If you want the warmth and grain of real wood without the endless upkeep solid wood demands, LP SmartSide is the material to look at. It's engineered wood — wood strands bonded with resins and treated through LP's SmartGuard process for resistance to moisture, fungal decay, and termites — finished with a texture that reads convincingly as milled wood. Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide across Berkeley, and this page explains where it shines and where it doesn't.

How engineered wood is different

SmartSide starts as wood but behaves better than a sawn board. The SmartGuard treatment — zinc borate and a resin binder worked through the strands, not just brushed on — is what gives it its durability against the rot and pests that plague natural wood. A few practical consequences follow:

  • Real wood character. Deep, authentic grain in lap, panel, and trim profiles — it looks like wood because it largely is wood.
  • Lighter and easier to work than fiber cement. That means less demanding handling on site and, on many jobs, more efficient installation.
  • More impact-resistant than fiber cement, which can chip; SmartSide takes a knock better.
  • Comes primed, ready for paint. You get to choose the color, and the factory prime gives paint a sound base.

The honest trade-off: it still needs to be painted and maintained on a cycle. It is not a paint-it-once material the way through-color vinyl is, and — importantly for Berkeley — it is a wood-based product, so it is combustible. More on that below.

SmartSide versus the alternatives

  • Versus solid wood — SmartSide keeps the look while sharply reducing the rot, insect, and stability problems of natural wood siding. Lower maintenance, more predictable.
  • Versus fiber cement — it's lighter, easier to work, and more impact-resistant, and many people find the wood grain warmer. But fiber cement and James Hardie are noncombustible, which is the deciding factor on fire-zone parcels.
  • Versus vinyl — a more premium, more authentic look than vinyl, at a higher cost and with a paint-maintenance commitment vinyl doesn't have.

Where it fits in Berkeley

For Berkeley homes in the flats and lower neighborhoods, LP SmartSide is a strong middle path: the wood look the city's architecture favors, with far less fuss than cedar or redwood. The caveat is the hills. Because SmartSide is engineered wood and therefore combustible, it is generally not the right choice for a parcel in Berkeley's Combined Hillside District or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, where the exterior-wall rules favor noncombustible or ignition-resistant claddings and tested assemblies. Applicability depends on your parcel's designation and the scope of work, so we confirm it with the City — but if you're up the slopes, we'll usually point you to fiber cement instead. For the wider decision, see Berkeley siding replacement.

Warranty

LP SmartSide is well regarded for its warranty coverage — a long limited warranty backs the product line when it's installed to specification. We'll confirm the current term and its transferability for your project at estimate time; warranty details are set by the manufacturer and we don't want to quote a figure that's since changed.

Cost drivers

SmartSide typically sits between vinyl and fiber cement on cost. The total moves with the home's size and stories, the profiles and amount of trim, whether you're doing a full wrap or partial walls, your paint and color choices, and what tear-off reveals once the old siding is off and the sheathing, water-resistive barrier, and flashing can be inspected. Substrate repairs found there add scope, and a City of Berkeley permit applies to siding work.

FAQ

Is LP SmartSide real wood or a wood look-alike? It's genuinely wood-based — engineered from wood strands and treated through LP's SmartGuard process — which is why the grain looks authentic. It's not a plastic imitation, and it's not solid lumber either.

Can I use LP SmartSide on a Berkeley hills home? Because it's engineered wood, it's combustible, so it's generally not the right pick for hill or fire-zone parcels where noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials are favored. For those homes we usually recommend fiber cement; we confirm your parcel's status with the City first.

Does SmartSide need painting like real wood? It needs periodic repainting, yes — less trouble than solid wood because it resists rot and pests, but it's not maintenance-free the way vinyl is. It ships primed so you choose the color.

How does it compare to James Hardie? SmartSide is lighter, easier to work, and more impact-resistant, with a warmer wood grain; Hardie fiber cement is noncombustible and doesn't need repainting on the same cycle. On fire-zone parcels that noncombustibility is decisive; elsewhere it comes down to look, budget, and maintenance appetite.
