Nothing quite matches real wood siding on a home set among Moraga's oaks and wooded ridgelines. Cedar and redwood clapboard, shingle and shake, board-and-batten — natural wood has a depth, a grain, and a way of belonging to a hillside site that no manufactured product fully reproduces. It is also renewable and, unlike most claddings, genuinely repairable board by board. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install natural wood siding — while being straight with you about the two things a Moraga homeowner has to weigh before choosing it: maintenance and fire.

Wood is the highest-maintenance cladding we install, and Moraga's climate does not make it easier. The shaded canyon draws and north walls hold moisture into spring, which is exactly the condition that drives rot at board bottoms, corners, and sills; the hot, dry inland summers then work the finish. Keeping wood healthy means staying ahead of the stain or paint schedule and dealing with pests — this is a cladding you tend, not one you install and forget. For homeowners who love the look but not the upkeep, LP SmartSide engineered wood keeps much of the character with longer paint intervals and far less decay risk, and it is worth comparing before you commit.
This is where a Moraga homeowner has to be honest with themselves. Moraga sits in the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, and the eastern and northeastern hills and parcels backing onto open space fall within the fire hazard severity zones on the updated 2025 Cal Fire maps. Wood is combustible — on a parcel carrying a fire-hazard designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the materials allowed on regulated exterior assemblies, and there natural wood siding is often not the appropriate choice. On those parcels, noncombustible fiber cement is the common answer, and we will say so. Whether Chapter 7A applies to your address depends on the parcel's designation and the scope of work, which we confirm with the Town and the fire district before speccing. On lower, non-designated lots away from the wildland grade, wood remains a legitimate and beautiful choice — the parcel is what decides it.
Where wood is the right call, the install details are what determine its lifespan. We re-side by removing the old cladding to the sheathing and substrate, inspecting and renewing the water-resistive barrier and flashing, and detailing the wood with proper back-priming, gapping, fastening, and flashing at every transition so water sheds instead of sitting. Framing behind the sheathing is only involved if the sheathing itself has rotted. Permits run through the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development, with Town Planning or Engineering sign-off on most exterior work; we coordinate it.
Species and grade (clear cedar or redwood costs more than knotty), profile, the number of stories and elevations, the finish system, substrate repair uncovered at tear-off, and hillside access. Wood generally carries the highest lifetime cost of the materials we install once ongoing maintenance is counted. We price the actual home.
Can I put wood siding on my Moraga hillside home? It depends on the parcel. On a lot with a fire-hazard designation where Chapter 7A can govern regulated assemblies, wood is often not appropriate and noncombustible fiber cement is the sensible choice. On non-designated lots away from the wildland edge, wood is a legitimate option. We confirm your parcel's designation and scope with the Town and the Moraga-Orinda Fire District before recommending.
How much maintenance does wood really need? More than any other cladding — regular staining or repainting, plus attention to rot at board bottoms and corners and to pests. Moraga's damp shaded walls and hot summers both work against the finish, so staying on schedule matters here.
Is there a lower-maintenance way to get the wood look? Yes — LP SmartSide engineered wood keeps much of the grain and warmth with longer paint intervals and better decay resistance, and fiber cement offers wood-look profiles that are noncombustible. Both are worth comparing against solid wood.
Do I need a permit for a wood re-side in Moraga? Plan on it. Review runs through the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development, with Town Planning or Engineering sign-off on most exterior work. We handle it.
