If you love the look of real wood siding but not the endless maintenance that comes with it, LP SmartSide is the material that usually gets floated — and for good reason. It is engineered wood: real wood strands bonded with resins and treated through LP's SmartGuard process for resistance to moisture, fungal decay, and termites, then finished with a deep wood grain. On the tree-lined custom homes that define Alamo, it hits a sweet spot between the warmth of cedar and the practicality of a modern product. Bay Area Siding Company, a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, installs LP SmartSide across the San Ramon Valley.

Alamo's aesthetic leans natural — board-and-batten, lap siding, deep eaves, and homes that sit comfortably among oaks and hillside greenery. Solid cedar or redwood delivers that look beautifully but asks a lot in return: regular refinishing, vigilance against rot at the ground and the trim, and repairs where pests get in. LP SmartSide keeps the warm, textured wood appearance while sidestepping most of that. It comes in lap, panel, board-and-batten, trim, and shake profiles, so it can carry a whole elevation or just the gables and accents.
Fiber cement and LP SmartSide are the two products Alamo homeowners most often weigh against each other, and the differences are real:
The honest counterpoint: SmartSide is a wood-based product and needs to stay painted and sealed. It is not noncombustible the way fiber cement is, which matters for parcels near the wildland edge (more on that below). We lay both options side by side on-site — see our fiber cement hub for that comparison.
SmartSide arrives pre-primed or pre-finished, and the finish is durable, but this is still a material you keep painted. Under Alamo's strong inland UV and hot, dry summers, plan on periodic repainting over the years — less often than bare cedar, but not never. Kept sealed, it holds up well; neglected at the cut edges and penetrations, any wood-based product will eventually take on moisture. Detailing the ends and joints correctly at install is where longevity is won.
Some Alamo parcels sit near the Las Trampas open space to the west or the Diablo foothills to the east, where combustible-cladding and fire-area building questions can arise. LP SmartSide is a treated wood product, not a noncombustible one. Whether the state's fire-area material provisions actually apply to a given address depends on its hazard-zone designation and the scope of work — we confirm that with Contra Costa County, and on parcels where noncombustible cladding is called for, we would point you toward fiber cement instead. On the many Alamo homes that sit off the wildland grade, that constraint simply does not apply.
A SmartSide re-side starts with tear-off to the sheathing and substrate, where we inspect and renew the water-resistive barrier and flashing before the new material goes up; the panels and planks are then fastened and the joints, ends, and penetrations detailed and sealed to LP's specs — which is also what protects the warranty. Framing only enters the scope if the sheathing itself is compromised.
Alamo is unincorporated, so the permit and inspections go through Contra Costa County's Department of Conservation and Development, Building Inspection Division in Martinez. We handle it.
SmartSide typically lands between vinyl and fiber cement on material cost, and its lighter weight can help on labor where access is difficult. The real drivers are the same as any re-side: the profiles and finish you choose, the number of stories and how intricate the elevations are, the amount of trim, what tear-off reveals, and access on larger or sloped lots. We give you a real figure after seeing the walls.
Is LP SmartSide real wood? It is engineered wood — real wood strands bonded and treated through LP's SmartGuard process, then finished with a wood grain. It gives the warmth of wood with far better resistance to moisture, decay, and termites than solid lumber.
How does it compare to fiber cement for an Alamo home? SmartSide is lighter, more impact-resistant, and easier to work, with a warmer wood look; fiber cement is noncombustible and needs no repainting. For parcels near the wildland edge, fiber cement is often the better call; off the fire grade, SmartSide is a strong choice. We compare both on-site.
Will I have to repaint it? Periodically, yes — less often than bare cedar, but SmartSide is a wood-based product that should stay painted and sealed, especially under Alamo's hot, sunny summers. Good edge and joint detailing at install extends the intervals.
Do I need a permit in Alamo? Yes. Because Alamo is unincorporated, the permit and inspections go through Contra Costa County's Building Inspection Division. We take care of it.
