A lot of Arnold owners want the warm, woodgrain look of a real mountain cabin without signing up for the endless maintenance and rot problems that solid cedar or redwood bring at 4,000 feet. LP SmartSide is the material that most often threads that needle. It's engineered wood — real wood strands bonded and treated through LP's SmartGuard process — so it keeps genuine wood texture and workability while behaving far better against moisture and impact than raw lumber. Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide throughout the Ebbetts Pass corridor, and this page covers what it is, why cabin owners like it, and the one trade-off you have to weigh honestly on a forested lot.

Solid wood siding is beautiful and it's a maintenance treadmill — it drinks moisture, checks and splits in freeze-thaw, feeds rot where snow sits against it, and needs frequent refinishing. LP SmartSide starts from wood but engineers those weaknesses down: the strands are treated with a zinc borate and resin/wax system (SmartGuard) that resists moisture, fungal decay, and termites, and the boards come primed for paint. What you get is a product that still looks and works like wood — you can cut and fasten it with standard carpentry, and it takes paint beautifully — but holds up to a snowy Sierra winter much better than the real thing.
Its practical advantages up here:
This is the honest part. LP SmartSide is a wood-based product, and while the SmartGuard treatment addresses moisture, decay, and pests, it is not a noncombustible cladding the way fiber cement is. Much of Arnold is forested land inside a State Responsibility Area where Cal Fire designates fire-hazard severity zones, and California Building Code Chapter 7A governs exterior wall coverings in designated zones, favoring noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies. On a designated high-hazard parcel, that can rule engineered wood out or require a specific tested assembly. Whether it applies to your lot depends on the parcel designation and the scope of work — we confirm that with the Calaveras County Building Division before speccing, and if your parcel points toward noncombustible cladding we'll tell you and walk you through fiber cement instead. Where fire designation isn't the governing constraint, LP SmartSide is a strong, popular choice.
If you like the idea of engineered wood, it helps to see it against the field. Compared with fiber cement, SmartSide is lighter, warmer, and more impact-tolerant but combustible and it needs periodic repainting. Compared with real wood siding, it delivers a similar look with far less rot risk and maintenance. Compared with vinyl, it looks and feels more premium but costs more and does need paint. For the top-level material decision, the Arnold siding replacement overview puts them side by side.
SmartSide does need periodic repainting — that's the cost of a paintable wood-look product, and high-altitude UV means finishes work harder here than at sea level. But you're repainting a stable, treated board that isn't rotting or splitting underneath, so it's straightforward maintenance rather than the constant patch-and-pray of failing solid wood. Choosing a quality finish and keeping it up is what gets you the long service life the material is capable of.
Arnold is unincorporated, so permitting goes through the Calaveras County Building Division — (209) 754-6390 or the county's online portal. We assess the walls, write the scope, pull the permit, remove the old cladding to the sheathing and substrate so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected and corrected, install the SmartSide to LP's specification with proper gapping and fastening, then prime/paint and finish trim. As with all exterior work up here, it's a dry-season job and we schedule around the snow.
We don't post prices. The drivers: home size and layout, profile and finish, concealed rot or substrate repair uncovered at tear-off, whether your parcel's fire designation requires a specific assembly, and access on a wooded or sloped lot. A walkthrough is how we price it.
Can I use LP SmartSide on a forested parcel in Arnold? It depends on your parcel's fire designation. SmartSide is a treated wood product, not noncombustible, so on a designated high-hazard lot it may not be appropriate and fiber cement may be the better route. We confirm your designation and scope with Calaveras County before recommending it.
How is SmartSide different from regular wood siding? It's engineered from treated wood strands (LP's SmartGuard process) that resist moisture, decay, and termites, so it keeps the wood look but avoids most of the rot and splitting that plague solid wood in a snow climate. It still needs periodic repainting.
Does it really hold up to Sierra winters? The treatment addresses moisture and decay well, and it's more impact-resistant than fiber cement. A correct install and keeping the paint up are what deliver its long service life. Its limit here is fire, not weather.
How often will I need to repaint? Less often than solid wood, but it is a paintable product, so plan on periodic repainting — high-altitude UV is the main driver. We'll recommend a finish suited to the exposure.
Call (415) 619-5167 or request an estimate. We'll check your parcel's fire context, look at the walls, and tell you honestly whether SmartSide or a noncombustible option fits your lot.
