If you want the warmth and grain of real wood without solid cedar's upkeep — and you like the idea of a cladding that's lighter and more forgiving than fiber cement — LP SmartSide belongs on your shortlist. Bay Area Siding Company installs it on homes throughout Lower Lake and the south end of Clear Lake. Here's what engineered wood is, where it shines on a rural Lake County home, and the one local caveat that matters.

SmartSide is engineered wood: real wood strands bound with resins and waxes and treated through LP's SmartGuard process, which builds in resistance to moisture, fungal decay, and termites. It comes in lap siding, vertical panels, trim, and shake-look profiles, with a deep, convincing wood texture that a lot of homeowners prefer to the crisper face of fiber cement.
What sets it apart in the hand and on the wall:
The trade-off is honest: SmartSide is a wood-based product, so it needs to stay painted and sealed on a normal repaint cycle to keep performing, and it is combustible. LP backs it with a well-regarded long limited warranty (we'll walk you through the current coverage for your products).
For rural and small-town Lower Lake homes where the owner wants texture and warmth, SmartSide is a strong middle path: more character than vinyl, easier and lighter than fiber cement, tougher than solid wood. It handles the area's long, hot, sunny summers well as an engineered product, provided the finish is maintained on the sun-beaten south and west walls.
The caveat is fire. Much of the land around Lower Lake sits in a high or very-high fire-hazard severity zone under Cal Fire's updated mapping, and the 2016 Clayton Fire burned directly into town. Because SmartSide is a combustible engineered-wood product, it may not be the right call on a parcel where California Building Code Chapter 7A requires noncombustible or tested ignition-resistant exterior materials. Whether 7A applies to your wall depends on your parcel's mapped designation and your scope of work, so we confirm that with the County of Lake and your fire district before speccing. If your address triggers those provisions, we'll steer you toward fiber cement or another compliant assembly. On parcels not subject to those requirements, SmartSide is very much on the table.
The siding replacement overview puts all of these side by side if you're still narrowing the field.
We tear off the old cladding rather than side over it — removing the existing siding to the sheathing and substrate so we can confirm the water-resistive barrier is sound and the windows and penetrations were flashed correctly, then install the SmartSide to LP's spec, including the fastening, gapping, and finish details the warranty depends on. We don't post prices; the drivers on a Lower Lake job are the size and layout of the home, the profile and finish, how much substrate repair turns up at tear-off, whether the parcel triggers fire-hazard detailing, and rural site access. SmartSide typically sits between vinyl and fiber cement on cost.
Is LP SmartSide okay for a Lower Lake fire-hazard parcel? It depends on your parcel. SmartSide is a combustible engineered-wood product, so where Chapter 7A requires noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials it may not qualify. We confirm your parcel's designation and scope with the County of Lake first; if 7A governs your wall, we'll recommend a noncombustible option instead.
Does SmartSide need to be repainted? Yes — like any wood-based siding, it needs to stay painted and sealed on a normal repaint cycle to perform, which is more upkeep than vinyl or fiber cement. In exchange you get a genuine wood texture and easy repairability.
How is SmartSide different from real cedar? It's engineered from treated wood strands rather than milled from a log, so it's far more dimensionally stable and resists rot and termites through the SmartGuard treatment — with much less variability than solid wood, at a lower cost.
Do I need a permit for SmartSide in Lower Lake? Yes. Lower Lake is unincorporated, so the permit runs through the County of Lake Community Development Department, Building Division. We take care of it.
Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid. We'll confirm what your parcel allows, walk you through the SmartSide profiles and finishes, and give you a real number after we measure. Replacing windows too?
