Many Yountville homeowners want an exterior that still reads as wood. That holds for a restored residence near the Washington Street core, a vineyard-view home on the valley floor, or a board-and-batten design that suits the Napa Valley setting. Traditional wood siding delivers that look but asks for constant upkeep. Fiber cement delivers durability but can feel less like the real thing up close. LP SmartSide sits between them: an engineered wood siding with a genuine wood texture, lighter weight, and a treatment process designed to hold up better than untreated lumber. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install LP SmartSide as part of full re-siding projects in Yountville and across the region.

What LP SmartSide actually is

LP SmartSide is made from wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process. The strands are bonded with resins and additives that help the product resist moisture, fungal decay, and termites, then pressed into lap boards, panels, trim, and shake-style profiles. The surface is embossed with a cedar-like grain. It comes primed for paint, and LP also offers factory-finished options in some profiles and colors. We confirm what's available for your specific project.

It's worth being clear about what it is not. It isn't solid wood, and it isn't fiber cement. It's its own category, with its own strengths and its own trade-offs.

Why Yountville owners choose it

The look fits the valley. A lot of homes here lean toward materials that feel natural against vineyards and hills: lap siding, board-and-batten, shingle accents. SmartSide's grain texture and profile range let you get that character without committing to cedar or redwood maintenance.

It's lighter and tougher on impact than fiber cement. Engineered wood weighs noticeably less than fiber cement. It is also more forgiving of knocks from landscaping equipment, ladders, or a stray ball. It cuts and handles more like wood, which helps on homes with lots of trim detail, gables, and corners.

It resists the problems that ruin plain wood. The SmartGuard treatment targets rot and termites, two common failure points in older wood siding. That matters when you're replacing boards that have gone soft at the base of walls or around windows.

Long boards, fewer seams. Lap siding comes in long lengths, which means fewer butt joints across a long elevation. That gives a cleaner look and fewer places to maintain.

The honest trade-offs

It needs paint. SmartSide is a painted product, and paint eventually needs renewing. Yountville's summers are long, dry, and sunny, with midsummer highs typically in the mid-to-upper 80s. Strong sun and UV are hard on any painted finish, especially on south- and west-facing walls. A quality paint system and a factory finish (where offered) help, but plan for periodic repainting. If you want a finish you can largely forget about, compare fiber cement with a baked-on finish, or vinyl.

Installation details matter. LP's installation instructions set requirements for:

  • clearance above grade, roofs, and hardscape
  • fastening
  • gapping at joints
  • sealing any field-cut edges

The warranty depends on following them. Most long-term problems with engineered wood trace back to shortcuts here, such as boards run tight to a patio or cut ends left unsealed. We install to the manufacturer's instructions.

It's combustible. That matters on some Yountville parcels. This is the biggest local consideration, covered in its own section below.

Fire exposure: the valley floor vs. the hillsides

Napa Valley's 2017 and 2020 wildfire seasons shaped how many owners think about their home's exterior. Exposure in Yountville isn't uniform, though. The valley-floor town core is generally lower-risk. Parcels on the surrounding slopes can carry real wildland exposure.

Where a property falls within a designated fire-hazard severity zone, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering. That requirement applies to the wall assembly, not just the siding boards. Engineered wood is not a noncombustible material. Whether a particular SmartSide product and assembly can be used on a 7A-governed wall depends on the specific product, its documented compliance for that use, and your project's scope.

We don't make blanket assumptions. We check your parcel's designation against the Town's adopted maps and Cal Fire's hazard maps, then confirm acceptability with the Town of Yountville Building Division before specifying material.

If your home is on a hillside parcel, tell us early. Often the right answer there is James Hardie fiber cement on exposed elevations, a noncombustible option. For many valley-floor homes, SmartSide remains a straightforward choice.

How a SmartSide re-side goes

Installing LP SmartSide is part of a full replacement, not a layer over the old cladding.

  1. Tear-off. We remove the existing siding to the sheathing and substrate. This is where we inspect the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations. On older valley homes those layers are frequently worn or incomplete, and we repair or renew them before new siding goes up.
  2. Framing, only if needed. A standard re-side doesn't open the framing. That becomes a larger scope only if the sheathing itself has failed.
  3. Installation. SmartSide goes on per LP's instructions, with correct clearances, fastening, and sealed cut edges.
  4. Finish. We paint the siding, or use a factory finish where selected.

Permits. Exterior siding work in Yountville is permitted and inspected through the Town of Yountville Building Division. Because the older core has a defined historic character, we confirm early whether any design or historic-review step applies alongside the standard permit. We handle the permit and inspections.

For the broader decision of which material is right, start with our Yountville siding replacement page. If you're updating windows at the same time, the Yountville window replacement page covers glass and frame choices. Coordinating both in one project lets flashing at each opening be detailed together.

What drives the cost

We don't publish prices because the variables are specific to each home. The main factors are:

  • Home size and wall area. Square footage of wall, story count, and the number of corners, gables, and trim details.
  • Access. Hillside parcels and tight lot lines take more setup.
  • Profile mix. Lap, panel, shakes, and trim each price differently.
  • Finish. Field-painted versus factory-finished.
  • Repairs found at tear-off. Any sheathing, WRB, or flashing work.
  • Fire-zone requirements. Any material changes a fire-zone designation requires on exposed elevations.

A site walkthrough is how we give you an accurate number.

FAQ

Can I use LP SmartSide on a hillside home in Yountville? It depends on your parcel. Valley-floor homes in the town core are generally lower-risk. Hillside parcels in a designated fire-hazard severity zone may fall under Chapter 7A, which governs the exterior wall assembly. We confirm your parcel's designation and whether a given SmartSide product and assembly is acceptable with the Town of Yountville before specifying. On exposed parcels, fiber cement is often the simpler path.

How often will SmartSide need repainting in Yountville's sun? There's no fixed schedule. It depends on paint quality, color, and exposure, and sun-facing south and west walls wear fastest. A quality paint system or a factory finish extends the interval. Plan on periodic repainting as part of owning any painted siding.

Is LP SmartSide just particleboard or hardboard? No. It's made from treated wood strands through LP's SmartGuard process, which is designed to resist moisture, decay, and termites. That's different from the older hardboard siding that failed on many homes.

Do you install it over my existing siding? We don't recommend it. Removing the old cladding to the sheathing lets us inspect and repair the water-resistive barrier and flashing, which is where hidden moisture problems live.
