Plenty of Sonoma homeowners want their house to look like wood. That means cedar-textured lap on a bungalow near the Plaza, or grooved vertical panels on a ranch house east of downtown. What they don't want is the scraping, patching, and repainting that solid wood demands through long, sun-heavy valley summers. LP SmartSide engineered wood siding sits in that space. It is made from wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process and bonded into boards and panels. The result carries a convincing wood grain and is built to resist the moisture, rot, and insect damage that wear down natural wood.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based (Marin) siding and window contractor working across the North Bay wine country. We install LP SmartSide on Sonoma homes. We'll also tell you plainly when a different material is the better fit for your parcel.

Why homeowners pick engineered wood over the alternatives

LP SmartSide earns its place on a short list for a few concrete reasons:

  • It reads as wood. The embossed grain and crisp profiles look at home on the lap-sided and shingled houses that give older Sonoma neighborhoods their character. It doesn't have the plastic sheen some people notice on vinyl.
  • It's lighter and easier to handle than fiber cement. Longer boards and less weight per piece can simplify installation, especially on second stories and awkward gable ends.
  • It stands up to knocks. Engineered wood is known for impact resistance. That matters on walls that see hose reels, bikes, garden carts, and the occasional errant baseball.
  • It's workable. It cuts and fastens more like lumber, which helps on homes with lots of trim transitions and irregular openings.
  • It carries a long manufacturer limited warranty when installed and finished to LP's requirements. We'll walk through the current terms for the specific products on your job rather than quoting a number from memory.

The honest trade-offs

Engineered wood is still wood-based, and that brings two realities worth weighing before you commit.

It needs paint. SmartSide ships primed, and LP also offers factory-prefinished options. Either way, the finish is what protects the board over time, and repainting is part of long-term ownership. Sonoma's hot, bright summers are hard on any exterior coating, especially on south- and west-facing walls. Plan for periodic repainting, just as you would with a painted wood home, though typically without the rot repairs that come with solid wood.

It is not a noncombustible material. This is the bigger question for many Sonoma parcels, and it gets its own section below.

If minimal maintenance is your top priority, compare vinyl siding. If fire performance leads, compare fiber cement and James Hardie. If you want the genuine article and accept the upkeep, look at natural wood siding. The LP SmartSide hub goes deeper on the product itself.

Where SmartSide fits Sonoma's housing stock

Sonoma's homes span a wide range of eras, and engineered wood suits some of them especially well:

  • Mid-century and ranch homes with aging T1-11. Many ranch and mid-century houses in the neighborhoods east and north of downtown were clad in grooved plywood panel siding that has swelled, delaminated, or gone soft at the bottom edge. SmartSide's panel products can carry forward a similar vertical, grooved look on a more durable engineered substrate. For many owners, that is the most natural like-for-like upgrade.
  • Bungalows and period homes. Lap profiles and shake-style products can respect the proportions of older houses near the Plaza. If your property sits within or near the Sonoma Plaza historic district, or carries any preservation status, raise it early. Approved profiles and finishes may be part of the conversation with the City before anything is specified.
  • Outbuildings and garages. Detached garages, studios, and barns-style structures are common on larger valley lots. They are a frequent place where SmartSide's wood look and workability pay off.

Fire exposure: the question to settle first

Sonoma's fire history is real. The 2017 Nuns Fire burned through the surrounding valley and hills and destroyed homes outside downtown. In early 2025, Cal Fire's statewide update expanded the High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones within and around the city. That update is reflected in the City of Sonoma's revised map, with the heavier designations concentrated toward the hills and wildland edges.

If your parcel carries one of those designations, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering on the regulated assemblies involved in your project. It generally points toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials. Whether a particular engineered-wood product and assembly is acceptable there depends on that product's testing and listings, your parcel's designation, and the scope of work. We don't assume the answer. We check the designation and confirm with the City of Sonoma before recommending SmartSide on a fire-zone wall.

On many exposed parcels, fiber cement is the more straightforward path, and we'll say so. For homes in the flatter, in-town areas without those designations, SmartSide remains a strong contender.

How a SmartSide re-side goes

A new-siding job succeeds or fails on what's behind the boards, so we start by removing the existing cladding. That exposes the sheathing and substrate, the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and the flashing, so each can be inspected:

  • We look for soft sheathing, old water damage, and hidden rot. These show up most often around windows and along the base of the wall.
  • We renew or correct the WRB. Many older Sonoma homes have torn building paper or none that meets current expectations.
  • We flash windows, doors, and penetrations properly.

Framing behind the sheathing only comes into play if we find damage that warrants opening the wall further. We would discuss that with you before proceeding.

Installation then follows LP's instructions, and they are specific. They cover required clearances from grade and from roof surfaces, gapping and fastening, and sealing field-cut edges. Getting these details right protects both the wall and the warranty.

Exterior siding work in the city is permitted through the City of Sonoma Building Division, which adopted the 2025 California Building Standards Code effective January 1, 2026. We handle the permit and confirm requirements for your address.

If your windows are due too, doing both at once lets the openings be flashed as one system. See our Sonoma window replacement page, or the broader Sonoma siding replacement overview if you're still choosing a material.

What moves the price

We price SmartSide after a walkthrough rather than online. The main variables are:

  • Wall area and number of stories
  • The product family: lap, panel, shake-style, or trim, and primed versus prefinished
  • How much sheathing, WRB, and flashing correction the tear-off reveals
  • The amount of trim and the number of window and door openings
  • Removal and disposal of the existing siding
  • Access on sloped or tight lots
  • Whether painting is included in the scope

FAQ

Can I use LP SmartSide if my Sonoma parcel is in a High or Very High fire zone? It depends. Chapter 7A requirements hinge on your parcel's designation, the specific product's testing and listings, and your project scope. We check the City of Sonoma's map and confirm with the Building Division. Where SmartSide isn't the right fit, fiber cement usually is.

Is SmartSide a good replacement for failing T1-11? Often, yes. LP's panel products can recreate the vertical grooved look on a more durable engineered substrate. The tear-off also lets us repair any water damage the old panels may have hidden.

How often will it need painting? It varies with exposure, color, and coating quality. Sun-facing walls in Sonoma's summers typically need attention sooner. We'll give you a realistic expectation for your house.

How is it different from fiber cement? SmartSide is lighter, more impact-resistant, and easier to work. Fiber cement is noncombustible and generally holds paint longer. Your choice usually comes down to fire exposure, look, and maintenance tolerance.
