Nothing quite replaces real wood on the right Orinda home. Cedar and redwood clapboard, shingle and shake, board-and-batten — natural wood gives a depth of grain and a way of weathering that no manufactured product fully imitates, and on this town's storybook cottages, shingled canyon houses, and custom homes it can be the material that makes the whole exterior sing. Bay Area Siding Company, a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, installs natural wood siding in Orinda — and we'll be straight with you about what it asks in return, because wood is the highest-maintenance and, on a wooded fire-mapped lot, the most fire-sensitive choice you can make.

Why owners still choose wood

The case for natural wood is real and worth stating clearly:

  • A look nothing else matches — genuine grain, natural color variation, and the way cedar or redwood ages. On a period or architect-designed Orinda home, that authenticity carries weight.
  • A renewable, repairable material — individual boards or shingles can be replaced, and the finish renewed, over a long service life.
  • Range — clapboard, shingle, shake, and board-and-batten each give a distinct character, from crisp to rustic.
  • The right choice for a true restoration — where a historic or architecturally significant Orinda home should keep the exact material it was designed with.

The two honest trade-offs

Wood earns its beauty at a price, and in Orinda the price shows up in two specific ways.

Maintenance. Wood is the most demanding cladding there is. It needs regular painting or staining to hold off rot, and it's vulnerable to moisture and pests. Orinda's shaded, damp canyon elevations are exactly the conditions that push a poorly maintained wood wall toward rot, while the hot, sun-heavy summers break down finishes on the south and west faces. Kept up, wood lasts a very long time; neglected, it fails faster here than in a drier, sunnier flatland.

Fire. This is the one that has to be handled honestly. Orinda is heavily wooded and hilly, and a large portion — north Orinda in particular — sits in state-mapped Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone terrain served by the Moraga-Orinda Fire District. Natural wood is combustible. Where a parcel carries a Very High designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A governs the exterior wall assembly and generally calls for noncombustible or tested ignition-resistant materials — which ordinary wood siding is not. The nuance that matters: 7A applies to specific assemblies and openings on designated parcels, not blanket to every home or every repair, and whether it reaches your project depends on your parcel's mapping and the scope of work. On a designated fire-zone lot, bare wood may not be a permitted option, and we'd point you to noncombustible fiber cement — which now comes in convincing wood-grain textures — or discuss whether an ignition-resistant assembly can work. We confirm all of this with the City of Orinda before you commit, rather than assume.

Where wood makes the most sense

Given those trade-offs, wood tends to be the right call on Orinda parcels outside the regulated fire zones, on homes where the owner values the authentic look enough to keep up the maintenance, and on true restorations where the original material matters. If you want the wood look without the upkeep or the fire exposure, two alternatives are worth comparing: LP SmartSide engineered wood keeps a real-wood texture with far less maintenance, and fiber cement offers wood-grain profiles that are noncombustible. We'll lay those side by side with solid wood so the choice is made with eyes open.

How the job runs

A wood re-side starts with tear-off. Removing the old cladding exposes the sheathing or substrate, the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and the flashing — the layer that keeps water out, and where Orinda's damp elevations tend to hide rot. We renew the WRB and flashing before installing the new wood, and we prime and finish it properly, including back-priming where appropriate, so it starts its life sealed against the canyon moisture. (Framing only enters the scope if the sheathing itself has failed.) Siding work is permitted through the City of Orinda's Planning and Building Department, and on a visible or significant home the city's design-review process may apply; we handle the permit and confirm what's required.

What drives the cost

Solid wood sits at the premium end, and the drivers are the species and grade (clear cedar or redwood costs more than knotty), the profile, house size and stories, hillside access and staging, the finish program, and what the tear-off uncovers. Wood also carries an ongoing cost the others don't — the repaint or re-stain cycle — which is worth factoring into the real lifetime number. We price the installation after seeing the walls.

FAQ

Can I put wood siding on my Orinda home if it's in a fire zone? Often not in the ordinary way. On a designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone parcel, Chapter 7A generally calls for noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, and bare wood isn't that. Because 7A applies by parcel and scope, we confirm with the City of Orinda first, and where wood isn't permitted we'll show you noncombustible wood-grain fiber cement.

How much maintenance does wood siding really need? The most of any cladding — regular painting or staining to hold off rot and pests, and more attention on Orinda's shaded, damp elevations and its sun-baked south and west faces. Kept up, it lasts a long time; neglected, it fails faster here.

What gives the wood look with less upkeep? LP SmartSide engineered wood keeps a genuine wood texture with far less maintenance, and fiber cement offers noncombustible wood-grain profiles. Both are worth comparing if the maintenance or fire exposure of solid wood gives you pause.

Do you do historic or restoration wood siding? Yes — on a home where the original material matters, we install natural cedar or redwood in the matching profile, properly primed and flashed. Where the parcel's fire mapping complicates that, we confirm the options with the City.
