Nothing else looks quite like real wood on a house. Cedar and redwood clapboard, hand-split shakes and shingles, board-and-batten — natural wood siding has a depth of grain and a way of aging that no manufactured product fully imitates. For the Brentwood homeowner drawn to that look, whether restoring an older home near the historic downtown or giving a newer house genuine character, wood is a legitimate and beautiful choice. It also asks more of you than any other material, and part of our job at Bay Area Siding Company — a Larkspur-based (Marin) siding and window contractor serving Brentwood and far-eastern Contra Costa — is making sure you go in with clear eyes.

The case for wood — and the honest cost of it

Wood's strengths are real. It's a renewable, natural material; it takes stain or paint in a way that shows off the grain; and unlike most alternatives, it's genuinely repairable board by board rather than panel by panel. A well-maintained wood exterior has a warmth and authenticity that carries a certain kind of home beautifully.

The trade-offs are equally real, and Brentwood's climate shapes them:

  • Maintenance is the highest of any material. Wood needs regular refinishing — repainting or restaining on a cycle — to stay protected. Brentwood's long, dry summers behind Mount Diablo bring intense UV that breaks paint down, and the wet winter months plus everyday sprinkler splashback drive moisture into any unsealed spot. Wood that's kept up looks superb; wood that's neglected fails.
  • Rot and pests. Natural wood can rot where water sits and is vulnerable to insects — a maintenance vigilance issue more than a dealbreaker in this dry inland climate, but a real one.
  • Combustibility. This is the one that can override preference entirely, covered below.

If the wood look draws you but the upkeep worries you, it's worth comparing against LP SmartSide engineered wood, which mimics the texture with far less maintenance risk, and against fiber cement, which offers wood-look profiles that are noncombustible and fade-resistant. We install all three and will lay them side by side.

The fire-zone question comes first for some parcels

Because natural wood is combustible, siting can decide this before aesthetics do. The good news for most of Brentwood: the city's residential heart sits on the flat Delta plain, and the large majority of subdivisions are not in a designated fire-hazard zone — so on a typical flatland lot, wood is a maintenance decision, not a fire-code prohibition.

But a limited number of parcels near the city's open-space edges fall within Cal Fire's 2025 mapped very high fire hazard severity areas. On those lots, California Building Code Chapter 7A governs the exterior wall assembly and materials at specific openings and assemblies, and combustible wood cladding is generally the wrong choice — fiber cement is the noncombustible route there. We check your parcel's designation during scoping before recommending wood, so this is settled up front rather than at plan check.

Profiles and the look you're after

Wood siding isn't one look. Horizontal clapboard (bevel/lap) reads traditional and classic. Shakes and shingles give a textured, cottage or Craftsman character, often used on gables and upper stories. Board-and-batten — wide vertical boards with narrow battens over the seams — suits farmhouse and rustic elevations, a nod to the agricultural roots of this part of the county. Species matters too: cedar and redwood are the common choices for their natural decay resistance and how they take finish. We'll help you match profile, species, and finish to your home's architecture — and, where relevant, to your HOA's approved palette, since much of Brentwood's subdivision housing carries one. Bring that list to the consultation.

Installation and what's behind the boards

Wood siding rewards careful installation and a sound wall behind it. We remove the old cladding to the sheathing/substrate, confirm the water-resistive barrier (WRB) is intact, and correct flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations before any new boards go up — critical with wood, because trapped moisture is what starts rot. We back-prime and detail the wood to the manufacturer's and species' best practice, install it, and finish with paint or stain, trim, cleanup, and a walkthrough. Re-siding is permitted work; the City of Brentwood Building Inspection Division (Community Development Department) administers the permit and enforces the California Building and Energy codes, and we pull and manage it.

What drives the price

Wood is a premium material, and we quote after seeing the walls. The drivers are square footage and stories, the species and profile you choose, whether you finish with paint or stain, how much substrate or flashing repair surfaces at tear-off, and the trim and window integration. It's also worth planning for the ongoing refinishing cost as part of the true cost of ownership — we'll be candid about that so the maintenance cycle isn't a surprise.

FAQ

Is wood siding practical in Brentwood's climate? It can be, with commitment to upkeep. The dry inland Delta climate is actually kinder to wood than the damp coast, but the intense summer UV is hard on the finish — so the refinishing cycle is non-negotiable. Kept up, wood does well here; neglected, it fails faster than manufactured materials.

Can I put wood siding on a home near the Brentwood hills or open space? Only after a parcel check. On the limited lots within Cal Fire's mapped fire-hazard areas near the city's edges, Chapter 7A generally rules out combustible wood cladding in favor of noncombustible fiber cement. Most flatland subdivisions aren't affected, but we confirm your parcel's designation before recommending wood.

How often will I need to repaint or restain wood siding? It varies by exposure, finish, and species, but wood needs refinishing on a regular cycle — sooner on the sun-struck south and west walls where Brentwood's UV is harshest. We'll set realistic expectations for your specific home during the consultation.

What if I love the wood look but not the maintenance? Look at LP SmartSide engineered wood, which delivers a warm wood texture with far less rot and refinishing risk, or fiber cement with wood-look profiles, which is noncombustible and fade-resistant. We install both and will compare them against real wood for you.
