Wood siding suits the Calaveras foothills in a way few materials do. A cedar-shingled ranch house under the oaks, or a redwood board-and-batten home on acreage off Highway 26, looks like it belongs to the land around it. It is also the most demanding cladding you can put on a house here. Two local realities decide whether wood is the right call for your Valley Springs property: long, hot summers that are hard on any finish, and the fire hazard designations that cover much of Calaveras County.
Bay Area Siding Company is a siding and window contractor based in Larkspur, Marin County. We work in Calaveras County and the Sierra foothills, and we install natural wood siding, including cedar and redwood clapboard, shingles and shakes, and board-and-batten. We will tell you plainly when wood fits your home and parcel and when another material would serve you better.

Nothing else looks, smells, or ages quite like wood. That is the main reason people pick it, and it is a legitimate reason. Other reasons to choose wood:
On a subdivision home in Rancho Calaveras or La Contenta, wood is less common than low-maintenance options. It still comes up when an owner wants a warmer, custom look. On older homes and ranchettes, it is often a question of keeping the look the house was built with.
Valley Springs summers bring stretches of triple-digit afternoons, and the south and west walls take the worst of the sun. UV breaks down stains and paints, and dry heat pulls moisture out of the wood. That drying leads to checking along the grain and to joints that open up over time.
None of this rules wood out. It does mean you should plan for regular refinishing, with the sun-facing walls usually needing attention first. You should also expect to inspect and reseal joints and trim before the winter rains arrive. If your plan is to install siding and not think about it for fifteen years, wood is the wrong material, and we'll say so.
This is fire country. The county went through the 2015 Butte Fire, much of Calaveras County is State Responsibility Area with mapped fire hazard severity zones, and Cal Fire updated those maps in 2025.
Where a parcel carries a designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can regulate the exterior wall covering. It steers the assemblies it covers toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, or toward approved alternatives, which can include certain labeled fire-retardant-treated wood products or tested assemblies.
How this plays out depends on three things:
It is not a blanket rule for every home or every wall. Because Valley Springs is unincorporated, the authority that confirms these requirements is the Calaveras County Building Division. We check your parcel early, before you fall in love with a profile you can't use.
Where fire exposure is a serious concern, we often recommend a hybrid approach. Examples include fiber cement on the main walls with wood accents where the rules allow, or a wood-look product built for the conditions. Compare fiber cement, our Valley Springs James Hardie page, and LP SmartSide engineered wood if you want the wood look with different fire, upkeep, or budget characteristics.
Paint versus stain matters in this sun. Solid-color stains and quality exterior paints protect the surface differently than semi-transparent stains, which show more grain but need recoating more often. We'll go through the options with you and recommend a finish plan along with the siding itself.
The job starts on site. We look at the house, confirm the parcel's fire designation with the County, and settle on species, profile, and finish.
When we remove the old cladding, we take it down to the sheathing or substrate. That exposes the water-resistive barrier and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations so we can inspect them and repair or replace what's needed. Framing stays covered unless damaged sheathing has to come off too.
Wood needs a sound, well-detailed wall behind it. Before the new siding goes on, we:
We pull the permit through the Calaveras County Building Division, which has offices in the county seat of San Andreas, and we handle the paperwork as part of the job.

We don't post prices, because wood pricing varies more than most cladding. The main factors are:
Remember to budget for the refinishing cycle over time as well, not just the install.
Can I put wood siding on my house in Valley Springs if it's in a fire hazard zone? Sometimes. Where a parcel carries a designation, Chapter 7A can limit exterior wall coverings to noncombustible, ignition-resistant, or other approved materials and assemblies. Some labeled fire-retardant-treated wood products may qualify, depending on the product and the scope. We confirm your parcel's requirements with the Calaveras County Building Division before recommending anything.
How often will wood siding need refinishing out here? It depends on the species, the finish type, and exposure. Sun-facing south and west walls in a Valley Springs summer usually need attention sooner than shaded ones. We'll recommend a finish system and a realistic inspection schedule for your home.
Is cedar or redwood better for a foothill home? Both are naturally durable and well suited to California homes. Cedar is the usual choice for shingles and takes stain beautifully. Redwood offers rich color and a traditional California look. Availability, grade, and budget often decide it.
Do I need a permit for wood siding in Valley Springs? Re-siding in unincorporated Valley Springs is permitted through the Calaveras County Building Division. We handle the permit as part of the job.
