Some homeowners want a house that looks and feels built, not manufactured. Real cedar or redwood gives you grain, depth, and a surface you can sand, patch, and refinish for decades. It also asks more of you than any other cladding we install. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working throughout the South Bay. We install natural wood siding on Santa Clara homes and help owners decide whether wood is the right fit or whether an alternative would serve them better.

Weighing real wood for your house? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167. We'll look at the walls, the exposure, and your tolerance for upkeep before recommending anything.

Who chooses wood in Santa Clara, and why

Much of Santa Clara went up during the 1950s and 60s building boom. The typical result is a single-story ranch or tract home, and many of those houses still wear their original T1-11 plywood panels, hardboard, or early lap siding. When that material fails, owners generally go one of three ways:

  • They want the authentic version of what the house was meant to look like. Cedar board-and-batten, or wide lap boards running the long horizontal lines of a ranch, gives a mid-century house the character the original budget materials only imitated.
  • They're renovating toward a warmer, more natural exterior. Stained cedar shingles or clear-finished lap siding can shift a plain tract elevation toward something more custom.
  • They value repairability. A damaged wood board can be cut out and replaced with a matching piece, and the whole wall can be refinished rather than replaced.

If what you like is the look of wood rather than the material itself, read our pages on LP SmartSide engineered wood and fiber cement before you decide. Both reproduce wood texture with less maintenance. Real wood is worth it when you actually want real wood.

Profiles that suit a valley-floor ranch

The profile matters as much as the species, and a few options suit Santa Clara's housing stock well:

  • Bevel or clapboard lap siding reinforces the low, horizontal feel of a ranch. Wider exposures tend to read as more mid-century than narrow ones.
  • Board-and-batten gives a vertical rhythm. It works on gable ends, accent walls, or a full elevation. It's also a common direct upgrade when owners replace vertical-grooved T1-11 but want to keep a similar vertical look.
  • Shingles and shakes add texture. They're used on full walls or as an accent, and they take stain beautifully.
  • Tongue-and-groove and channel profiles create a cleaner, more modern face on remodeled or updated mid-century homes.

We'll help you choose a profile that respects the house's proportions. A ranch with a long, low roofline can look awkward in a profile that fights it.

Sun, finish, and the honest maintenance picture

Santa Clara summers are long, dry, and bright. Unprotected wood grays and checks under sun, and ultraviolet exposure is what breaks down most paints and stains over time. So in this climate, the finish schedule is the real cost of owning wood siding. It isn't the fog or salt air that affects wood on the coast.

What that means in practice:

  • South- and west-facing walls take the most sun and will usually need refinishing sooner than shaded north walls. Plan on inspecting those elevations regularly rather than on a fixed calendar.
  • Opaque paint or solid stain generally protects the wood longest. Semi-transparent stains and clear finishes show off the grain but need more frequent renewal.
  • Winter rain still matters. Wood near grade, at the bottoms of boards, and around window sills is where moisture problems start. Proper clearance and flashing prevent most of them.

The trade-off is plain: wood gives you the most natural exterior and the most repairable one, and it requires the most attention. You should go in expecting that.

How we install wood so it lasts

Most early failures in a wood exterior come from the installation, not the lumber. When we're replacing old cladding, the tear-off removes it to the sheathing or substrate. That lets us inspect the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing around windows, doors, and penetrations. On homes of this era, those layers are often missing, deteriorated, or not detailed the way current practice expects. We repair soft sheathing where we find it, and we install a continuous WRB and a correct flashing sequence before any wood goes up. Framing only comes into play if the sheathing itself has to come off. That's a larger scope, and we'd flag it with you first.

From there, the details that protect wood include:

  • Priming or sealing boards on all faces and on every field cut, not just the exposed side
  • Corrosion-resistant fasteners suited to the species (cedar and redwood can stain around the wrong nails)
  • Adequate clearance between the siding and soil, paving, or roof surfaces
  • Careful joints and caulking at trim and openings
  • Allowing for the natural movement of wood as it expands and contracts

If you're also replacing windows, doing both at once lets the window flashing tie correctly into the new WRB. See our Santa Clara window replacement page.

Permits and fire-zone questions

Re-siding is permitted work in this city. It goes through the City of Santa Clara Building Division, which handles permits for residential alterations and repairs. We pull the permit and confirm with the Division whether your scope can take a simpler over-the-counter path or needs fuller review.

Wood is combustible, which is a serious consideration in wildfire-prone areas. The developed valley floor where most of Santa Clara sits is not within a mapped fire hazard severity zone, unlike foothill parcels elsewhere in the county. Because of that, the noncombustible-cladding rules under California's Chapter 7A generally aren't the deciding factor here. Those requirements depend on the parcel and the specific assemblies involved, so we confirm your property's status with the authority having jurisdiction before we spec wood. If fire resistance is a priority for you anyway, James Hardie fiber cement in Santa Clara is the natural comparison.

Wood vs. the alternatives

| If you want… | Consider | |---|---| | Authentic grain, repairability, natural character | Cedar or redwood wood siding | | Wood texture with less repainting and more impact resistance | LP SmartSide | | Noncombustible, very dimensionally stable, holds paint well | Fiber cement / James Hardie | | Lowest upkeep and lower budget | Vinyl |

What drives the cost of wood siding

We price after a walkthrough, not online. The main factors are:

  • Species and grade. Clear, knot-free cedar and redwood cost more than knotty grades.
  • Profile. Shingles and board-and-batten involve more labor than standard lap.
  • Finish. You can order factory pre-finishing or have the boards finished on site.
  • House size. This includes the number of wall planes, corners, and openings.
  • Hidden repairs. Sheathing, WRB, or flashing repairs may turn up after tear-off.
  • Combined work. Trim or windows may be handled in the same project.

Wood also carries a long-term cost that other claddings don't: periodic refinishing, so budget for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does wood siding hold up to Santa Clara's summer sun? It does when it's finished and maintained. Sun and UV break down coatings over time, especially on south- and west-facing walls. A good opaque paint or solid stain protects longest, and regular inspection of the sunniest walls catches wear before the wood itself degrades.

Can I use wood siding on my Santa Clara home given fire codes? On most of Santa Clara's valley floor, which isn't in a mapped fire hazard severity zone, wildfire-driven cladding restrictions generally don't rule wood out. Requirements depend on the parcel and the specific assemblies involved, so we confirm with the City of Santa Clara Building Division before finalizing materials.

I have failing T1-11. Should I replace it with real wood? You can. Cedar board-and-batten is a popular way to keep a vertical look with better material. If you'd rather not repaint as often, LP SmartSide or fiber cement are worth comparing. We'll walk you through all three at the house.

Is wood siding repairable, or does the whole wall need replacing? Individual boards or shingles can usually be cut out and replaced, then finished to blend in. That repairability is one of wood's real advantages.
