Many San Jose homeowners want the warmth of real wood grain without the upkeep of cedar. Others want a durable replacement for the hardboard or T1-11 that came with their house. LP SmartSide is often on the shortlist for both groups. It is an engineered wood siding made from wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process. It comes in lap, panel, shake, and trim profiles, and it is lighter and easier to work than fiber cement.
Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide across the South Bay. We are a Marin-based siding and window contractor, and we will tell you plainly whether SmartSide is the right fit for your walls or whether another material serves you better.

LP SmartSide sits between solid wood and fiber cement. It offers:
SmartSide is a good product, but it is not the answer for every San Jose house.
If maintenance-free is your top priority, compare vinyl siding. If noncombustibility is essential, look at fiber cement or James Hardie. There is a local breakdown on our San Jose James Hardie page.
A large share of San Jose's housing went up in the postwar decades, roughly the 1950s through the 1970s. Many of those homes were clad in hardboard (Masonite-type) lap siding or T1-11 plywood panels. After decades of winter rain soaking into joints and cut edges, a lot of that siding now shows the same symptoms:
SmartSide is a popular successor for these homes because it keeps a similar look while bringing modern treatment and a warrantied product. It comes as lap siding for a hardboard house and as grooved panel siding for a T1-11 house. For a homeowner who likes their home's character but is tired of repairing it, that continuity is the appeal.
We do not recommend installing new siding over failing panels. A proper re-side removes the old cladding down to the sheathing, so the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing can be inspected. Any damaged sheathing gets replaced before new boards go on.
This is also where windows and siding intersect. A tear-off is the ideal time to re-flash openings or upgrade original aluminum single-pane windows. See San Jose window replacement.
San Jose has real mid-century modern neighborhoods. The best known is the Fairglen Additions in Willow Glen, a 218-home Eichler tract built from 1959 to 1961 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. On homes like these, profile and proportion matter more than brand names. The vertical, grooved panel look of the original cladding is part of the architecture.
SmartSide's panel products can be a reasonable way to echo that vertical expression on some mid-century homes. We review groove spacing, trim approach, and finish with you before recommending it.
If your home is historically listed or on the City's Historic Resources Inventory, additional review may apply. We check that as part of scoping rather than assuming.
Parts of San Jose, largely in the eastern and western foothills, fall within designated Wildland-Urban Interface or Fire Hazard Severity Zone areas. On those parcels, Chapter 7A of the California Building Code sets ignition-resistant requirements for exterior wall coverings and certain other assemblies.
Whether a specific engineered wood product and wall assembly is acceptable depends on:
It is not a blanket yes or no. Noncombustible fiber cement is a commonly used route on these lots. If your home is in a mapped zone, we confirm requirements with the City before specifying SmartSide. If it is not a good fit, we will say so and quote an alternative.
The City of San José requires a building permit to replace exterior siding. Repairs under 10 square feet of wall area are exempt. Qualifying like-for-like replacements on single-family and duplex properties can often be permitted over the counter, while other scopes go through plan review. We handle the permit for your project.
A typical job follows this sequence:
We price after seeing the house. The main drivers are:
SmartSide typically lands between vinyl and premium fiber cement or wood in overall project cost. Your exact number depends on those variables.

Is LP SmartSide a good choice for San Jose's hot summers? It can be, as long as it is properly installed and the finish is maintained. Heat and UV mainly work on the paint, so expect periodic repainting on sun-exposed walls. Prefinished boards help with this, and color choice is worth discussing with us.
Can I use LP SmartSide on a foothill home in a fire hazard zone? It depends on your parcel's designation, the specific product and assembly, and your scope, because Chapter 7A requirements apply to particular wall assemblies. We confirm with the City of San José before specifying. On many of these lots, noncombustible fiber cement is the more straightforward path.
Do I need a permit to replace my siding with SmartSide in San Jose? Yes. Siding replacement requires a building permit from the City of San José. Small repairs under 10 square feet are exempt, and many like-for-like single-family and duplex jobs can be permitted over the counter.
How does SmartSide compare with fiber cement? SmartSide is lighter, more impact-tolerant, and easier to work, with a strong wood texture. Fiber cement is noncombustible and very dimensionally stable. Both need periodic paint. The right pick depends on your parcel, look, and budget.
