If you love the look of wood siding but not the maintenance it demands, LP SmartSide is the material that gets brought up most often — and for good reason. It's engineered wood: real wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process and bonded into boards, panels, and trim that keep the warm grain and texture of natural wood while resisting the rot, swelling, and insect damage that plague the real thing. Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide on Danville homes where an owner wants that authentic character without signing up for a lifetime of the upkeep solid cedar requires.

SmartSide sits in a genuine sweet spot between solid wood and fiber cement, and its strengths are its own:
The honest trade-off is that it's still a wood-based product: it has to be kept painted and sealed. It's engineered to hold finish far better and longer than solid wood, but it isn't the zero-maintenance, noncombustible proposition that fiber cement is.
Danville's inland climate — hot, dry summers with strong UV, then wet winters — is exactly where a properly finished engineered-wood product does well, provided the paint program is maintained. SmartSide's factory treatment and priming give it a real head start over field-primed solid wood in that cycle.
The one place to pause is the parcel. On lots near the western hills or the Mount Diablo foothills that fall in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone or the Wildland-Urban Interface, a combustible wood-based cladding is a weaker fit, and the wall assembly may be subject to Chapter 7A provisions. Whether that applies to your specific parcel and scope is something we confirm with the Town — but if you're in a hillside fire area, the honest recommendation shifts toward noncombustible fiber cement or James Hardie. On the flatter mid-valley lots around Greenbrook and Sycamore, SmartSide is squarely in its element.
Against solid wood siding, SmartSide trades a little authenticity for a lot less maintenance and better dimensional stability. Against fiber cement, it's warmer, lighter, and more impact-resistant, but combustible and needing repaint cycles fiber cement doesn't. Against vinyl, it's a clear step up in look and substance at a higher price. We install all of these, so we'll place SmartSide honestly rather than sell it past its fit — start at the LP SmartSide hub or the siding replacement overview for the wider view.
Re-siding with SmartSide is permitted work. The Town of Danville's Building Division requires a building permit for residential siding replacement, with a submittal that documents the existing and proposed siding type, material, and color. Scenic Hillside or Major Ridge Line parcels may draw additional Planning Division review, and WUI parcels additional Building Division review — parcel- and scope-specific, and both things we confirm with the Town before spec'ing a combustible cladding. We file through the Permit Center at 500 La Gonda Way.
A SmartSide re-side follows the same disciplined tear-off: the old cladding comes off to the sheathing and substrate, the water-resistive barrier and flashing get inspected and corrected, and only then do the new boards go on — cut, sealed at the ends, and finished per LP's specification so the SmartGuard treatment isn't compromised. Framing is only involved if the sheathing itself has failed. Cost tracks square footage and stories, the profile you choose, the paint program, substrate repair found at tear-off, access, and any Planning or WUI review. We quote after measuring.
Is LP SmartSide as low-maintenance as fiber cement? Not quite — it's engineered wood, so it needs to be kept painted and sealed. It holds finish far better and longer than solid wood, but fiber cement is the choice if zero repaint cycles and noncombustibility are the priority.
Can I use SmartSide on a foothill lot in a Danville fire zone? It's a wood-based, combustible product, so on parcels in a fire-hazard zone or the WUI it's a weaker fit and the assembly may fall under Chapter 7A. We confirm your parcel with the Town and generally recommend fiber cement there.
How is SmartSide different from real cedar? It keeps the wood look and takes finish beautifully, but it's dimensionally stable, more impact-resistant, and far less prone to rot, cupping, and insect damage than solid cedar — with much less maintenance.
Does it come pre-finished? It's treated and primed at the factory and typically finish-painted, either pre-finished or in the field. We'll match the approach to your color and the elevation's exposure.
