There are Los Altos homes where nothing but real wood is right — a period-correct ranch, a shingled cottage, a custom home whose whole design rests on the depth and warmth of natural cladding. Bay Area Siding Company installs authentic wood siding in Los Altos: cedar and redwood clapboard, shingle and shake, and board-and-batten. We also believe in telling you the truth about it, because wood is the most beautiful and the most demanding material on the menu, and on a home this considered, going in with clear eyes is the whole game.

Want the real-wood look done right? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

What real wood gives you

Nothing imitates it perfectly, and that's the point:

  • Genuine depth and warmth. Real grain, real shadow lines, and a finish that can be stained to glow or painted crisp — the natural material reads differently than any engineered look, and on the right home it's worth the difference.
  • Repairable and renewable. A damaged board can be replaced individually, and the material is renewable. A wood exterior can be refreshed and re-finished rather than replaced wholesale.
  • Period authenticity. On a restoration or a design chasing a specific era, wood is often the only cladding that's actually correct — the right clapboard exposure or shingle coursing that a substitute can't quite hit.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

Wood asks for commitment, and two things matter especially here.

Maintenance. Wood must be kept painted or stained, and it's vulnerable to rot and insects if the finish lapses. That calendar is heavier in Los Altos than in a dry, sunny town: a lot of the city sits under a mature tree canopy, and the north and east faces of many homes stay damp and slow to dry, which is exactly where an aging finish lets moisture in and rot begins. If you choose wood, you're signing up for a real re-finish schedule — most honestly on the shaded elevations.

Combustibility. Wood burns, and that's a genuine consideration for parcels along the western foothill edge. Most of Los Altos sits on the flat valley floor and is not within a mapped high fire-hazard severity zone, so for the majority of homes here fire code isn't the driver. But mapped zones concentrate in the western foothills near Los Altos Hills, and designation is parcel-specific — where a home carries a fire-hazard designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can steer exterior wall coverings toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies, which points away from solid wood. On such a parcel, fiber cement is the noncombustible alternative that keeps much of the look. We confirm your address's status with the City before speccing wood rather than assume it.

If you love wood but want less upkeep

There's a middle path worth knowing about. LP SmartSide engineered wood gives a real wood texture with more resistance to rot and impact and easier handling, at a lower maintenance burden — though it's still a painted product. And fiber cement offers wood-look profiles with no repainting and noncombustibility. If authenticity is non-negotiable, solid wood is still the answer; if you're wood-curious but maintenance-wary, compare those before committing. The Los Altos siding replacement overview and the James Hardie, CertainTeed, and vinyl pages round out the field. See the project gallery and the South Bay service area.

Installing wood so it lasts

Wood's longevity is almost entirely in the detailing. The old cladding comes off to the sheathing so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected and rebuilt; the new wood goes on with back-priming or all-sides finishing where called for, sealed cut ends, correct clearances at grade and roof lines, and flashing that keeps water out of end grain and joints. On shaded, slow-drying walls, those details — plus a finish schedule you'll actually keep — are the difference between wood that ages gracefully and wood that fails at the base.

Permits, trees, and cost

Re-siding is permitted through the City of Los Altos Building Division, with a Title 24 component possible depending on scope — we handle the submittal. The city protects its trees under Municipal Code Chapter 11.08, and since wood is often chosen on tree-shaded lots, we plan access and staging around canopies and root zones you're keeping. Cost turns on the species and grade (clear cedar and redwood run higher), the profile (clapboard, shingle, board-and-batten), factory versus field finishing, access and tree staging, and whatever concealed rot tear-off reveals. We quote after measuring.

FAQ

Is wood siding a bad idea in Los Altos because of the trees and damp? Not bad — demanding. The shaded, slow-drying walls under the canopy mean the finish schedule matters more, and the details at the base and trim have to be right. Wood done and maintained properly performs; wood neglected on a damp north wall fails. We'll tell you honestly which elevations need the most attention.

Can I use wood if my home is near the foothills? It depends on your parcel. Most of Los Altos isn't in a mapped fire-hazard zone, but parcels near the western foothill edge can be, and a fire-hazard designation can steer the exterior toward noncombustible assemblies under Chapter 7A. Designation is parcel-specific, so we confirm your address with the City before speccing wood — and offer fiber cement as the noncombustible alternative where it applies.

What's the lowest-maintenance way to get a wood look? Fiber cement wood-look profiles need no repainting and are noncombustible; LP SmartSide engineered wood gives a real texture with less vulnerability than solid wood, though it still needs paint. If only authentic wood will do, we install it — with clear guidance on the upkeep.

Do I need a permit for wood siding in Los Altos? Yes. The work is submitted to the City of Los Altos Building Division, with a Title 24 form possible depending on scope. We pull the permit and handle the paperwork.
