For a Moraga homeowner who loves the warmth of real wood but has lived through the rot, splitting, and repaint cycle it demands, LP SmartSide is the engineered middle path. It is treated wood strands and fibers bonded with resins and waxes and finished through LP's SmartGuard process, which gives you a genuine wood texture — lap, panel, trim, and shake profiles — that is lighter and more impact-tolerant than fiber cement and easier to work on a complex hillside elevation. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install LP SmartSide across Lamorinda.

A lot of Moraga was built out from the 1960s through the 1980s — ranch, split-level, and mid-century homes, many with the warm, grained cladding of their era. When that original wood or hardboard siding wears out, homeowners often want to keep the same character without signing up for the same maintenance. LP SmartSide does that: it carries a convincing wood grain and takes paint well, but the SmartGuard treatment is engineered to resist the fungal decay and termite damage that finish off softwood siding on Moraga's shaded, damp canyon walls. It still needs periodic repainting — this is a wood-based product, not a maintenance-free one — but the intervals are longer and the substrate is far more forgiving than solid lumber.
Its lighter weight and workability are a real advantage on the custom, multi-elevation homes tucked into the hills above Rheem Valley and around Campolindo, where lots of corners, gables, and transitions make a heavy, brittle board slower and costlier to detail well.
This is where a Moraga homeowner has to think carefully. Moraga sits in the Moraga-Orinda Fire District, and the eastern and northeastern hills and open-space-adjacent parcels fall within the fire hazard severity zones on the updated 2025 Cal Fire maps. LP SmartSide is a wood-based product; it is not noncombustible the way fiber cement is. On a parcel carrying a fire-hazard designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the materials allowed on regulated exterior assemblies, and there fiber cement is usually the better fit. Whether Chapter 7A applies to your address depends on the parcel and the scope of work, which we confirm with the Town and the fire district before speccing — we will not put a combustible cladding on a wall the code says should be noncombustible. On lower, non-designated lots, SmartSide's wood look and workability are a strong choice.
The warranty is one of the reasons the product is well regarded — LP backs SmartSide with a long limited warranty. We install to LP's specifications so the coverage holds; confirm the exact term and conditions against LP's current warranty documentation rather than a figure quoted here.
We re-side by removing the old cladding to the sheathing and substrate, then inspecting and renewing the water-resistive barrier and flashing before the new SmartSide goes up — proper gapping, fastening, and painted or sealed field cuts matter with an engineered wood product. Framing behind the sheathing is only involved if the sheathing has failed. Permits run through the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development, with Town Planning or Engineering sign-off on most exterior work; we coordinate it. Cost drivers: the profile and finish, stories and elevation complexity, substrate repair found at tear-off, and hillside access. We price the specific home.
Is LP SmartSide real wood? It is engineered wood — treated wood strands and fibers bonded and finished through LP's SmartGuard process. You get a real wood grain and a paintable surface, engineered to resist the decay and termites that damage solid lumber.
Can I use LP SmartSide on a Moraga hillside parcel near open space? Only where the code allows it. SmartSide is combustible, so on a parcel with a fire-hazard designation where Chapter 7A can govern regulated assemblies, fiber cement is usually the right call. We confirm your parcel's designation and scope with the Town and the Moraga-Orinda Fire District before recommending a material.
Does it still need painting? Yes, periodically — it is a wood-based product. But the intervals are longer than solid wood and the treated substrate is far less prone to rot and swelling.
Why choose SmartSide over fiber cement? Weight, impact resistance, and workability — it is lighter, handles knocks better, and is faster to detail on a complex elevation. The trade-off is combustibility, which is why the parcel's fire designation drives the decision here.
