Many Truckee owners want their house to look like it belongs in the forest. They picture lap boards, board-and-batten, or shakes with real wood grain. They don't want to strip and re-stain solid cedar every few summers. LP SmartSide is often where that search ends up. It is engineered wood siding made from treated wood strands, and it's built to give you the cabin look with less of the upkeep.

Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide on mountain homes. We detail each wall for what a high-Sierra winter does to it: deep snowpack at the base, freeze-thaw cycling, meltwater, and strong sun at altitude.

Weighing SmartSide for your Truckee home? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167. We'll look at your walls, your exposure, and your parcel before recommending anything.

Why SmartSide appeals to mountain homeowners

LP SmartSide is made from wood strands treated through LP's SmartGuard process. The strands are bound with resins and pressed into boards and panels with a cedar-style texture. The result looks and handles like wood but behaves more consistently than a sawn board.

Here's why that matters in Truckee:

  • It looks right on cabins and alpine homes. Truckee has older Donner-area cabins, A-frames, and custom homes in the forested subdivisions. A wood-grain surface suits them in a way smooth or plastic-looking cladding often doesn't.
  • It handles impact well. Snow and ice slide off roofs here, and chunks of ice, shovels, and snowblowers hit the lower walls. SmartSide is known for impact resistance compared with more brittle claddings. That is a practical advantage where the bottom of the wall takes abuse every winter.
  • It's lighter and easier to work than fiber cement. Boards come in long lengths and can be cut with ordinary woodworking tools. That can simplify installs on complicated cabin walls with lots of corners, gables, and trim.
  • It's paint-ready or factory-finished. SmartSide comes primed for field painting. LP also offers factory-prefinished options (ExpertFinish), which is useful in a town where outdoor painting weather is short.

Compared with solid wood, SmartSide gives up some authenticity and repairability. In return, it's more uniform and doesn't need as much stain-and-seal attention. Compared with fiber cement, it's warmer-looking and more forgiving to handle. However, it is a wood-based product, and that matters on fire-exposed parcels (more on that below). Compare the options on our LP SmartSide hub, the fiber cement and wood siding pages, and the Truckee James Hardie page.

The honest trade-offs at 6,000 feet

We'd rather you choose SmartSide with clear eyes than be surprised in year five.

  • The finish is your first line of defense. Engineered wood depends on its paint film. High-altitude UV chalks and fades finishes faster than at sea level. Expect to repaint on a regular cycle, and plan for sun-facing walls to need attention before shaded ones.
  • Cut edges and clearances are critical. SmartSide is treated, but it is still wood. It needs sealed or painted cut edges and the manufacturer's specified clearances from grade, roofs, decks, and hardscape. In snow country, those clearances protect the boards from sitting in meltwater. Skipping them is one of the most common ways engineered wood siding fails early.
  • It is not noncombustible. This is the big one for many Truckee parcels. If your home sits in a mapped high-hazard area of the wildland-urban interface, SmartSide may not be the simplest route. Fiber cement is noncombustible and usually the more straightforward choice there. Details are below.

Matching SmartSide products to Truckee homes

SmartSide comes in several formats. The right one usually follows the architecture:

  • Lap siding for the classic horizontal look on cabins and newer alpine homes.
  • Panel siding for vertical board-and-batten styles. This is a common swap for failing T1-11. Many older Truckee cabins were clad in T1-11 plywood that has since swelled or delaminated. SmartSide panel gives a similar vertical, rustic look with a more durable substrate.
  • Shakes for gable ends and accent walls where you want a shingled mountain texture.
  • Trim, fascia, and soffit so corners, window surrounds, and eaves match the siding.

Downtown is different. On or near the listed historic district around Commercial Row and Brickelltown, material, profile, and color can fall under the Town of Truckee's historic design guidelines. On those parcels, we confirm whether an engineered wood product fits the guidelines before we order anything.

How we install it for snow country

A good SmartSide job in Truckee depends as much on what's behind the siding as on the siding itself.

A standard re-side removes the old cladding down to the sheathing/substrate. That exposes the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing. It does not expose the studs. We then:

  • Inspect the sheathing, especially low on the walls and under windows where snowmelt collects. We tell you before expanding scope if any of it needs replacing.
  • Install or renew the WRB. Many older cabins never had a modern one.
  • Re-flash windows, doors, deck ledgers, and roof-to-wall transitions, and add kick-out flashing so meltwater is directed away from the wall.
  • Set the boards with LP's required clearances and fastening, seal cut edges, and finish the siding.

We schedule around Truckee's seasons, since both installation and field painting depend on weather. Factory-prefinished boards can help when the calendar is tight. If you're also replacing windows, doing both at once lets the window flashing and the new WRB be integrated properly. See our Truckee window replacement page.

Permits and wildfire considerations

Truckee is an incorporated town, so re-siding is permitted through the Town of Truckee's Building Division (Community Development Department), not Nevada County. Re-siding generally requires a building permit. The Town also applies its own mountain design standards, plus historic design review in and around the downtown district. We handle the permit and flag any review step early.

Truckee also sits in the wildland-urban interface, bordered by forest mapped at high and very high fire hazard. On parcels where California's Chapter 7A wildfire provisions apply, exterior wall coverings in the affected scope have to meet ignition-resistance requirements. Engineered wood siding is combustible. Whether a particular SmartSide product or assembly can be used on your parcel depends on:

  • your mapped zone,
  • the scope of work, and
  • current manufacturer compliance documentation.

We confirm all of that with the Town before recommending it. Where SmartSide isn't a clean fit, we'll tell you plainly and walk you through fiber cement instead.

What drives the cost

We don't publish prices, because Truckee jobs vary widely. The main factors are:

  • wall area and the number of stories;
  • how complex the cabin geometry is;
  • whether you choose primed or factory-prefinished boards;
  • how much trim, soffit, and shake detail is involved;
  • the condition of the sheathing and WRB once the old siding is off;
  • access and staging on sloped or snow-affected lots;
  • any historic or fire-related requirements tied to your parcel.

FAQs

Is LP SmartSide allowed in Truckee's fire-hazard areas? It depends on your parcel. Truckee is in the wildland-urban interface, and where Chapter 7A applies, wall coverings in the affected scope must meet ignition-resistance requirements. SmartSide is a wood-based, combustible product. We check your mapped zone, scope, and the current manufacturer documentation with the Town of Truckee before recommending it. On some parcels, fiber cement is the simpler path.

How does SmartSide hold up to snow and freeze-thaw? It performs well when it's installed to LP's specifications. That means proper clearances off grade and roofs so boards don't sit in snowmelt, sealed cut edges, a functioning WRB behind the siding, and a maintained paint finish. Its impact resistance is a real plus where ice and snow hit the lower walls.

Can SmartSide replace the old T1-11 on my cabin? Yes. This is one of the most common reasons Truckee owners call us. SmartSide panel siding keeps a vertical, rustic look and replaces a plywood siding that has often swelled or delaminated. We inspect the sheathing and WRB during tear-off.

How often will I need to repaint? It varies with exposure and finish. Strong high-altitude sun wears paint faster, especially on south- and west-facing walls. Factory-prefinished boards and a quality paint system help stretch the cycle, but plan on periodic repainting.
