LP SmartSide is engineered wood siding: real wood strands bonded with resins and zinc-borate treatment (LP's SmartGuard process), pressed into boards, panels, and trim. It's the material people reach for when they want the warmth and texture of wood without the constant upkeep of solid cedar or redwood. Bay Area Siding Company installs SmartSide across San Andreas and the Calaveras County foothills, and it's a genuinely good fit for a lot of homes up here — with one caveat about fire we'll get to honestly.

Want the wood look without the wood maintenance? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

Why homeowners choose SmartSide here

Engineered wood earns its place on a foothill home for reasons that are more practical than they first appear:

  • Real wood character. SmartSide has a convincing wood grain and takes deep, saturated paint colors, so it looks at home on ranch, farmhouse, and updated Gold Country stock in a way vinyl can't quite match.
  • Light and impact-tough. It's meaningfully lighter than fiber cement and more forgiving of impact — it won't chip or crack the way a brittle cement board can. That also makes it faster and cleaner to install, with no silica dust to manage.
  • Treated against rot and termites. The SmartGuard treatment resists the fungal decay and insect pressure that punish untreated wood — useful on a wall that soaks through a wet winter and bakes all summer.
  • Long trim and panel lengths that reduce seams, and factory-primed or pre-finished options that shorten the finish work.
  • Well-regarded warranty. LP backs SmartSide with a long limited warranty; we'll walk you through the current terms for your project rather than quote a figure that shifts.

The honest trade-offs

SmartSide is a wood product, and that shapes where it belongs:

  • It needs periodic paint. Unlike vinyl or fiber cement's factory finish, the coating on engineered wood is part of the system that keeps it sound. On the high-UV San Andreas exposure, staying on top of the finish over the years matters — this is a material for an owner who'll maintain it, not one who wants zero upkeep.
  • It is combustible. This is the important one in the foothills. On oak-woodland and forested parcels, a fire-hazard designation can bring California Building Code Chapter 7A into play, and Chapter 7A generally favors noncombustible or tested ignition-resistant materials on regulated wall assemblies. As a treated wood product, SmartSide is not noncombustible. Whether the code applies depends on your parcel's mapped status and the scope of work — we confirm with Calaveras County before speccing — but on a regulated fire parcel we'd steer you toward fiber cement instead.

Where SmartSide is the right answer in San Andreas

On a lot away from the highest fire mapping, where you want a warm, painted wood look, a lighter wall, and a friendlier install than fiber cement, SmartSide is often the sweet spot. It's also a common upgrade path from failing T1-11 or old solid wood — you keep the wood aesthetic while trading up to a treated, engineered product, and you can weigh it against the wider field on the siding replacement hub.

Set against the neighbors: SmartSide is lighter and warmer than fiber cement but combustible where fiber cement is not; it offers more authentic texture than vinyl at a higher price and with a paint cycle; and it delivers the look of natural wood with far less maintenance and better rot resistance. The siding replacement hub frames the full comparison.

Permitting and fire, kept straight

Because San Andreas is unincorporated, a re-side is permitted through the Calaveras County Building Department in town, not a city office. Where a parcel carries a high or very high fire-hazard designation, Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering. It applies to specific assemblies and openings by parcel and scope — not automatically to every house — so we verify your designation with the county before recommending SmartSide over a noncombustible option.

What drives the cost

We price after the walkthrough. On a SmartSide job the drivers are the home's size and stories, panel versus lap and the trim package, factory-primed versus pre-finished, how much substrate repair turns up once the old siding is off (tear-off exposes the sheathing so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected), and access on rural or sloped lots.

FAQ

Can I use LP SmartSide on a fire-zone parcel in San Andreas? It depends on your parcel. SmartSide is treated engineered wood, not noncombustible, so on high or very high fire-hazard parcels where Chapter 7A governs the regulated walls, it usually isn't the right material for those assemblies. We check your designation with Calaveras County first and recommend fiber cement where the code requires it.

How much maintenance does SmartSide need? It's a painted wood product, so keeping the finish sound is part of ownership — meaningful under the strong foothill sun. It's far less demanding than solid cedar, but it's not the zero-maintenance option that vinyl or fiber cement's factory finish is.

Is SmartSide tougher than fiber cement? It's more impact-resistant and lighter, and it won't crack or chip the way brittle cement board can. Fiber cement wins on noncombustibility and on going longer between finish cycles. They're different trade-offs.

Can SmartSide replace my old T1-11? Yes, and it's a common upgrade — you keep a wood look while moving to a treated, engineered product. We'll assess the substrate once the old panels are off.
