Nothing quite matches the look of real wood, and on a custom Blackhawk home that's often exactly the point. Cedar and redwood clapboard, hand-split shakes, tight-grain shingles, board-and-batten — natural wood has a depth, warmth, and repairability that engineered and cement products imitate but don't fully replicate. It's also a renewable, time-honored material that suits the architectural character of a lot of estate homes here. But wood asks the most of an owner in return, and on the Mount Diablo hillside it carries a fire consideration you can't wave off. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install real wood siding — and we'll be candid with you about what it takes to keep it right and where it isn't the smart choice.

Set on the look of real wood? Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167.

What real wood gives you

The reasons to choose wood are genuine. The material has a natural grain and dimensionality that reads as authentic from the street, and it takes stain or paint in a way that lets you tune the exact tone you want. Cedar and redwood are naturally more decay- and insect-resistant than many species, which is why they've long been the West Coast standards for siding. Wood is also repairable board by board — a damaged section can be replaced and blended rather than requiring a wholesale redo — and it's renewable. For a homeowner who values authentic material and craftsmanship, and who's clear-eyed about upkeep, nothing else feels quite the same.

Species and profiles

The wood conversation usually starts with species and profile:

  • Cedar — the most common siding wood, prized for stability, natural resistance, and how well it takes finish; available in clapboard, shingle, and shake.
  • Redwood — a classic Northern California choice, valued for its grain and durability.
  • Profiles — horizontal clapboard/bevel for a traditional look, shingle and shake for texture, and vertical board-and-batten for a more rustic or agrarian character.

We'll match a species, grade, and profile to the architecture and to an approved palette.

The maintenance reality

Here's the honest part. Wood is the highest-maintenance cladding we install. To stay protected it needs to be kept sealed, stained, or painted on a regular cycle — and if that cycle slips, wood is vulnerable to moisture intrusion, rot, checking, and insects in a way fiber cement and engineered wood are not. On the foothills' hot-summer, wet-winter pattern, staying ahead of finish maintenance is what determines whether a wood wall looks stunning at fifteen years or tired at eight. If you love wood and will maintain it, that's a fair trade. If you love the look but not the upkeep, LP SmartSide engineered wood or a wood-textured fiber cement profile gets you most of the way there with far less work — worth comparing honestly before you commit.

The fire consideration — this one matters here

Wood is combustible, and that's not an abstract point in Blackhawk. The community sits against the slopes of Mount Diablo, the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District has flagged it among higher-risk areas for wildfire, and some parcels carry a fire-hazard designation. Where California Building Code Chapter 7A applies to regulated exterior assemblies on a designated parcel, a combustible cladding like natural wood may not be permitted on those specific elements — noncombustible fiber cement is often required there instead. Whether Chapter 7A applies to your home depends on your particular parcel and the scope of work, which we confirm with Contra Costa County before speccing. If your lot backs to open space or state parkland, this is the first thing to sort out; it can mean using fiber cement on regulated portions even if wood is used elsewhere, or reconsidering wood altogether. We won't spec wood where the code calls for a noncombustible assembly.

Architectural review

Blackhawk reviews changes to a home's exterior appearance, so the wood species, profile, and finish color generally go through the association's architectural-review process before work begins. Wood's authentic look is frequently welcomed by committees protecting a community's character, but the specifics still need approval, and — as above — the association's rules interact with the fire-material requirements on some parcels. Confirm your association's requirements early; we prepare the submittal and plan around the review.

Permits, tear-off, and installation

Blackhawk is unincorporated, so the building permit is issued by Contra Costa County's Building Inspection Division — we prepare and pull it. On tear-off we remove the old cladding, inspect the sheathing and substrate, confirm a sound water-resistive barrier (WRB), and correct flashing at openings and transitions before the wood goes on. With wood especially, correct detailing — back-priming, proper gapping, sealed end grain, and careful flashing — is what buys you the longest life between finish cycles. Framing is only exposed if the sheathing itself must be removed, a larger scope we'd flag.

What drives the cost

We don't post prices. With wood the drivers are species and grade, the profile and finish, the home's size and detail, hillside access and staging, what tear-off reveals, any fire-assembly detailing a designated parcel requires on regulated elements, and the HOA and county timelines. Premium species and heavy detail put wood at the upper end of the material range, and its lifetime maintenance cost is real — we factor both into the conversation. We scope it after measuring.

Compare the alternatives

If the look of wood is what you're after, it's worth weighing the trade-offs against the substitutes before you decide. Compare LP SmartSide, fiber cement, and CertainTeed's lines, or start at the siding hub and the Blackhawk siding replacement overview. Doing windows too? See Blackhawk window replacement. FAQ

Can I put wood siding on my Blackhawk home? Often, yes — but it depends on your parcel. Wood is combustible, so where Chapter 7A applies to regulated assemblies on a fire-hazard parcel, a noncombustible cladding may be required on those elements. We confirm your parcel's situation with Contra Costa County before speccing and won't put wood where the code calls for otherwise.

How much maintenance does wood siding really need? It's the highest-maintenance cladding we install — regular sealing, staining, or repainting on a cycle to protect it from moisture, rot, and insects. Kept up, it lasts and looks superb; neglected, it declines faster than fiber cement or engineered wood.

Is cedar or redwood better? Both are strong West Coast choices with natural decay resistance. Cedar is the most common and takes finish beautifully; redwood is a classic Northern California option prized for its grain. We'll match the species and grade to your design and budget.

What if I want the wood look with less upkeep? Then LP SmartSide engineered wood or a wood-textured fiber cement profile is worth a serious look — both deliver much of the appearance with far less maintenance, and fiber cement adds noncombustibility for fire-zone parcels.
