LP SmartSide is for San Rafael homeowners who want their house to look like wood without taking on the upkeep of solid cedar or redwood. It is engineered wood: wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process, bonded under heat and pressure, and pressed with a cedar-grain texture. The result reads as wood from the sidewalk. It is lighter and more impact-tolerant than fiber cement, and it cuts and handles much like lumber. Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide from our base in Larkspur, a short drive down the 101 from Terra Linda, Gerstle Park, Sun Valley and the hillside streets above downtown.

San Rafael's houses span more than a century of building styles, and engineered wood fits some of them better than others. It tends to suit homeowners who:
It is a less natural fit when a parcel's wildfire requirements point toward noncombustible cladding, or when the owner wants to paint as rarely as possible. Both are covered below.
The look. The embossed grain and crisp board edges hold up well at close range, which matters on San Rafael's walkable older blocks, where people see your house from ten feet away. The lap siding, panel siding, trim and shake-style products let one system handle an entire elevation.
Weight and toughness. Engineered wood boards are noticeably lighter than fiber cement of similar size. They also resist the impact dents and edge chips that can mark brittle materials during installation or from everyday knocks.
Workability. Crews cut and fasten it with familiar woodworking tools and techniques. That doesn't make installation casual, since LP's gapping, clearance, fastening and finishing specifications still have to be followed. But it can mean less fuss around trim details and irregular walls.
It needs paint maintenance. Primed boards must be painted, and that finish is the product's first line of defense. Plan on periodic repainting over the life of the siding. Any wood-based cladding does best when cut edges are sealed, ground and roof clearances are kept, and the finish is maintained. The discipline is the same, only easier than with natural wood.
It is a wood product. That matters most for fire-hazard parcels, discussed next.
Installation errors show up later. Engineered wood rewards careful detailing at butt joints, penetrations and kick-out flashing. Get those wrong and the problems surface years later. We follow LP's installation instructions so the warranty and the wall both perform as intended.
Much of San Rafael's hillside and wooded terrain carries a wildfire designation. The state's 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone update under SB 63 maps Moderate, High and Very High zones in Local Responsibility Areas. The City has noted these largely track its existing Wildland-Urban Interface boundaries, which already carry specific building requirements. The City also enforces vegetation management standards citywide.
What that means for siding depends on your exact parcel, the scope of work and the specific product and wall assembly. Where California's Chapter 7A ignition-resistant construction rules apply to exterior walls, the cladding has to meet those standards. Whether a given engineered wood product and assembly qualifies is something we confirm with the City of San Rafael's Building Division before specifying it, rather than assuming.
For many hillside homes, noncombustible fiber cement, including James Hardie, turns out to be the more straightforward path. On flatland streets outside the mapped zones, LP SmartSide is often an easy choice. We'll tell you which situation you're in.
| If you're weighing LP SmartSide against… | The short version | |---|---| | Fiber cement / James Hardie | Fiber cement is noncombustible and very dimensionally stable, but heavier and more demanding to install. LP is lighter and warmer-looking but is wood-based. | | Natural wood | Real cedar or redwood offers authenticity and repairability, but demands the most upkeep. LP gives a similar look with treated strands and less maintenance. | | Vinyl | Vinyl is typically the budget option with no painting, but it looks less like true wood and has a narrower range of dark colors on some lines. |
The LP SmartSide hub goes deeper on product lines. The San Rafael siding replacement page covers the broader decision of whether to replace at all.
A common San Rafael project is swapping failing T1-11 panels or weathered original boards on a post-war or mid-century house. Swelling, delamination and paint that won't stay put are the usual signs. LP SmartSide is a natural candidate here. Its lap siding can modernize the elevation, and its panel products can keep a vertical look on homes where that is part of the design.
On Terra Linda Eichlers and similar mid-century homes, we pay close attention to preserving the clean horizontal and vertical lines that define the architecture. We don't impose a profile that fights the house.
We start with a walk-around to discuss your goals and look for trouble spots. Once we've settled on a product and profile, we handle the City of San Rafael building permit, which a full re-side generally requires, and confirm any fire-zone requirements for your parcel.
On installation day, the old siding comes off down to the sheathing. That lets us inspect the substrate, water-resistive barrier and flashing, and repair anything that has failed. Only then does the new LP SmartSide go on, to the manufacturer's specifications. Trim, caulk and paint follow, and we finish with a walkthrough together. If the sheathing itself turns out to be damaged, we show you what we found and price that work before going further.
We price every home individually, and the main factors are predictable:
Pairing siding and window work lets the flashing be integrated in one pass.
Can I use LP SmartSide if my San Rafael home is in a fire hazard zone? It depends on your parcel, scope and the specific assembly. Where Chapter 7A requirements apply to exterior walls, we confirm product eligibility with the City's Building Division first. Noncombustible fiber cement is often the simpler route in mapped zones.
How often will LP SmartSide need repainting? It varies with the paint system, color and each wall's exposure. Plan on periodic repainting as with any painted siding. Keeping the finish sound protects the boards and supports the warranty.
Is LP SmartSide a good replacement for failing T1-11? Often, yes. It keeps a wood character, and panel and lap options let you either echo the original look or update it.
Does LP SmartSide cost more than vinyl? Generally it sits above vinyl and competes with fiber cement. Your actual number depends on the factors listed above, and we give you an itemized bid after seeing the house.
