Nothing else looks quite like real wood on a foothill home. Cedar and redwood have a depth, a grain, and a way of aging that engineered and synthetic materials imitate but never fully reach. On a farmhouse or a cabin in the country around Camino and Pollock Pines, natural wood siding can be exactly right. It is also the material that asks the most of you and raises the most questions in fire country — so this page is as much about the honest conditions as it is about the beauty.

Bay Area Siding Company installs and replaces wood siding across Northern California and up into the El Dorado County foothills. We will tell you frankly where wood is the right choice and where it is not.

Considering real wood? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

The wood profiles we install

Natural wood siding is a family of looks, not one product:

  • Clapboard / bevel lap — the classic horizontal board, cedar or redwood, that reads as traditional farmhouse.
  • Shingle and shake — coursed cedar shingles or hand-split shakes, a natural fit for cabins and rustic homes.
  • Board-and-batten — vertical boards with narrow battens over the seams; a farmhouse and barn-style staple that suits many foothill homes.

Cedar and redwood are the go-to species because their natural oils give them better rot and insect resistance than most woods — though "better" is not "immune," which is the theme of everything below.

The honest trade-offs

Wood's appeal is real, and so are its costs. We lay these out first, because they should drive the decision:

  • It is the highest-maintenance cladding we install. Wood must be sealed, stained, or painted, and re-done on a cycle. In the Apple Hill climate — wet winters, then long, high-UV summers — the finish takes a beating, and skipping the upkeep leads to rot, cupping, splitting, and pest entry.
  • It is combustible. This is the decisive issue for many foothill parcels. Solid wood is the opposite of a noncombustible cladding, and in a designated fire hazard zone that is a serious consideration for the wall covering.
  • It is a premium material. Real cedar and redwood, correctly installed and finished, sit at the higher end on both material and labor.

In its favor: wood is renewable, individual boards are repairable, and a well-kept wood house has a character and resale appeal that is hard to match.

The fire-zone reality — read this before you commit

This is where wood siding in the Apple Hill area needs a clear-eyed conversation. Much of the area sits in the State Responsibility Area, with Cal Fire hazard designations that reach very high on many parcels. California Building Code Chapter 7A governs the wall covering on designated parcels and favors noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies. Solid wood is combustible, so on a designated parcel it may not be permitted for the wall covering, or may require specific ignition-resistant treatment and detailing to qualify.

We do not gloss over this. We check your parcel's designation with El Dorado County and confirm whether Chapter 7A applies to your scope before specifying anything. If your parcel is in a hazard zone and the code drives it, we will be straight with you: fiber cement delivers a comparable clapboard or shingle look while being noncombustible, and LP SmartSide offers a warm engineered-wood texture with more resilience. Where a parcel genuinely allows solid wood, we install it properly. Applicability is parcel- and scope-specific, never a blanket rule.

Installing wood so it lasts

Wood rewards careful work more than any other cladding. A full tear-off takes the old material to the sheathing and substrate so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected and renewed — not down to the studs, unless the sheathing itself has failed, which we would flag as a larger scope. From there, the details are everything: correct back-priming and end-sealing, proper fastening that lets the wood move, tight flashing at every opening, and a good first finish. Wood that is installed and sealed correctly can last for decades; wood that is rushed starts failing in a few seasons.

Cost drivers

Wood sits at the premium end, and the number depends on species and profile, the finish system, home size and stories, concealed repair found at tear-off, trim and window integration, rural site access, and any fire-zone treatment your parcel requires. And remember the ongoing cost: budget for the re-finishing cycle, not just the install. We price the install after a walkthrough.

Weigh the alternatives

If the upkeep or the fire-zone limit gives you second thoughts, the wood-look alternatives are genuinely good: fiber cement for a noncombustible, low-maintenance clapboard or shingle, LP SmartSide for engineered wood with real grain, and the CertainTeed lineup for shake-look options. The siding replacement overview and the Apple Hill siding page compare them. For windows, see window replacement in Apple Hill; for the area, the Sierra region; and for finished jobs, the project gallery.

FAQ

Can I put real wood siding on my home in a fire hazard zone? Maybe, but not automatically. Solid wood is combustible, and on a designated parcel where Chapter 7A applies, it may not be allowed for the wall covering or may need specific ignition-resistant treatment. We confirm your parcel's designation and scope with El Dorado County and advise honestly.

How often will wood siding need refinishing? On a cycle — the exact interval depends on the finish, exposure, and the foothill sun and wet winters. Wood is the highest-maintenance cladding we install; if you are not prepared for the re-finishing rhythm, a wood-look alternative may serve you better.

Which lasts longer, wood or fiber cement? Fiber cement generally lasts longer with less upkeep and does not burn. Wood can last decades if it is kept sealed and maintained, and it offers a natural look and repairability that some owners prefer. It is a genuine trade-off, which we walk through.

Do I need a permit for wood siding in the Apple Hill area? A full re-side generally requires a building permit through El Dorado County Building Services; siding is not permit-exempt. Fire-zone WUI provisions may also apply. We confirm your parcel's requirements.
