There is a particular look that suits a home in the pines and orchards above Placerville — the grain and shadow line of real wood. The problem has always been that solid wood in the foothills is a maintenance and fire liability. LP SmartSide is the material that gets you most of the wood look while sidestepping much of the wood's trouble, and that is exactly why it comes up so often for cabins and farmhouses in the Apple Hill area.

Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide throughout Northern California and up into the El Dorado County foothills. Here is what it is, who it is right for, and the honest limits.

Want the wood look done right? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

What LP SmartSide is

SmartSide is engineered wood. LP takes wood strands, treats them through its SmartGuard process — a combination of zinc borate for pest and fungal resistance, resins, and a water-resistant overlay — and presses them into lap boards, panels, and trim. The result behaves more predictably than a solid board: it is lighter than fiber cement, more forgiving to cut and fasten, and notably more impact-resistant, which matters where a stray limb, hail, or a thrown rock might otherwise chip harder cladding. It carries a well-regarded, long limited warranty; we go over the specific terms for your project rather than citing a single number.

Its defining quality for this area is the texture. SmartSide's cedar-grain face reads as real worked wood from the curb, so a cabin or a period farmhouse keeps its character in a way that vinyl and even some fiber-cement finishes cannot match.

Where it shines in the foothills

SmartSide fits several common Apple Hill situations well:

  • Cabins and rustic homes that want authentic wood texture without the solid-wood upkeep.
  • Board-and-batten and lap looks — the panels and boards handle both the traditional vertical batten look and horizontal lap cleanly.
  • Homes on rural lots where handling matters — its lighter weight and workability make it practical on difficult access and steeper foothill sites.
  • Additions and repairs where you want to blend new work into an existing wood-look wall.

The honest trade-offs

SmartSide is engineered wood, not stone, and it comes with real conditions:

  • It needs paint and periodic maintenance. SmartSide is designed to be painted (many boards ship pre-primed or pre-finished), and it wants to stay sealed. It is far lower-maintenance than solid wood, but it is not maintenance-free the way vinyl is — plan on repainting down the line.
  • It is a wood-based product. This is the fire-country caveat. SmartSide is engineered and treated, but it is not a noncombustible material in the way fiber cement is. On a parcel in a high or very high fire hazard zone, that distinction can matter for what Chapter 7A allows on the wall.

The fire-zone caveat, handled straight

Much of the Apple Hill area sits in the State Responsibility Area, with Cal Fire hazard designations up to very high depending on the parcel. California Building Code Chapter 7A governs the wall covering on designated parcels and favors noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies. Because SmartSide is a wood-based product, you cannot assume it satisfies that requirement everywhere.

What we do: check your parcel's designation with El Dorado County and confirm whether Chapter 7A applies to your scope before specifying. On parcels where the code allows it, SmartSide is a strong choice. Where a designated parcel requires a noncombustible wall covering, we will be straight with you and point toward fiber cement instead. Applicability is parcel- and scope-specific, never a blanket rule.

Installing it on a foothill home

A SmartSide job starts like any quality re-side: a full tear-off to the sheathing and substrate so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected and renewed — not down to the studs, unless the sheathing has failed, which is a bigger scope we would flag. Because SmartSide relies on staying sealed, the details matter: proper end-cut sealing, correct fastening and gapping, flashing at every opening, and a clean paint or finish. Those steps are what turn its warranty and its wood look into decades of service.

Cost drivers

SmartSide typically sits between vinyl and fiber cement on price, but the final figure depends on the home: size and stories, pre-finished versus field-painted, concealed repair found at tear-off, trim and window integration, rural access, and any fire-zone considerations. A walkthrough is how we price it.

Compare it to the alternatives

If SmartSide's paint cycle or the fire-zone limit gives you pause, fiber cement is the noncombustible, lowest-upkeep route; wood siding is the real-wood option if you want the genuine article and accept the maintenance; and vinyl is the budget play. The siding replacement overview and the Apple Hill siding page compare them all. FAQ

Is LP SmartSide okay for a fire hazard zone parcel? Not automatically. SmartSide is engineered and treated wood, but it is not noncombustible like fiber cement. On a designated parcel where Chapter 7A applies, a noncombustible wall covering may be required. We check your parcel with El Dorado County and advise honestly before specifying.

How much maintenance does SmartSide need? Much less than solid wood, but not none. It is designed to be painted and to stay sealed, so plan on a repaint well down the road. It is not maintenance-free the way vinyl is.

Does SmartSide really look like wood? Yes — its cedar-grain texture reads as worked wood from the curb, which is the main reason foothill cabins and farmhouses choose it over vinyl or smooth finishes.

Do I need a permit to install SmartSide in the Apple Hill area? A full re-side generally requires a building permit through El Dorado County Building Services; siding is not permit-exempt. Fire-zone WUI provisions may also apply. We confirm your parcel's requirements.
