A lot of St. Helena homeowners want their house to look like wood. That includes the early-20th-century farmhouses, the board-and-batten and lap-sided places out among the vineyards, and the cottages on the older streets near downtown. What they don't want is the scraping, patching, and rot-chasing that comes with aging solid wood. LP SmartSide is one of the main ways to get that look with less upkeep. Bay Area Siding Company installs LP SmartSide throughout St. Helena and the Napa Valley. We're a Marin-based siding and window contractor. We'll tell you plainly where this product fits your house and where another material would serve you better.

SmartSide is engineered wood. It is made from wood strands that are treated through LP's SmartGuard process, bonded with resins, and pressed into boards and panels with an embossed wood-grain surface. The treatment is designed to help it resist moisture, fungal decay, and termites.
It is not solid wood, and it is not fiber cement. It sits between the two:
LP backs SmartSide with a long limited warranty, tied to installation per its instructions. We follow LP's install requirements closely because that is what keeps the coverage valid. We'll walk you through the current warranty terms for the specific products you choose rather than quote a number from memory.
St. Helena's homes range widely:
SmartSide works best on the rural and farmhouse end of that range. A board-and-batten panel system painted a deep color or a classic white is a natural match for the modern-farmhouse look common in the valley. Crisp lap siding with SmartSide trim suits a straightforward traditional home.
On a genuinely historic elevation near downtown, the question is more delicate. Engineered wood can approximate traditional lap proportions, but where a house's original detailing matters, real wood siding may be the more faithful answer. Some projects near the historic district may also carry design considerations beyond the building permit. We confirm what applies to your address before we specify anything.
If there's one thing to sort out before falling for SmartSide's texture, it's your parcel's fire-hazard status.
Wildfire is a real factor in this part of the valley. The 2020 Glass Fire burned into the St. Helena area. Cal Fire's 2025 Local Responsibility Area maps also designated additional upvalley ground as elevated fire hazard, including sections between St. Helena and Calistoga.
Engineered wood is a wood-based, combustible product. On a parcel with a fire-hazard designation, the state's wildland-urban interface provisions (California Building Code Chapter 7A) apply to exterior wall coverings and related assemblies. Whether a given siding product or wall assembly is acceptable depends on:
We don't make a blanket promise either way. We check your parcel's designation and confirm with the City of St. Helena Building Division before we recommend a material.
If the answer points toward noncombustible cladding, we'll say so. Fiber cement and James Hardie are the usual alternatives. The St. Helena James Hardie page covers that decision in detail. For many in-town and valley-floor parcels, SmartSide remains a reasonable option. For others, especially hillside homes near designated zones, it may not be the right call.
We'd rather you choose SmartSide knowing its limits than be surprised later.

A SmartSide job with us is a real re-side, not an overlay. First we remove the old cladding. That exposes the sheathing or substrate and the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing, not the studs. We probe for concealed rot, repair or replace damaged substrate, and install a proper WRB. Many older walls in town never had a proper weather barrier.
Next, we re-flash windows, doors, and transitions. Then we install SmartSide to LP's specifications: correct fastening, required gaps, sealed cut edges, and clearance at grade and rooflines. Trim, finish, and a walkthrough close it out.
Framing is only involved if the sheathing itself has failed and needs to come off. That is a larger scope we would show you and price separately.
The work is permitted and inspected through the City of St. Helena Building Division, within the Community Development Department. We handle the permit. If you're also replacing windows, doing them during the re-side lets us flash both together. See window replacement in St. Helena and our broader St. Helena siding replacement page.
We don't post prices, because SmartSide projects vary with the house. The main factors are:
A site visit gets you an accurate bid. You can also browse our projects for a sense of finished work.
Can I use LP SmartSide if my St. Helena property is in a fire-hazard zone? It depends on the parcel and the scope. SmartSide is a combustible, wood-based product, and Chapter 7A governs exterior wall coverings on designated parcels. We check your designation and confirm acceptable materials and assemblies with the City of St. Helena Building Division. If noncombustible cladding is the better path, we'll recommend fiber cement.
Will SmartSide give me a real board-and-batten farmhouse look? Yes. That's one of its strengths. LP's vertical panels with SmartSide trim battens create the look, and once painted the wood-grain texture reads well from the street.
How does SmartSide hold up to the valley sun? The painted finish takes most of the sun exposure, so paint quality and upkeep matter most on the south and west walls. Properly installed and maintained, the board beneath is protected by that finish.
Is SmartSide appropriate near the downtown historic district? Sometimes. It depends on the house and any design considerations tied to the address. For a significant period elevation, real wood may suit the house better. We confirm the requirements before specifying.
