Nothing else looks quite like real wood on a house, and in a town like Lakeport — with its downtown of Victorian and early-1900s lakeside homes — there's a genuine case for keeping or restoring it. Cedar and redwood clapboard, shingle and shake courses, board-and-batten: these are the profiles the older streets were built with, and a well-maintained wood exterior has a depth of grain and a way of taking light that no manufactured product fully imitates. It's also a renewable material, and, unlike most alternatives, it's repairable board by board.

We install and restore wood siding. We also believe you deserve a clear-eyed account of what it asks of you over the years, because in this particular climate and this particular county, the trade-offs are real.

The case for real wood in Lakeport

On a historic downtown home, authenticity has value — architectural, and often practical if the property sits in a context where character matters to the street and to resale. Wood lets you match original lap widths, corner details, and trim profiles exactly, and it can be repaired in place rather than replaced wholesale when a section is damaged. For an owner restoring a period Lakeport house, or building new and wanting the warmth of natural material, wood remains a legitimate premium choice.

Species matters. Cedar and redwood are the traditional choices here for good reason — both have natural resistance to decay and insects that plain softwoods lack, which buys you a margin in a climate that cycles between hard summer sun and wet winters.

The two honest caveats: maintenance and fire

This is where we'd rather be straight with you than make a sale you regret.

Maintenance. Wood is the highest-upkeep material we install. It has to be kept sealed and finished — paint or stain on a regular cycle — or it will weather, check, cup, and eventually rot, especially at the base of walls and around openings where water collects. Lakeport's intense summer UV is hard on finishes, so the repaint cycle here is not generous. If a low-maintenance wall is your priority, fiber cement or LP SmartSide give you a wood look with far less ongoing work, and we'll say so.

Fire. This is the bigger one in Lake County. Wood is combustible, and the county's fire record is recent and serious — the 2015 Valley Fire, and the 2018 Ranch Fire (the larger half of the record Mendocino Complex) that pushed toward Clear Lake and forced mandatory evacuations in Lakeport. Cal Fire's updated mapping has expanded High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone coverage across the county, and some Lakeport-area parcels fall inside those zones. Where a parcel is designated, California Building Code Chapter 7A can require noncombustible or tested ignition-resistant wall assemblies for the regulated portions of the work — and ordinary wood siding generally won't satisfy that. Whether the requirement reaches your project depends on your parcel's mapped designation and the scope, which we confirm with the City of Lakeport Building Division (or Lake County for unincorporated parcels) before recommending a material.

The practical upshot: on a parcel with no fire-assembly requirement, wood is a real option if you're committed to the upkeep. On a designated parcel, we'll be candid that fiber cement is the safer fit for the regulated areas — and it can be detailed to closely echo the wood profiles you're after.

Restoration vs. full replacement

Not every tired wood wall needs to come off. Part of the walkthrough is deciding honestly between:

  • Spot repair and refinish — replacing damaged boards, treating the wall, and refinishing, where the bulk of the siding is sound. Wood's repairability is one of its genuine advantages.
  • Full replacement — where rot, past water intrusion, or widespread failure means the wall should come down and be rebuilt. We remove the old cladding to the sheathing and the water-resistive barrier — not the framing, unless we find damage that calls for more — correct the WRB and flashing, and install new material to spec.

Cost drivers

We don't post prices. Wood generally sits at the premium end of the materials we install, and beyond material the number turns on species and profile, the extent of any rot or substrate repair found at tear-off, the finish program, whether a fire-zone assembly applies to your parcel, and access on hillside or lakefront lots. The long-term cost also includes the repaint cycle, which we'll factor into an honest comparison. A walkthrough gives you a real figure.

FAQ

Is wood siding allowed on a Lakeport fire-zone parcel? Often not for the regulated areas. Wood is combustible; where Chapter 7A applies to a designated parcel, those areas generally need noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies. We confirm your parcel's status with the City of Lakeport Building Division or Lake County before recommending it.

How often will I need to refinish wood siding here? More often than you might hope — Lakeport's summer UV is hard on paint and stain. The exact cycle depends on exposure and finish, but plan on regular maintenance; it's the price of the look.

Can I keep the original wood look on my historic downtown home? Yes, if the parcel allows it and you'll maintain it. Wood matches historic profiles exactly and can be repaired in place. Where fire code rules it out, fiber cement can be detailed to closely echo the same profiles.

Should I repair my existing wood siding or replace it? If most of the wall is sound, spot repair and refinishing is often the smart, economical path — one of wood's real advantages. Widespread rot or water damage points to full replacement. We assess and tell you which.
