Nothing else looks quite like real wood siding, and on Chico's older streets it isn't a style choice so much as the home's original language. Cedar and redwood clapboard, shingle and shake, board-and-batten — these are the claddings that give the Victorian, Craftsman, and early-1900s homes near downtown, The Esplanade, and CSU Chico their depth and character. Bay Area Siding Company installs and replaces natural wood siding for homeowners who want the genuine article, and we'll be straight with you about what it asks of you in this climate.

Want the real-wood look done right? Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167.

The case for wood

Wood's appeal is honest and hard to fake: real depth of grain, crisp shadow lines, and the ability to be repaired board by board rather than replaced in sheets. It's a renewable material, it can be stained or painted to almost any look, and on a period Chico home it keeps the architecture true in a way engineered lookalikes approach but don't equal. Cedar and redwood in particular are naturally more rot- and insect-resistant than commodity lumber, which is why they've been the traditional siding woods.

For a homeowner restoring a downtown-era home — matching an existing lap profile, replacing failed shingle courses, keeping decorative trim and cornice detail — wood is often the only material that does the job authentically. That's where it shines.

The honest trade-offs in Chico

Wood is a premium material with premium demands, and the northern Sacramento Valley amplifies them:

  • Maintenance is the big one. Wood needs paint or stain, and it needs it maintained. Chico's high-UV summers over 100°F are hard on finishes, and once the coating fails, the wood beneath is exposed to the wet winter. Realistically that means a repaint or re-stain cycle you'll need to keep up with — the price of the look. Neglected wood in this climate cups, cracks, and rots.
  • Rot and pests. Even cedar and redwood aren't immune. Ground contact, splashback near grade, and unmaintained finish all open the door to decay and insect damage over time.
  • Combustibility. This is the one to think hard about by location. Wood is combustible, and while most of Chico's flat valley floor is not treated as a high fire-hazard area, the city's eastern edge climbs toward the foothills along upper Bidwell Park, and hazard designations there can differ. On a parcel in that zone, a combustible wood cladding may not be the appropriate — or code-compliant — choice, and we'd walk you through noncombustible fiber cement, which can be milled and finished to read convincingly as wood. We confirm any parcel's designation with the City and Cal Fire before speccing, rather than assuming.

None of this is a reason to avoid wood on the right house. It's the information you need to choose it with eyes open.

If you love the look but not the upkeep

Plenty of Chico homeowners want a wood aesthetic without the maintenance ledger. Two routes get you close:

  • LP SmartSide — engineered wood with real embossed grain, far more durable than solid boards, still paintable (and still combustible)
  • Fiber cement — cement-based, noncombustible, with wood-grain-textured options that hold their finish through valley UV; the choice for foothill-edge parcels

We install both, and we'll compare them honestly against real wood for your home.

Install, restoration, permits, and cost

Whether we're re-siding in wood or restoring existing wood siding, the fundamentals hold: remove failing cladding to the sheathing/substrate so the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing can be inspected and renewed, repair concealed damage, and install or reinstate the wood to a sound, properly flashed wall. On restoration jobs we can match profile, reveal, and trim to keep a period home consistent. Re-siding is permitted work in Chico through the City of Chico Building Division in the Community Development Department via its online portal; we confirm requirements and pull the permit.

Wood is generally the higher-cost material, and cost moves with the species and grade, the profile and detail, how much substrate or trim repair surfaces at tear-off, the home's size and height, and access. We measure and quote.

FAQ

Is wood siding a good idea in Chico's heat? On the right home and with an owner willing to maintain the finish, yes — especially for period homes near downtown where authenticity matters. Just go in knowing the repaint/re-stain cycle is real and that high UV shortens it. If you want the look without the upkeep, we'll show you engineered wood or fiber cement.

Can you match the wood siding on my older Chico home? Yes. On restoration work near downtown, The Esplanade, and the CSU area we match lap or shingle profile, reveal, and trim so the repair or re-side stays true to the home's character.

Is wood siding allowed near the Chico foothills? It depends on the parcel. Most of the flat valley floor isn't a high fire-hazard area, but parcels on the eastern foothill edge near upper Bidwell Park can carry designations where combustible cladding isn't appropriate. We confirm with the City and Cal Fire and recommend fiber cement where wood isn't the right call.

Do I need a permit for wood siding in Chico? Yes. Re-siding runs through the City of Chico Building Division; we handle the permitting.
