LP SmartSide is the answer for Napa homeowners who want the warmth and grain of real wood siding but not the maintenance headaches that come with solid cedar or redwood. It's engineered wood — wood strands bound with resins and treated through LP's SmartGuard process for resistance to moisture, fungal decay, and termites — finished with a deep, authentic wood texture that reads far more like natural lumber than any vinyl or, arguably, than fiber cement.

This page covers what SmartSide is, who it's for, and how it compares. To weigh it against the alternatives, see fiber cement, wood, and the Bay Area siding replacement hub.
The appeal is a specific combination that no other single product quite matches.
A genuine wood look. SmartSide is embossed with a real cedar-grain texture and comes in long lap boards, panels, trim, and shake and vertical profiles. On a Napa home where you want warmth and character — a hillside home among the oaks, a remodel that wants to feel of-a-place — it delivers that without the upkeep of solid wood.
Lighter and tougher to handle than cement board. Compared with fiber cement, SmartSide is noticeably lighter and more impact-resistant — it won't crack or chip from a stray ladder or a thrown ball the way brittle cement board can. It also cuts and fastens more easily, which makes for clean detailing around Napa's varied rooflines and additions.
A strong warranty. LP backs SmartSide with a well-regarded, long limited warranty (we'll go over the exact terms and what they cover for your project rather than quote a figure here). It's a big part of why the product has earned homeowner confidence.
SmartSide is engineered to resist decay and pests, but it is a wood-based, painted siding — it needs its finish maintained. Boards come pre-primed or factory-finished, and over the years the paint will need refreshing on a cycle (longer than solid wood, but not "never" the way vinyl is). If a fully maintenance-free finish is your goal, vinyl or factory-finished fiber cement is the direction. If you want the richest possible real-wood look and are willing to maintain it, solid wood siding is the other end of the spectrum. SmartSide sits deliberately in between.
One important Napa caveat: combustibility. SmartSide is a wood-based product. It is not noncombustible the way fiber cement is. On a hillside or wildland-edge parcel that may fall in a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone or WUI area, that matters — those parcels generally point toward noncombustible cladding. Whether your address triggers those provisions is parcel-specific (see below). On the valley floor, where fire exposure is lower, SmartSide's combustibility is far less likely to be a limiting factor, and its strengths come to the fore.
A full re-side in Napa generally requires a building permit, which we handle. If your parcel is on a hillside or near the wildland edge, it may fall within a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone or WUI area where California Building Code Chapter 7A governs exterior walls and calls for noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials. Chapter 7A is performance-based, and whether it applies depends on your specific parcel and the scope of work. We confirm the requirements with the City or County before speccing — and if your address calls for noncombustible cladding, we'll tell you SmartSide isn't the right fit for that wall and point you to fiber cement instead of selling you something that won't qualify. (We don't give insurance advice — talk to your carrier.)
The process mirrors any quality re-side: on-site assessment and measurement, product and profile selection, permitting, then tear-off of the old cladding. We inspect the sheathing, repair anything that's failed, renew the water-resistive barrier, and flash the windows, doors, and penetrations before the SmartSide goes up to LP's installation specifications — proper fastening, gapping, and end-sealing at cuts are what keep the warranty intact and the wall dry. We finish with trim, caulk, and paint as specified, then walk the job with you. Because Napa summers are hot and dry and the winters wet, correct end-cut sealing and flashing detail matter; a wood-based product rewards careful installation.
SmartSide typically prices between vinyl and premium fiber cement or solid wood. The drivers are home size and stories, whether you choose pre-primed (paint in the field) or factory-finished, the profile and amount of trim and shake detailing, the sheathing condition found at tear-off, and access. We quote after seeing the walls.
How is LP SmartSide different from fiber cement? SmartSide is engineered wood with a warmer, more authentic grain, it's lighter and more impact-resistant, and it's easier to work. Fiber cement is noncombustible and needs less finish maintenance. The big dividers are the fire question and how much you value the real-wood look versus low upkeep.
Is SmartSide okay for a Napa home in a fire hazard zone? It's a wood-based, combustible product, so on a parcel in a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone or WUI area it's generally not the right choice — those point to noncombustible fiber cement. Whether your address triggers Chapter 7A is parcel-specific, and we confirm with the AHJ before speccing.
How often will I need to repaint SmartSide? Less often than solid wood, but it is a painted product with a maintenance cycle — not maintenance-free like vinyl. Factory-finished options extend the interval. We'll set realistic expectations for your finish choice.
Do I need a permit for a SmartSide re-side in Napa? A full re-side generally requires a building permit, which we pull as part of the job.
