a wall. Refinish it and it looks new again.
Wood asks for more than any other material we install, and two points are decisive:
This is the single most important thing to settle before choosing wood in El Sobrante. The community climbs into wooded canyons and up toward Sobrante Ridge, and the state redrew the fire-hazard maps for Contra Costa's unincorporated Local Responsibility Area effective July 10, 2025, with high and very-high hazard areas along the ridgelines. On a parcel carrying one of those designations, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering, and standard untreated cedar or redwood generally does not meet the noncombustible or ignition-resistant standard the code steers toward. On those lots the appropriate choice is usually fiber cement or James Hardie, whose profiles can mimic wood convincingly while giving you a noncombustible wall — or, where a wood look is wanted with less upkeep on a non-fire lot, LP SmartSide engineered wood. Whether Chapter 7A applies to your address depends on the parcel's mapped designation, the product, and the scope, so we confirm it with Contra Costa County before speccing.
Where solid wood makes the most sense in El Sobrante is a flatter lot with no fire designation, on an owner who values authentic material and character and will commit to the maintenance. There, it is a genuinely good choice.
Because El Sobrante is unincorporated, the permit for a re-side comes from the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development, Building Inspection Division (925-655-2700). Routine painting and refinishing are exempt under the county's ordinance, but replacing the exterior wall covering is not, so a full wood re-side generally requires a permit — and on a mapped fire-hazard parcel the material question above becomes part of that review. We handle the submittal and confirm what applies to your parcel.
Wood sits at the premium end of the market, and the quote moves with the species and grade (clear cedar and redwood cost more than knotty grades), the profile (shakes and board-and-batten differ from lap), the size and shape of the home, the number of stories and how reachable the walls are, whether you paint or stain, and what tear-off uncovers behind the old cladding. The siding comes off to the sheathing so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected, and any concealed rot adds scope. Factor in, too, the long-term cost of the maintenance cycle — real over the life of the wall. Canyon or hillside access and county permitting round it out.
Can I put wood siding on a home near Sobrante Ridge or up a canyon? It depends on the parcel. On a lot with a high or very-high fire-hazard designation that may fall under Chapter 7A, standard untreated wood generally does not meet the code's material standard, and a noncombustible option like fiber cement is usually the appropriate choice. We verify your parcel's designation with Contra Costa County before advising.
How much maintenance does wood siding really need? More than any other cladding. It has to be kept sealed with paint or stain on a regular cycle, or it weathers and can rot — and El Sobrante's damp canyon lots speed that up. If low upkeep is the priority, engineered wood or fiber cement gives a similar look with far less work.
Can I get the wood look without the upkeep or the fire risk? Yes. Fiber cement and James Hardie make profiles that read convincingly as wood while being noncombustible and low-maintenance, and LP SmartSide offers a warm engineered-wood look with better moisture resistance than solid wood — good options on lots where solid wood isn't ideal.
Do I need a permit for wood siding in El Sobrante? Refinishing is exempt, but a full wood re-side generally requires a Contra Costa County building permit, since El Sobrante is unincorporated. We handle the paperwork.
Call (415) 619-5167 or request an estimate. We will look at the home and the lot, tell you honestly whether solid wood or a noncombustible alternative is the right call, and lay out the scope and county permit path.
