Some Stockton homeowners want the grain and warmth of wood on their house but not the rot, splitting, and constant scraping that come with solid boards. LP SmartSide is built for that buyer. It's an engineered wood siding made from wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process and bonded with resins. It installs like wood, looks like wood, and costs less to maintain than solid cedar or redwood. Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide lap siding, panels, trim, and shakes on homes across Stockton. That includes Craftsman bungalows near downtown, the postwar ranches around Lincoln Village, and newer houses in Brookside and Spanos Park.

Thinking about SmartSide for your home? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167 and we'll talk through whether it's the right fit.

Why SmartSide makes sense on a Valley house

In Stockton, the main stresses on siding are heat, UV, and the dry afternoon wind off the Delta. SmartSide handles that setting in a few useful ways:

  • It's wood-based, so it looks like wood. The embossed cedar-grain texture reads convincingly from the street. That matters on older homes where vinyl would look out of place.
  • It's lighter than fiber cement. Boards are easier to handle, cut, and hang. On a large two-story, that can make the install faster.
  • It resists impact well. Engineered wood tends to shrug off dings from balls, bikes, and yard equipment that can crack more brittle claddings.
  • It takes paint well. SmartSide comes primed or prefinished, so you can choose nearly any color. Just like any painted exterior under Valley sun, it needs repainting over time.

To be clear, the Valley climate doesn't create a special case for or against SmartSide. The product works here the same way it works anywhere hot and dry. It performs well when it's installed to LP's instructions and kept painted.

Honest trade-offs to weigh

SmartSide isn't the right answer for every Stockton house, and it's better to know that before signing.

  • It needs paint maintenance. Fiber cement with a factory-baked finish, or through-color vinyl, asks less of you over the years. SmartSide's finish is paint, and strong Valley UV will eventually fade and chalk it, especially on west and south walls. Expect to repaint on a normal exterior-paint cycle.
  • It's not noncombustible. SmartSide is a wood product. Most of Stockton's flat, developed core generally falls outside CAL FIRE's Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, so fire code usually isn't what drives the siding choice here. If your parcel sits on the urban edge, we confirm its status with the city first. Where Chapter 7A requirements apply to the exterior walls, fiber cement is often the simpler route.
  • It depends on good installation. Cut edges have to be sealed, and LP specifies clearances from grade, roofing, and hardscape. The product is forgiving to cut and hang, but it doesn't forgive shortcuts at the bottom courses.

If low upkeep is your top priority, compare it against James Hardie (see our Stockton James Hardie page) or vinyl. If you want authentic solid boards for a period restoration, look at wood siding. SmartSide sits in the middle, with a wood look and more durability than the solid material it imitates.

The SmartSide lineup, in plain terms

LP sells SmartSide as a system of pieces, which lets you do a whole elevation in one material family:

  • Lap siding is the horizontal clapboard look. It comes in textured cedar-grain and smooth finishes and in several exposure widths. It suits most ranch, tract, and Craftsman-style houses in Stockton.
  • Panel siding is large-format vertical sheets, including grooved profiles. This is the product most people consider when they replace worn-out T1-11.
  • Trim and fascia use matching engineered wood for corners, window and door surrounds, and fascia boards, so the trim wears at the same rate as the walls.
  • Shakes are a shingle look for gables, accents, or a whole-house cottage style.
  • Primed or prefinished boards. You can paint on site, or choose LP's factory-finished option (sold as ExpertFinish) in a set color palette.

The warranty is a real part of SmartSide's appeal. LP offers a long limited warranty on the substrate and a separate warranty on prefinished colors. Coverage depends on correct installation, and we walk you through the current terms for the exact product you choose.

A common Stockton scenario: swapping out tired hardboard or T1-11

Many Stockton tract homes were originally clad in hardboard lap or T1-11 plywood panels. After decades of Valley summers and a few missed paint cycles, those materials start swelling at the bottom edges, delaminating, and going soft near the ground. SmartSide panels and lap boards are a natural next step. They keep a similar look, especially the grooved panel profiles, while holding up far better than the originals.

On that kind of job, the old cladding comes off to the sheathing/substrate. That lets us see what matters most: whether the sheathing is sound, whether a working water-resistive barrier (WRB) is in place, and whether the flashing around windows, doors, and roof-wall intersections was ever done correctly. Many older Stockton assemblies predate current WRB and flashing practice. We repair damaged substrate, install or renew the WRB, correct the flashing, and then hang the SmartSide. The framing is only exposed if the sheathing itself has failed and has to be replaced, which is a bigger scope we'd flag before going further. For the full picture of that decision, see our Stockton siding replacement page.

How we install it

The job follows a predictable path:

  1. We measure and write a defined scope.
  2. We pull the permit.
  3. We tear off the old siding and repair what's underneath.
  4. We install the WRB and flashing.
  5. We hang the SmartSide with the required clearances and seal every field-cut edge.
  6. We finish with paint or prefinished trim, then walk the exterior with you.

We also pay attention to details that matter on Valley lots. For example, if lawn sprinklers throw water directly against the lower courses, it's worth adjusting the heads. That's standard good practice for any wood-based siding, not a Stockton-specific defect.

Re-siding in Stockton is permitted work through the City of Stockton's Building & Life Safety division, part of Community Development. We file the permit and schedule the inspections. You can see examples of our finished exteriors on the projects page.

What drives the cost

We don't publish prices because SmartSide jobs vary a lot. The main factors are:

  • The wall area and number of stories
  • Lap versus panel versus shakes, and primed versus prefinished
  • How much trim and detail is on the house
  • How much hidden substrate or dry-rot repair turns up at tear-off
  • Access, such as tight side yards, landscaping, and second-story walls

In most comparisons, SmartSide lands between vinyl and premium fiber cement. We give you a firm number after we've seen the house.

FAQ

Does LP SmartSide hold up in Stockton's summer heat? Yes, when it's installed to LP's instructions and kept painted. The heat doesn't damage the engineered-wood substrate. What Valley sun does wear down is the paint. Plan on normal exterior repainting, and consider lighter colors or the factory-finished option on sun-heavy walls.

Is SmartSide a good replacement for the T1-11 on my house? It's one of the most common upgrades for failing T1-11. SmartSide's grooved panel profiles keep a similar vertical look, and lap siding is an option if you want to change the style. We remove the old panels, inspect and repair the sheathing and WRB, and then install the new siding.

Do I need a permit to install SmartSide in Stockton? Yes. Exterior re-siding goes through the City of Stockton's Building & Life Safety division. We handle the application and inspections as part of the job.

Should I choose SmartSide or fiber cement? Choose SmartSide if you want a lighter, impact-resistant board with real wood texture and you don't mind periodic painting. Choose fiber cement if you want a noncombustible material with a baked-on finish that needs less upkeep, or if fire-code requirements apply to your parcel. We're happy to price both.
