Real wood siding has a grain, a texture, and a way of taking paint or stain that manufactured products imitate but can't match. Bay Area Siding Company installs cedar and redwood siding in several profiles for San Pablo homeowners. We're a siding and window contractor based in Larkspur, and we work across the East Bay. Some clients want to restore the character of an older cottage near Old Town or El Portal. Others want a postwar house on the flats to look warmer than stucco or tired hardboard ever did. We'll tell you plainly what wood does well, what it asks of you, and when another material would serve you better.

Talk it through with us: call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid and we'll come look at your walls.

Who wood siding is really for

Wood is a choice you make on purpose. It isn't the default. It fits San Pablo homeowners who:

  • Want the authentic look and feel. Visible grain, crisp shadow lines, and a finish that can be changed with a new stain or paint color down the road.
  • Are matching or restoring existing wood. On many of the city's older cottages, wood can be spliced in board by board so a repair blends with what's already on the house.
  • Value repairability. A damaged wood board can usually be cut out and replaced individually. You don't have to redo a whole elevation.
  • Prefer a renewable, natural material and are comfortable maintaining it.

It's a weaker fit for someone who wants to paint once and forget about it. It's also a poor fit for a parcel where fire-hazard designation pushes the wall toward noncombustible cladding. More on that below.

Profiles and species we install

Profiles

  • Bevel or clapboard lap siding. The traditional horizontal board with a tapered face. It suits cottages and simple single-story homes, which describes much of San Pablo's housing.
  • Shingles and shakes. Cedar shingles give a textured, layered look. They're popular on gables, accent walls, or a whole house for a cottage feel.
  • Board-and-batten. Wide vertical boards with narrow battens over the joints. It gives a clean, slightly rustic, farmhouse-leaning look that can freshen a plain postwar box.

Species

  • Western red cedar is light, dimensionally stable for a wood, and naturally rich in extractives that help it resist decay. It takes both stain and paint well.
  • Redwood has deep color and natural durability, especially in heartwood grades. It's a classic material on Northern California homes.

Grade matters as much as species. Clear, vertical-grain boards cost more but tend to cup and check less than knotty or flat-sawn stock. We'll talk through which grade makes sense for the look you want and the budget you're working with.

Living with wood in San Pablo's bayside climate

San Pablo sits on the bay plain. The air is mild compared with inland valleys, but steady marine moisture and some salt come in off San Pablo Bay. For wood siding, that isn't a reason to avoid the material. It is a reason to install and maintain it carefully:

  • Seal every face. Priming or sealing the back, edges, and cut ends of each board before it goes up helps limit moisture uptake and cupping. End grain absorbs water fastest.
  • Use the right fasteners. Cedar and redwood extractives react with ordinary steel and leave dark stains. Corrosion-resistant fasteners, stainless or hot-dip galvanized, are the standard recommendation. With bayside air in the mix, they're worth the small upcharge.
  • Keep up the finish. Plan to re-stain or repaint periodically. Walls that get more sun and weather will need it sooner. Catching a failing finish early is far cheaper than replacing boards that have started to rot.
  • Keep water moving away. Good flashing at windows, doors, and the base of the wall, plus clearance from soil and hardscape, does more for wood's lifespan than anything else.

Handled this way, wood siding can last for decades. Neglected, it's the material most likely to rot, attract pests, or peel. That trade-off is the honest core of any wood decision.

A fire-zone check for eastern-edge parcels

For most of San Pablo, wildfire code won't shape your siding choice. The city is largely bay plain outside fire-hazard severity zones. However, the 2025 State Fire Marshal maps do include some very-high-hazard ground on the city's eastern edge, up toward the Sobrante ridgelines.

If your home is on that side of town, confirm your designation before you set your heart on cedar. In a designated area, California Building Code Chapter 7A governs exterior wall coverings and generally calls for noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials or tested assemblies. Some fire-retardant-treated wood products are made for this purpose, but whether a specific product qualifies depends on the product, the assembly, and the scope of work. We confirm those details with the City of San Pablo rather than assume. On those parcels, many homeowners land on fiber cement siding in a wood-grain texture instead.

Wood vs. the alternatives

It's worth comparing before you commit:

  • James Hardie fiber cement is noncombustible, rot- and pest-resistant, and holds paint well. It's the go-to for a lap or shingle look with far less upkeep. See our San Pablo James Hardie page.
  • LP SmartSide is engineered wood with a real-wood texture. It's lighter than fiber cement and needs less care than solid wood, though it still needs periodic painting.
  • Vinyl is the budget, no-paint route, with a less natural look.

How a wood re-side goes

We walk the house with you, measure, and write a scope that covers species, grade, profile, finish, and trim. Siding permits in San Pablo depend on scope. The City of San Pablo Community Development Building Division handles residential permitting, so we confirm your project's path with them and handle the paperwork.

On the job, we remove the old cladding down to the sheathing and substrate. That lets us inspect the water-resistive barrier and flashing, and deal with any damaged sheathing before anything new goes up. We then renew the WRB and flashing and install the pre-sealed boards with corrosion-resistant fasteners. Trim, finish, cleanup, and a walkthrough with you complete the job.

Replacing windows at the same time? Pairing the jobs lets us integrate the flashing at each opening. See window replacement in San Pablo.

What drives the cost

We price each job after a site visit, but the main variables are predictable:

  • Species and grade (clear vertical-grain costs more than knotty stock)
  • Profile (shingles are more labor-intensive than lap siding)
  • Wall area and the number of corners, gables, and openings
  • Factory pre-finishing vs. field finishing
  • Condition of the sheathing once the old siding is off
  • Trim detail and access
  • Whether a fire-hazard designation changes the product choice

Wood usually sits above vinyl and competes with or exceeds fiber cement once you factor in finishing. Over time, maintenance is the biggest cost difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use wood siding on my San Pablo home if it's near the eastern hills? Possibly, but check first. Most of the city is outside fire-hazard zones. Some eastern-edge parcels near the Sobrante ridgelines fall into very-high-hazard areas on the 2025 State Fire Marshal maps. There, Chapter 7A requirements for exterior walls may rule out standard wood or require a qualifying treated product. We verify your parcel with the city during scoping.

How often will wood siding need refinishing? It varies with the finish, the sun and weather each wall gets, and the product you use. Plan on a periodic re-stain or repaint cycle and regular inspections. Walls with the most exposure usually show wear first.

Can you repair my existing wood siding instead of replacing it all? Often, yes. Repairability is one of wood's strengths. If the damage is localized, we can replace individual boards and blend the finish. If rot or a failed weather barrier is widespread, a full re-side is usually the better investment.

Cedar or redwood — which is better here? Both perform well when installed and finished correctly. Cedar is lighter and very stable. Redwood offers deeper color. Grade and installation quality matter more than species, so we'll help you choose based on look, availability, and budget.
